Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus ansorgii was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1905 from an African specimen, honouring the collector William Harry Ansorge, a British naturalist and physician who gathered many African specimens for the Natural History Museum in London in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The species was originally placed in the subgenus or genus Caecomastacembelus, a grouping used for African spiny eels with reduced or vestigial eyes. A taxonomic revision of Mastacembelidae — evaluating subfamily divisions and African generic boundaries — subsequently consolidated Caecomastacembelus and Aethiomastacembelus back into Mastacembelus, where the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the international authority for valid names) now records the species.
The placement of M. ansorgii within Mastacembelidae is clear: it is a spiny eel of the order Synbranchiformes, sharing the order with the air-breathing swamp eels (Synbranchidae) and closely related to them rather than to the true eels (Anguilliformes). The eel-like body plan of Mastacembelidae is a convergence on a burrowing, elongate lifestyle, not a mark of close relationship with marine or catadromous eels.
Morphology
Like all members of Mastacembelidae, M. ansorgii has a highly elongate, laterally compressed body tapering to a pointed tail. The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are continuous around the tail tip, and the anterior portion of the dorsal fin is represented by a series of short, isolated spines — the hallmark that gives spiny eels their common name. The snout is drawn out into a fleshy, mobile proboscis tipped with paired tubular nostrils, well suited to probing soft substrates for food. The body is scaleless in appearance, covered instead with small embedded scales and a thick mucous coat.
FishBase records the maximum total length as 17.5 in, making this a mid-sized spiny eel. The original description referred to reduced or vestigial eyes — characteristic of Caecomastacembelus — suggesting that M. ansorgii may inhabit dim, turbid, or subterranean environments where vision is less critical. Detailed colour pattern data are sparse in the literature; the species is poorly documented compared with the popular hobbyist spiny eels of Asia.
Habitat
The precise native range and habitat preferences of Mastacembelus ansorgii are incompletely documented, contributing to its Data Deficient status. As an African Mastacembelus it likely inhabits freshwater environments — rivers, streams, or marginal wetlands — in the drainage where Boulenger's original specimen was collected. The original description's placement in Caecomastacembelus hints at turbid or low-light conditions, as this grouping was associated with taxa showing eye reduction.
Related African and Asian spiny eels typically occupy warm fresh water with soft to neutral chemistry, ranging broadly between 24 and 82 °F and pH 6.5 to 7.5, burrowing into soft substrate by day and foraging nocturnally. Without detailed field data specific to M. ansorgii these parameters should be taken as indicative rather than confirmed; published locality and habitat records for this species remain thin.
Feeding
Mastacembelus ansorgii, like other spiny eels, is almost certainly a nocturnal carnivore that uses its probing, tubular-nostrilled snout to locate benthic prey within and on the substrate. Related Mastacembelus species subsist on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, and small crustaceans — which they root out of soft sand, mud, and leaf litter after dark.
There are no published feeding studies specific to M. ansorgii. In the absence of detailed dietary data, the feeding biology inferred from close relatives and from the morphology of the probing snout and down-angled mouth is the best guide available. In captivity, related species accept live and frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and similar invertebrate foods offered after lights-out.

Mastacembelus ansorgii is a spiny eel and, like all members of Mastacembelidae, is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine spawning migration. Spiny eels breed entirely in fresh water as substrate egg-scatterers. Breeding
As a spiny eel of the family Mastacembelidae, Mastacembelus ansorgii is an egg-scatterer. Hatching and larval development follow the temperature-dependent pattern seen in other mastacembelids. Breeding in spiny eels is generally rare in the home aquarium, typically requiring a large, mature system, a compatible conditioned pair, and a simulated wet-season trigger — a period of large, slightly cooler water changes that mimics the onset of rains.
There are no published or credibly documented captive spawnings of M. ansorgii in the hobbyist literature. Given the species' obscurity and limited presence in the trade, this is unsurprising. The breeding biology outlined here is extrapolated from the well-documented family pattern; direct observation for this species is still needed.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus ansorgii is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby; it is a poorly known African spiny eel with little commercial collection and no established captive-bred supply. Should specimens become available, the care requirements would follow those of other mid-sized Mastacembelus: a spacious aquarium with a deep bed of soft sand for burrowing, multiple cave and pipe retreats, subdued lighting, and meaty foods offered after dark. Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality, so a stable, mature filtration system is essential.
The outstanding care concern with any spiny eel is containment: they are accomplished escape artists, capable of climbing up filter intakes, squeezing through tiny gaps, and leaving the water entirely to perish on the floor. A tight-fitting, fully sealed lid is not optional. The possible eye reduction in this species may indicate an adaptation to dim or turbid conditions, suggesting it would appreciate dimly lit, richly decorated housing over a bright, sparse set-up.
Conservation
Mastacembelus ansorgii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a status assigned in 2007. This reflects the fundamental problem with the species: there is insufficient information on its range, population size, habitat requirements, and the threats it faces to make a meaningful assessment of extinction risk. It is not a declaration of safety — a Data Deficient species may be threatened, but the evidence to determine this is absent.
The African freshwater environments where spiny eels typically occur face widespread pressures including habitat conversion, pollution, water extraction, and siltation, and narrow-range or poorly surveyed species are particularly vulnerable to undetected decline. Targeted surveys to establish the distribution, population status, and ecology of M. ansorgii are needed before a more informative conservation assessment can be made.
