Macrognathus zebrinus, the zebra spiny eel, is a slender, boldly patterned spiny eel of the rivers and floodplains of Myanmar, Thailand and neighbouring parts of South and Southeast Asia. Despite its sinuous, elongate form and common name, it is not a true eel in any phylogenetic sense — it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels of the order Synbranchiformes, more closely related to the swamp eels than to the marine and catadromous Anguilla. Its name comes from the vivid dark-on-pale zebra-like barring that runs the length of the body and fins, making it one of the more visually striking small spiny eels available to aquarists. At a maximum of around 10.5 in it is a manageable size for a dedicated keeper willing to meet its requirements for soft substrate, meaty food and an escape-proof tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Macrognathus zebrinus was originally described by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1858 under the original combination Mastacembelus zebrinus, with a type locality in the Irrawaddy River region of Burma (now Myanmar). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences — the authority for valid names) confirms the current placement in the genus Macrognathus and the authority as (Blyth, 1858), the parentheses indicating that the species has been moved from its original genus. No junior synonyms are recorded for this species.

The genus Macrognathus sits within the family Mastacembelidae — the spiny eels — and within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the most important taxonomic fact about the fish: it is not a true eel. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes and include the catadromous freshwater eels (Anguilla) and a diversity of marine groups. The Mastacembelidae are convergently eel-shaped but are no closer to Anguilliformes than any other perciform lineage; their sinuous form is an adaptation to a burrowing, benthic way of life. Within Synbranchiformes, the Mastacembelidae are the sister group to the Synbranchidae (swamp eels) rather than to any true eel.

The African spiny eels — members of Mastacembelus in the broad sense — were historically split among genera such as Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus, most of which are now folded back into Mastacembelus. Macrognathus, by contrast, is a purely Asian genus and has been the accepted home for this species without major controversy.

Morphology

Macrognathus zebrinus reaches a maximum recorded length of 10.5 in total length, though aquarium fish commonly remain in the range of 7–10 in. The body is greatly elongate, nearly cylindrical in cross-section toward the head and laterally compressed toward the tail. As in all Mastacembelidae, the body is scaleless to casual inspection — the skin is smooth and heavily coated in mucus, with tiny embedded scales that give no obvious texture. The snout is extended into a fleshy, flexible proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, adapted for probing soft substrate and detecting chemical cues from buried prey.

The most distinctive feature is the pattern: a pale silvery or cream background is crossed by a series of dark, bold, irregular vertical bars and blotches along the flanks — a pattern commonly described as zebra-like and the direct source of both the species epithet and the common name. The fins carry a similar dark-on-pale barring. A row of isolated dorsal spines runs along the back ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which is continuous with the anal fin around the pointed tail — the hallmark anatomy of the spiny eels. Females approaching breeding condition tend to become noticeably fuller in the belly; otherwise the sexes are externally very similar.

Habitat

In the wild, Macrognathus zebrinus inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams and seasonally flooded lowland areas in the river systems of Myanmar (Irrawaddy and Salween basins), Thailand (Siam region rivers and tributaries) and northern India (Brahmaputra drainage and Assam tributaries). It is a fish of lowland plains rather than upland torrents — its preferred habitat is slow or still water over soft beds of sand and fine sediment, among dense riparian vegetation, submerged roots and accumulations of leaf litter.

Water conditions across its range are warm and soft to neutral: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and hardness in the soft to moderately hard range (approximately 4–12 dGH). This is typical lowland tropical river water, soft and slightly acidic or neutral — not the hard, alkaline conditions of the African rift lakes. The species is not brackish-tolerant and is a strict freshwater fish. Like other Mastacembelidae it is a benthic burrower, spending daylight hours concealed within soft substrate or dense cover and becoming active at dusk and through the night.

Feeding

Macrognathus zebrinus is a nocturnal, benthic carnivore. In the wild it forages after dark along river and stream beds, using its sensitive fleshy snout to detect and extract small aquatic invertebrates from soft substrate and leaf litter. Recorded prey items include mosquito larvae, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic annelid worms and the nymphs of aquatic insects — the animals that live within and just above soft sediment.

In the aquarium it should be offered meaty foods in the evening when it becomes naturally active. Live and frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp are reliable staples; Mysis shrimp and other small frozen invertebrates are also accepted. Newly imported fish are often shy and may refuse food during daylight or when disturbed, so initial feeding after lights-out helps them settle and begin eating reliably. Unlike the large predatory spiny eels, its small adult size means it does not present a significant threat to fish companions above about 1–1.5 in.

Mating

Macrognathus zebrinus is a spiny eel — a Mastacembelidae — and breeds by egg-scattering in fresh water. It does not undertake any form of migration to breed and is not catadromous; it has no biological connection to the semelparous marine-spawning strategy of the true eels (Anguilla). Spawning is thought to be triggered by the rising, warming waters associated with seasonal flooding in its native river systems, which temporarily expand the fish's foraging and reproductive habitat into inundated marginal vegetation.

In captive accounts a conditioning pair will court among fine-leaved plants or root tangles, and spawning involves the two fish entwining and scattering adhesive eggs among vegetation, plant roots and leaf litter on or near the substrate. There is no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself, and neither parent remains with or tends the eggs.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Macrognathus zebrinus is rarely documented and there is no established aquarium protocol. Where it has occurred, spawning was preceded by conditioning the adults on a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates and by simulating seasonal change — typically a large water change with slightly cooler, softer water to mimic the onset of the monsoon season. Breeding temperature is in the range of 75–82 °F.

Adhesive eggs are scattered among fine plants or leaf litter and incubate in approximately 24–48 hours. The larvae are very small on hatching and require microscopic first foods — infusoria or commercially prepared rotifers — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. There is no parental care at any stage; adults should be removed after spawning. Because successful rearing is so uncommon and undocumented in the hobby literature, nearly all zebra spiny eels in the trade are wild-caught.

In the aquarium

Macrognathus zebrinus is one of the more manageable spiny eels for the home aquarium by virtue of its modest adult size — an adult at 8–10 in can be comfortably housed in a 35.5–47 in aquarium provided the key conditions are met. The most important of these is a deep bed of soft, fine sand into which the fish can fully burrow; a coarse or gravel substrate will abrade the scaleless skin and prevent the natural burrowing behaviour the fish relies on for security.

Like all Mastacembelidae, it is highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality — the scaleless, mucus-covered skin absorbs dissolved substances readily, and copper at therapeutic doses lethal to parasites is also lethal to the fish. A mature, well-filtered system with stable parameters in the soft-acid to neutral range is essential. It is also an accomplished escape artist: like other spiny eels it can and will squeeze through tiny gaps in the aquarium lid or ooze out around filter inlets, and a fully sealed, escape-proof cover is mandatory. The species is nocturnal, spending daylight hours buried or sheltering in caves and overhangs; rockwork, PVC pipe and dense planting provide the cover it requires to feel secure and begin feeding. Compatible tankmates are peaceful to moderately active species large enough not to be swallowed, sharing similar water requirements.

Conservation

Macrognathus zebrinus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of its wide distribution across the river systems of Myanmar, Thailand and northern India and the absence of evidence for a range-wide population decline. Populations appear stable within the Irrawaddy, Salween and Brahmaputra drainages that form the core of its range.

The principal longer-term threat to the species is habitat degradation within these river systems, particularly dam construction, water extraction and lowland floodplain conversion, which can reduce the slow-water and seasonally flooded habitats the fish depends on. It is taken locally for both the food-fish trade and the ornamental aquarium trade, though not at a scale currently considered to threaten the species. Its Least Concern status is appropriate given present knowledge, but data on population structure and the effects of localised collection pressure remain sparse.
