Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora leptosoma was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1855, with the type locality given as Lahat, Sumatra, Indonesia; the lectotype is held at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH 4981). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Rasbora leptosoma (Bleeker, 1855), with the parenthetical authority marking the original description in a genus later synonymised or reallocated.
The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial taxonomic revision since the late twentieth century. A series of genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — were carved out of the old, broadly conceived Rasbora by Kottelat and others, and Trigonostigma (the harlequin-type rasboras) was erected by Kottelat & Witte (1999). The copperstripe rasbora remains in core Rasbora under current Catalog of Fishes treatment. The common name 'copperstripe rasbora' is in widespread use in the aquarium trade and is consistent with the fish's defining lateral marking.
Morphology
Rasbora leptosoma is a slender, elongate cyprinid that lives up to both parts of its name. The body is notably thin in cross-section for a rasbora, deepening only slightly at the dorsal profile, and it is laterally compressed throughout. Published maximum size figures vary somewhat in the literature — FishBase gives a figure approaching 3 in total length, though aquarium specimens are more typically in the 1.5–2 in range.
The most striking feature is the lateral stripe: a clear, coppery to brassy horizontal band running from the rear of the operculum to the caudal peduncle, catching the light with a metallic shimmer as the fish turns. The dorsum is olive to tan and the belly is silvery white. Finnage is mostly hyaline. As in most rasboras, females are slightly deeper-bellied than males when in breeding condition, though the dimorphism is modest.
Habitat
Rasbora leptosoma is native to Sumatra, Indonesia. Its type locality, Lahat, lies in the South Sumatra province in the drainage of the Musi River system. The species inhabits freshwater streams and small rivers in the lowland and foothill zones of the island, likely in environments influenced by the dense peat-swamp and forest-stream systems that historically dominated Sumatra's interior lowlands.
As with many Sumatran stream fish, the natural waters are soft and acidic — the typical blackwater chemistry generated by abundant leaf litter, decomposing organic matter and laterite soils produces water low in dissolved minerals and with a pH well below neutral. The cache records a preference for soft, acidic, tannin-stained water, with a temperature range of approximately 73–82 °F (73–82°F) and a pH spanning roughly 6.0–7.8, though the tighter, more acidic end of that range better reflects the fish's wild habitat.
Feeding
Rasbora leptosoma is an omnivorous micropredator in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates typical of lowland Sumatran streams: aquatic insect larvae, small worms, microcrustaceans, and fine organic particles. Its relatively terminal to slightly upturned mouth positions it as a mid-water and surface-zone feeder, intercepting drifting invertebrates and surface-fallen prey items.
In aquarium care the species is straightforward to feed and accepts good-quality small flake and micro-pellet foods readily. Live and frozen foods — daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, micro-worms — are eagerly taken and promote the best colour and condition. The small gape means that food particle size matters; finely crushed flake or purpose-made nano foods suit the fish well.
Mating
Rasbora leptosoma is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond, nest construction, or post-spawning parental investment is known in this species. Courtship follows the typical rasbora pattern: a ready male pursues a gravid female closely through vegetation or open water, pressing against her flanks and driving her through fine-leaved plants or over the substrate while eggs and milt are released together.
The adhesive eggs settle among plant leaves, moss or substrate particles after release. The adults ignore the eggs entirely once shed and will readily eat them given the opportunity. In a densely planted aquarium, a proportion of eggs survive by falling into shelter the parents cannot easily reach.
Breeding
Breeding Rasbora leptosoma in captivity follows the standard approach for small soft-water rasboras. A separate, shallow spawning tank with very soft, acidic, tannin-tinted water — pH around 6.0–6.5, temperature 77–81 °F — and a generous mat of fine-leaved plants or Java moss provides eggs with cover and helps trigger spawning behaviour. A well-conditioned pair or a small group introduced to the prepared tank typically spawns within a day or two.
The spawning act is brief: the pair press together among the plants as adhesive eggs are scattered and fall into the vegetation below. Adults are removed promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation. The eggs hatch in roughly two to three days; the tiny larvae are free-swimming a few days later and take infusoria or commercial fry foods initially, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Water quality must be kept pristine throughout the fry stage.
In the aquarium
Rasbora leptosoma is an active, shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six — ten or more is better. In a group of adequate size it moves confidently and displays its coppery stripe to best advantage; in smaller numbers it is timid and tends to hide. It suits a well-planted aquarium with some open swimming space, subdued lighting, and the addition of dried leaf litter or driftwood to produce the tannin-stained soft-acid water it prefers.
Compatible tankmates are small, peaceful species from similar soft-water habitats — other small rasboras, small tetras, dwarf corydoras, and similarly calm bottom-dwellers. Its soft, acidic water requirements mean it should not be mixed with hard-water species. Pristine water quality and stable parameters are more important than in hardier rasboras; the species is moderately sensitive to elevated nitrates and inconsistent maintenance. A well-maintained nano or planted community tank with the right water chemistry suits it well.
Conservation
Rasbora leptosoma is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). This status reflects the ongoing and severe loss of its freshwater habitat in Sumatra — one of the world's most heavily deforested islands. Lowland Sumatran forest and the peat-swamp and forest stream habitats that support species like R. leptosoma have been cleared at a very high rate for oil palm and pulpwood plantations, agriculture, and settlement over recent decades, with the associated changes in hydrology, sedimentation and water chemistry degrading stream quality broadly.
The species' apparently limited distribution in the Sumatran lowlands makes it vulnerable to the cumulative loss of suitable habitat. Conservation of this and many other narrowly distributed Sumatran stream fishes depends ultimately on the retention of forested catchments — a challenge that intersects with land-use policy across the island rather than with aquarium collecting, which is not regarded as a primary pressure on the species.
