Rasbora vulgaris, the blacktip rasbora, is a small, slender cyprinid of the freshwater streams, ponds and densely vegetated waterways of Southeast Asia, first described by Duncker in 1904 from a type locality at Kuala Lumpur on the Malay Peninsula. Growing to just under 3 in standard length, it is an active shoaling fish of soft, tropical lowland waters, and one of the more modest members of the large and taxonomically complex genus Rasbora. Its distribution spans the southern reach of mainland Southeast Asia, where it occupies slow-moving and still habitats often rich in aquatic vegetation.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora vulgaris was described by Georg Duncker in 1904, with the type locality recorded as Kuala Lumpur, in what is now peninsular Malaysia. The specific epithet vulgaris is Latin for 'common' or 'ordinary', reflecting the species' unremarkable appearance among the many rasboras of the region. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Rasbora vulgaris Duncker, 1904, with no subsequent generic reassignment documented in the primary literature.

Rasbora belongs to the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Danioninae — the same subfamily that encompasses the true danios and their allies. The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial revision since the 1990s: Kottelat and others carved out several segregate genera including Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Trigonostigma and Rasboroides from what was formerly a broad, heterogeneous Rasbora. Rasbora vulgaris has not been implicated in any of these splits and remains unambiguously placed in Rasbora sensu stricto. It is not known to be a misidentified danio or closely allied to the more divergent lineages now separated into their own genera.

Morphology

Rasbora vulgaris is a small, fusiform, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum of approximately 3 in standard length, though most aquarium specimens are considerably smaller. The body is slender and elongated, typical of the active mid-water rasboras, with a relatively pointed snout and a terminal to slightly upturned mouth.

Colouration is subdued: the flanks are silvery with a faint golden or olive wash, and a narrow dark lateral stripe or marking runs toward the caudal region, where a small blackish tip on the caudal fin or its base gives the species its common name, blacktip rasbora. The fins are otherwise largely hyaline. This combination of a plain silvery body with a defined black caudal marking is characteristic of the species and distinguishes it from the more boldly marked rasboras of the region.

Habitat

Rasbora vulgaris is a Southeast Asian lowland species, native to streams, rivers and ponds of the Malay Peninsula and adjacent parts of insular and mainland Southeast Asia. It favours slow-moving or still freshwater habitats, often in areas with dense aquatic vegetation or overhanging riparian cover.

Its preferred water conditions are soft and mildly acidic, consistent with the lowland peat-influenced drainages and secondary streams of the Sundaland region, where water chemistry is shaped by organic matter and the leaching of tannins. FishBase records a pH preference of 6.0–7.0 and optimal temperatures in the tropical range of 72–82 °F. The species is described as benthopelagic and associated with well-vegetated, low-gradient watercourses rather than fast-flowing hill streams.

Feeding

Rasbora vulgaris is an omnivore in the manner of most small, mid-water rasboras. In its natural habitat it feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and similar zooplankton — alongside plant material and organic detritus taken from the water column and the substrate surface.

In the aquarium it accepts a broad diet without difficulty. Small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm and brine shrimp are taken eagerly, and good-quality flake or micro-pellet foods provide a practical staple. Feeding a variety of food types maintains condition and colouration. The species is an active, fast-moving feeder and will compete readily at feeding time.

Mating

Rasbora vulgaris is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical danionine manner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. Reproductively active fish scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, moss or over the substrate, after which the adults take no further interest in their offspring.

Courtship involves a male closely pursuing a gravid female through vegetation; the pair momentarily press together and simultaneously release eggs and milt. The adhesive eggs settle among plants or substrate where, if not discovered and consumed by the adult fish, they develop independently. Spawning frequency is tied to temperature and food availability, increasing in warmer months when conditions improve.

Breeding

Breeding Rasbora vulgaris follows the same approach used for the majority of small, egg-scattering rasboras. A separate, shallow breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with water in the soft and slightly acidic range (pH 6.0–6.8, temperature 75–81 °F), provides suitable conditions. A well-conditioned group or a chosen pair is introduced in the evening, and spawning often takes place early the following morning.

Because the adults will eat their own eggs, the spawning group should be removed promptly after spawning is observed. The adhesive eggs hatch in approximately 24–48 hours depending on temperature, and the larvae become free-swimming within a few days, at which point they require infusoria or liquid fry food as a first food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Growth is moderately rapid and the fry are undemanding once free-swimming.

In the aquarium

Rasbora vulgaris is an active, peaceable shoaling fish that does best in groups of six or more. In smaller numbers it tends to be nervous and less likely to display its natural behaviour; a well-sized group produces the characteristic coordinated schooling movement of the rasboras. It makes an undemanding community fish compatible with other small, non-aggressive species that share its water-chemistry preferences.

A planted aquarium with subdued lighting, some open swimming space, and soft, warm, slightly acidic water suits the species well. Water temperatures of 72–82 °F with a pH around 6.0–7.0 and low to moderate hardness match the conditions of its Sundaland homeland. Frequent small water changes to maintain low dissolved waste are beneficial. The species is not demanding in terms of diet, space requirements or equipment, and its modest size and peaceful temperament make it a practical choice for Southeast Asian biotope setups as well as general community tanks.

Conservation

Rasbora vulgaris is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its broad distribution across Southeast Asia and an absence of evidence of severe range-wide decline. Its occurrence across multiple river systems and habitat types reduces its vulnerability to localised disturbance, and it is not subject to significant targeted collection pressure for the ornamental trade.

Nonetheless, the lowland wetland habitats of peninsular Malaysia and the broader Sundaland region face substantial pressure from forest clearance, peat-swamp drainage for agriculture, urban expansion and water-quality degradation. Many rasbora species dependent on intact, tannin-stained peat-swamp drainage are in sharp decline, and while Rasbora vulgaris is currently considered secure, the continued loss of vegetated lowland stream habitats across its range represents a background threat that warrants monitoring.
