Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus strigiventus was described by Zhou and Yang in 2011 from specimens collected in the Nabang-He, a branch of the Nmai Kha River that drains into the Irrawaddy system in the border region of northern Myanmar and Yunnan, China. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes — the swamp-eel alliance. This means it is not a true eel in any zoological sense; true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes and are only remotely related. The spiny eels evolved their elongate, burrowing form independently, making M. strigiventus an eel by trade name and body plan but not by phylogeny.
A note of caution attaches to this species: Maurice Kottelat, in his 2013 revision of the fishes of inland waters of Southeast Asia, treated M. strigiventus as a junior synonym of Mastacembelus tinwini Britz, 2007, a species described from the Salween basin of Myanmar. The two were separated by drainage basin, but Kottelat considered their characters to overlap. FishBase and EOL continue to list M. strigiventus as a recognisable name under the Zhou and Yang authorship, and the question of its status is not fully settled. The two river systems — Irrawaddy and Salween — are geographically close in northern Myanmar, and the fish is physically similar enough that future molecular work will be needed to resolve the boundary.
The genus Mastacembelus spans Africa and tropical Asia. African members were long divided into segregate genera (Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus) that have since been absorbed back into Mastacembelus. The Asian species, including M. strigiventus, have always sat in the core Mastacembelus and are not part of that African taxonomic history.
Morphology
Mastacembelus strigiventus reaches a maximum recorded length of 11.5 in total length, making it a distinctly smaller species than the more familiar trade spiny eels such as the fire eel (M. erythrotaenia) or the tire-track eel (M. favus). The body is greatly elongate, laterally compressed toward the tail, and essentially scaleless in appearance — the minute embedded scales are invisible to the naked eye and the animal is covered in a heavy mucus coat instead, a typical mastacembelid character. The fleshy, pointed snout is drawn out into the probing, trunk-like rostrum that defines the family, equipped with tubular nostrils for sensing food in the substrate.
The dorsal fin count is diagnostic: 36–37 total dorsal spines, followed by 64–67 soft dorsal rays, with 3 anal spines and 63–66 anal soft rays. The isolated short spines along the back ahead of the soft dorsal give the family its common name. The colouration is dark brown overall, with a characteristic zigzag network of longitudinal lines running from roughly the anal-fin origin to the base of the caudal fin — a bold, reticulate pattern that distinguishes it from the more uniformly patterned relatives. The belly (ventral surface) carries a striped pattern from which the species name is drawn, and the fins are not brightly coloured in the manner of the fire eel.
Habitat
In the wild, M. strigiventus is known from the Nabang-He, a stream flowing from Yunnan Province in China into the Nmai Kha River, the main eastern tributary of the Irrawaddy. This is a warm, lowland to foothill freshwater environment in a region of seasonal monsoon rainfall. The Irrawaddy basin at these latitudes supports slow to moderate streams and rivers with mixed sand, gravel and leaf-litter substrate, typically running through forested hills and valley floors.
Like other Asian Mastacembelus of comparable drainage basins, this species is expected to inhabit soft-to-neutral freshwater with temperatures in the 75–82 °F range and pH broadly between 6.5 and 7.8. It is a demersal, benthic fish — a bottom-dweller that burrows into soft substrate and shelters among submerged roots and leaf litter by day. It is found only in fresh water with no tolerance for salinity. The monsoon seasonal cycle, with its pulse of rising, warming water, is a likely driver of its breeding activity, as is documented for closely related species in the same drainage.
Feeding
Mastacembelus strigiventus, like all mastacembelid spiny eels, is a nocturnal, benthic carnivore. The elongate, probing snout is adapted for rooting through soft substrate and leaf litter in search of benthic invertebrates: insect larvae, small worms, and other small soft-bodied animals that live in or on the river bed. The down-turned, subterminal mouth is typical of a substrate forager rather than an open-water predator.
In the aquarium, small Mastacembelus like M. strigiventus can be fed bloodworm (frozen or live), small earthworm pieces, and similar meaty invertebrate foods offered after the lights go out. Being shy and nocturnal, newly acquired specimens often refuse to feed in daylight or while observed. Evening or late-night feeding over a dark, sheltered area of the tank greatly increases the rate at which fish begin feeding confidently.
Mating
Mastacembelus strigiventus belongs to the spiny-eel family and follows the mastacembelid reproductive pattern: it is a substrate egg-scatterer that breeds in fresh water and gives no parental care. This distinguishes it clearly from the catadromous true eels (Anguilla), which migrate to the sea to spawn and never return, and from the swamp eels (Monopterus), in which the male builds and guards a bubble-nest. No such structure exists in M. strigiventus or any other mastacembelid.
Mating in related Mastacembelus species is triggered by seasonal changes — rising water temperature, increasing water level associated with the monsoon flood pulse, and shifts in photoperiod. Gravid females become noticeably pot-bellied as the season advances. Courtship involves the pair circling and entwining near vegetation or other fine structure, and spawning occurs when the pair scatters adhesive eggs among plants or root tangles. No specific wild mating observations for M. strigiventus are on record, given how recently the species was described and how poorly its natural environment has been studied.
Breeding
The spiny-eel breeding pattern for M. strigiventus follows the family norm: a scatter of adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or leaf litter in fresh water, with no guarding of the eggs or care of the larvae. The eggs are adhesive and semi-transparent, and in documented spawnings of comparable Mastacembelus species hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. The larvae are very small and require minute first foods before they can accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
Based on the documented breeding biology of M. armatus and other Irrawaddy-basin relatives, spawning in the wild likely concentrates in two seasonal peaks linked to monsoon water changes — typically late dry-season warming and the onset of rains, and again mid-season as waters peak. Captive breeding of small Mastacembelus is uncommon but more achievable than for the very large species: partial water changes with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate seasonal onset can help condition a pair. As with all mastacembelids, a tight-lidded breeding vessel with ample hiding structure and excellent water quality is essential. M. strigiventus is rarely if ever available in the trade, so captive breeding records are essentially absent.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus strigiventus is virtually unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not an animal a keeper is likely to encounter except through specialist importers dealing in unusual Asian oddities. Its modest adult size — under 12 in — means it does not require the enormous tanks demanded by the fire eel or the tire-track eel, and a tank of around 39.5 in length with a deep, fine-sand substrate would suit a single specimen. The same essential requirements apply as for all spiny eels: a tight, fully sealed lid is non-negotiable, since mastacembelids are expert escape artists that will force through any small gap and die on the floor.
Like all members of the family, M. strigiventus is scaleless and accordingly sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water conditions. It should be kept only in a mature, biologically stable system. The tank should be furnished with caves, sections of pipe, and leaf-litter piles that allow the fish to bury itself and retreat from view by day; it is nocturnal and will spend most of the daylight hours invisible under the substrate or inside a hide. It should not be kept with fishes small enough to eat, but is otherwise peaceful and compatible with robust tankmates of appropriate size. Its rarity means most keepers will meet it only in the literature — should it become available, however, it is a manageable and biologically interesting oddity from a poorly-known corner of the Irrawaddy drainage.
Conservation
Mastacembelus strigiventus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — its status is Not Evaluated (NE). This is unsurprising given that it was described only in 2011 and its taxonomic status remains disputed: Kottelat (2013) treated it as a synonym of M. tinwini from the adjacent Salween basin, which itself has not received a formal threat assessment. The absence of an IUCN assessment should not be mistaken for an assurance of security.
The species is known from a single small tributary of the upper Irrawaddy in a geographically restricted border region between Myanmar and Yunnan. Narrow-range endemics in this part of mainland Southeast Asia face real pressures: land conversion, small-scale mining, damming of highland streams, and collection for the ornamental trade can each have disproportionate impact on a species with a limited range. The headwater streams of the upper Irrawaddy drainage in Kachin State and bordering Yunnan are relatively data-poor, and the conservation status of their fish communities is largely unknown. Until a formal assessment is completed and the taxonomy of M. strigiventus/M. tinwini is resolved, this species occupies the precautionary grey zone occupied by many recently described, range-restricted Asian freshwater fishes.
