Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus pancalus was formally described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 in his landmark account of the fishes of the Ganges. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places it in the genus Macrognathus, the Asian sister-genus to the sprawling Mastacembelus, within the family Mastacembelidae and order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the essential fact about the fish: it is an eel only in body plan. The true eels of the order Anguilliformes — including the familiar Anguilla species of the aquarium and food trades — are entirely unrelated; the spiny eels' elongate, burrowing body is a case of convergent evolution, not shared ancestry.
The species epithet pancalus is a Latinisation of the Assamese vernacular name for the fish. The genus name Macrognathus combines the Greek makros (large) and gnathos (jaw), referring to the long, probing snout that is characteristic of the group. Common trade names include barred spiny eel and striped spiny eel, both referring to the pattern of dark bars or streaks along the body.
Morphology
Macrognathus pancalus is a small spiny eel, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 7.5 in total length, making it considerably more compact than its aquarium relatives the fire eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia) and tire-track eel (Mastacembelus favus). The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, scaleless to the eye and covered with a fine coat of mucus over tiny embedded scales. The snout is drawn into a short, fleshy proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils for probing substrate. Along the dorsal ridge runs a row of short, isolated spines — the diagnostic feature of all spiny eels — ahead of a soft dorsal fin that merges continuously around the tail with the anal fin.
The ground colour is typically tan to brown with a series of irregular dark bars, blotches or stripes along the flanks — the pattern that earns it the trade names "barred" or "striped" spiny eel. A dark lateral stripe is usually present. Females in breeding condition become noticeably fuller-bodied through the belly; beyond this there is little reliable external difference between the sexes.
Habitat
Macrognathus pancalus is native to the freshwater and sometimes brackish lowland waters of the Indian subcontinent and adjacent regions, occurring across the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, as well as in rivers of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. It is a fish of slow to sluggish, shallow plains rivers, floodplains, marshes, canals, and estuarine margins, never recorded above about 1201 ft altitude according to FishBase — firmly a lowland species.
It inhabits both fresh and brackish water in the wild, seeking out soft substrates and sheltering among dense aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and water hyacinth. In captivity it shows a preference for gentle water movement, warm temperatures in the range of 73–82 °F, and a soft to neutral pH of 6.5–7.5. Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based treatments and to poor water quality.
Feeding
Macrognathus pancalus is a benthic carnivore, feeding in the wild on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, annelid worms, and small fish that it locates by probing the bottom with its sensitive, fleshy snout. Studies of wild feeding intensity show that the species feeds most actively during early maturity and again after spawning, with a peak feeding period in autumn.
In the aquarium it should be offered meaty foods at night, when it is most active: bloodworm, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and Mysis shrimp are all taken readily, and small earthworms are particularly effective. Live and frozen invertebrates should form the core of the diet; newly imported fish may refuse to feed in daylight or in the presence of other active fish, and feeding after lights-out generally helps them settle and begin eating consistently.
Mating
Macrognathus pancalus is an egg-scattering spawner that does not form lasting pair bonds and gives no parental care to its eggs or offspring — the standard reproductive mode across the Mastacembelidae. It is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine spawning migration; it breeds entirely in fresh water. In the wild, spawning is understood to be triggered by the seasonal onset of monsoon rains, when rising water temperatures, increased flow, and newly flooded vegetation provide the cues for reproductive activity.
A courting pair comes together briefly in shallow, vegetated margins, entwining among plant stems and roots before scattering a number of small, adhesive eggs. There is no nest construction, no pair guarding, and no subsequent involvement by either parent. Most of what is known about courtship comes from captive observations, since the species is small, nocturnal, and secretive in the field.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Macrognathus pancalus has been documented, including under research conditions with hormonal induction, making it one of the more frequently spawned spiny eels in controlled settings — though home-aquarium breeding remains uncommon. Breeding temperatures of 81–84 °F have been recorded in captive spawnings, slightly above the species' everyday maintenance range, and the presence of fine-leaved aquatic plants or roots for egg attachment is important.
The adhesive eggs hatch in a few days; the larvae are tiny and require infusoria-grade first foods before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Because the adults scatter and then entirely abandon the eggs, the eggs and early larvae should be removed from any tank containing adults if the keeper wishes to raise a brood. The species is small enough that a dedicated breeding setup of moderate size is feasible, but most fish in the trade remain wild-caught or produced by specialist farms rather than home breeders.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus pancalus is among the more manageable spiny eels for the home aquarium, largely by virtue of its modest adult size: at under 7.5 in it fits tanks that would be too small for the fire or tire-track eel. A tank of 31.5–39.5 in is a reasonable minimum for an adult, furnished with a deep bed of fine, soft sand for burrowing, plenty of plant cover and shaded retreats such as pipes or crevices, and gentle filtration. Being scaleless it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to dissolved ammonia and nitrite, so a mature, well-maintained system is essential.
Like every spiny eel it is a determined escape artist. A tight, sealed lid with no gaps is non-negotiable: these fish probe every edge, breathe at the surface, and will leave an uncovered tank. It is largely nocturnal and will spend most daylight hours buried in sand or hidden in cover, becoming more active after lights-out. It can be kept with peaceful, similarly-sized community fish that are too large to be eaten, but very small companions such as nano fish and dwarf shrimp are at risk. Multiple individuals can coexist in a spacious, well-structured setup.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Macrognathus pancalus as Least Concern in 2010. The species has a wide native range across the river systems of the Indian subcontinent, occupies a broad variety of lowland freshwater and lightly brackish habitats, and shows high population resilience according to FishBase's vulnerability scoring. There is no evidence of a range-wide population decline at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the lowland rivers, floodplains, and wetlands it depends on across India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar face growing pressure from water extraction, agricultural runoff, habitat modification, and floodplain drainage. The species is harvested locally for food as well as the ornamental trade. Its current Least Concern status reflects the breadth of its range rather than an absence of local pressures, and the ongoing degradation of South Asian freshwater habitats warrants continued monitoring of widespread but habitat-dependent species such as this one.
