Rasbora reticulata, the reticulate rasbora, is a small, slender cyprinid described by Weber and de Beaufort in 1915 from Nias Island — a modest island off the northwestern coast of Sumatra — and considered largely endemic to that locality. Rarely more than 2.5 in in total length, it inhabits the soft, tannin-rich forest streams and peat-swamp fringes typical of Sundaland, where subdued light filters through a canopy of overhanging vegetation and the water runs amber with dissolved organics. It remains a niche species in the hobby, valued by collectors of small Asian cyprinids but little known outside specialist circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora reticulata was described by Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1915 from material collected on Nias Island, off the northwestern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Rasbora reticulata Weber & de Beaufort, 1915.

The genus Rasbora has undergone considerable revision since the early twentieth century. A series of genera have been carved out of the old broad Rasbora: Boraras (dwarf species), Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, and Rasboroides were removed, while the harlequin-type species formerly known as Rasbora heteromorpha moved into Trigonostigma (Kottelat & Witte, 1999). The species treated here has not been subject to such a transfer and remains in Rasbora under current authority. Its specific epithet reticulata (Latin: "netted" or "reticulated") refers to the scale-edge markings that give the flanks a faint net-like pattern.

Morphology

Rasbora reticulata is a slim, laterally compressed rasbora reaching a maximum recorded total length of around 2.5 in, with most individuals in the aquarium remaining closer to 2 in. The body is elongate and typical of the genus: a small, subterminal mouth, large eyes, and a forked caudal fin. Colouration is silver to pale gold along the flanks, with each scale edged in a slightly darker pigment that creates the reticulate or net-like pattern from which the species takes its name.

Sexual dimorphism is modest: females become noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid, while males tend to be slightly slimmer overall. No detailed meristic data from primary literature were available in the sources consulted; the account above follows FishBase and aquarium observations.

Habitat

The reticulate rasbora is native to Nias Island and parts of Sumatra in Indonesia, where FishBase records it from freshwater environments of a benthopelagic habit in tropical conditions. The species is associated with forest streams and peat-swamp-margin habitats characteristic of Sundaland: shallow, slow-flowing to near-still water that is heavily stained with tannins and humic acids from decaying leaf litter and peat, resulting in very soft, acidic conditions.

Aquarium sources report it from plant-rich waters with subdued light and gentle flow, where fine-leaved vegetation provides cover. Water temperatures in its native range run from approximately 22 to 79–81 °F. The soft, acidic signature (pH 6.0–6.8; hardness 2–10 °dH) aligns with Sundaland blackwater habitats generally. Nias Island is geologically and biogeographically somewhat isolated from mainland Sumatra, contributing to the species' relatively narrow known distribution.

Feeding

Rasbora reticulata is an omnivore. In natural Sundaland forest-stream habitats, small rasboras of this type feed opportunistically on tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton — supplemented with filamentous algae and organic detritus drifting through the water column.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods. Good-quality micro-granules or small flakes form a practical staple; condition and colouration improve with regular offerings of live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Its small mouth and modest size mean food particle size should be kept appropriately small.

Mating

Like all Rasbora, R. reticulata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the moment of spawning. In nature, spawning is likely linked to seasonal cues — water-level changes and temperature shifts associated with rainfall patterns in Sumatra's equatorial climate. A gravid female is pursued closely by a driving male through fine-leaved vegetation; the pair press briefly together and release eggs and milt simultaneously.

The scattered eggs are adhesive and cling to plant leaves, moss, and fine substrate. Adults show no recognition of their own eggs and will consume them given the opportunity, so eggs and adults should be separated promptly in breeding situations.

Breeding

Breeding Rasbora reticulata follows the standard soft-water egg-scatterer protocol used for many small Sundaland rasboras. A small, shallow spawning tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants (java moss, hornwort) or a mesh above the base provides refuges for the eggs after they sink or settle. Water should be very soft and slightly acidic — pH 6.0–6.5 and hardness below 5 °dH — with a temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius. A conditioned pair or trio is introduced, and spawning usually occurs in the morning.

Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures. Fry are tiny and initially require infusoria or commercial fry foods of the finest grade; newly hatched brine shrimp can be offered once the fry are large enough to accept them. Adults must be removed after spawning as they will eat eggs and fry.

In the aquarium

The reticulate rasbora is a peaceful, shoaling species best kept in groups of six or more. In smaller numbers it tends to be shy and may hide, while a larger group displays more confident, open-water behaviour. It suits a planted community aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and gentle filtration — conditions that replicate the Sundaland forest streams it calls home.

Aquarium sources recommend pH 6.0–7.0 (ideally 6.0–6.8), hardness of 2–10 °dH, and temperatures of 72–81 °F. Tannin-stained water with subdued lighting suits the species well and brings out its colouration; dark substrate and floating plants to diffuse overhead light help. Suitable tankmates include other small, peaceful soft-water species such as small Boraras, Trigonostigma, or Corydoras of appropriate temperature range. It remains uncommon in the trade and may require a specialist supplier.

Conservation

Rasbora reticulata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of 9 January 2019. The evaluation reflects a population considered stable enough at the time of assessment to fall below threatened thresholds, though the species' restricted distribution — centred on Nias Island and parts of Sumatra — means it has a naturally limited range.

The principal threats to forest-stream and peat-swamp species across Sundaland are severe: large-scale conversion of lowland forests to oil palm and timber plantations, drainage of peat swamps, and associated water-quality degradation have reduced and fragmented habitat across Sumatra substantially over recent decades. Nias Island itself has experienced deforestation pressure. While the 2019 LC assessment indicates no documented population collapse, the long-term outlook for narrow-range Sundaland stream species is linked closely to the trajectory of land use on these islands.
