Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora jacobsoni was described by Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1916 from specimens collected in central Sumatra. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Rasbora jacobsoni Weber & de Beaufort, 1916, with no senior synonyms.
The genus Rasbora has been substantially pruned over the past few decades as molecular and morphological work revealed it to be polyphyletic. Several genera were carved out of the old Rasbora aggregate, including Boraras (dwarf rasboras), Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides. Rasbora jacobsoni has remained within the core Rasbora assemblage through these revisions. The species epithet jacobsoni honours a collector or naturalist active in the Dutch East Indies, following the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century convention of naming new Sumatran fishes after the scientists and explorers who facilitated collection.
Morphology
Rasbora jacobsoni is a small, elongate and laterally compressed cyprinid, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. Like most members of the genus, it has a fusiform body, a slightly pointed snout, a terminal to slightly upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the surface, and a forked caudal fin.
Coloration details from the original description and regional surveys place it in the general pattern typical of mid-sized Sumatran rasboras: a pale, silvery to yellowish body that may carry a lateral stripe or iridescent sheen, a relatively plain dorsal region, and clear to faintly tinted fins. Detailed published colour notes for living specimens of this particular species are sparse in the accessible literature; observers in the field may encounter superficial similarity to other Sumatran Rasbora species in the same drainages.
Habitat
This species is endemic to central Sumatra, Indonesia, where it is found in freshwater rivers and streams characterised by rocky and sandy substrates. FishBase and IUCN records confirm it occupies tropical lowland drainages, consistent with Sumatra's mix of hill-stream tributaries and broader river systems across the island's interior.
Sumatra's freshwaters span a wide range of conditions, from clear, moderately fast highland tributaries to slower lowland rivers, some seasonally influenced by rainfall patterns. General Rasbora ecology in the region indicates a preference for warm, soft to moderately hard water, often shaded by riparian or forest canopy. The IUCN assessment notes a broad distribution across central Sumatra, suggesting the species is not restricted to a single drainage or highly specialised microhabitat, which underpins its stable conservation standing.
Feeding
Like the overwhelming majority of Rasbora species, Rasbora jacobsoni is an omnivore and opportunistic micropredator. Its diet in the wild almost certainly includes small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insects and their larvae, small crustaceans and worms — taken from the water column and surface, supplemented with algae, organic detritus and fine plant material, as documented for closely related Sumatran rasboras.
The species' body plan, with its slightly upturned mouth and slim, fast-swimming profile, suits a fish that feeds actively through the water column and at the surface. In the aquarium, as for other rasboras, it accepts high-quality dried foods, live and frozen small invertebrates such as daphnia and brine shrimp, and finely ground prepared diets.
Mating
Rasbora jacobsoni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific courtship observations for this species have been published in the accessible literature, but it follows the pattern universal across the genus Rasbora: a gravid female is pursued closely by one or more males through open water or vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing drives among plants or over the substrate.
There is no pair bond, no territory, and no parental care of any kind. Eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, root masses or the substrate and are left entirely to their own fate. Adults will readily consume their own eggs given the opportunity, so in captive breeding situations the adults are separated from the spawn as soon as spawning is complete.
Breeding
No dedicated breeding account for Rasbora jacobsoni has been published in widely available aquarium literature. By analogy with other mid-sized Sumatran rasboras of similar build and ecology, the species is presumed to follow the standard egg-scattering protocol: soft, slightly acidic warm water triggers spawning, females release a clutch of small, weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or a mossy substrate, and neither parent guards the eggs or fry.
Hobbyists attempting to breed related species typically condition adults on live and frozen foods, set up a shallow spawning tank with java moss or equivalent, and raise water temperature slightly. Eggs are expected to hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming shortly thereafter and initially accepting infusoria or powdered first foods before moving to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Rasbora jacobsoni is not a commonly traded species and is unlikely to be found in mainstream aquarium retail. It is the kind of fish that occasionally appears in specialist shipments of wild-caught Sumatran stock or through hobbyist networks focused on less-common Southeast Asian cyprinids. When available, it should be maintained in the manner of other mid-sized Sumatran rasboras: a well-filtered aquarium with warm, soft to moderately soft water (72–82 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5), gentle current, and a dark substrate with some plant cover or driftwood to replicate the shaded Sumatran stream environment.
As a shoaling species, it should be kept in groups of at least six individuals to express natural behaviour and remain settled. Its diet is undemanding — quality flake, micro-pellets, and regular live or frozen invertebrate foods suit it well. It is likely compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized Southeast Asian fish in a community setting.
Conservation
Rasbora jacobsoni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed on 25 January 2019. The IUCN notes a stable population and a broad distribution across central Sumatra, with no evidence of major population decline that would warrant a more threatened category.
Sumatra as a whole faces severe and ongoing environmental pressures: large-scale conversion of lowland forest and peatland to oil palm and pulp plantations, infrastructure expansion, mining, and widespread water quality degradation have substantially altered freshwater habitats across the island. The species' relatively broad range in central Sumatra provides some resilience, but future assessments will need to evaluate whether the cumulative transformation of Sumatran river basins is causing population-level impacts. For now, occurrence records confirmed by iNaturalist and FishBase support the current distribution, and the species is not considered at immediate risk.
