Mastacembelus apectoralis is a small, remarkable spiny eel endemic to Lake Tanganyika, distinguished above all else by the complete absence of pectoral fins — a feature so unusual among vertebrates that the species name records it directly. It is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes, kin to the swamp eels rather than to the catadromous, marine-spawning true eels of the family Anguillidae. Its eel-like body is a convergent adaptation for life close to hard substrate, and in its case that substrate is the rocky shallows and rubble margins of one of the world's deepest and oldest rift lakes. Described only in 2011, this remains a poorly known species; virtually no aquarium literature covers it, and it is almost never seen in the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus apectoralis was described by Brown, Britz, Bills, Rüber and Day in 2011, part of a wave of taxonomic work that clarified the remarkable species flock of spiny eels living in Lake Tanganyika. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. The order also contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae); it does not contain the true eels, which belong to the entirely separate order Anguilliformes. The spiny-eel body form is convergent — an independent adaptation to the same burrowing, sinuous way of life.

The genus Mastacembelus has a complex nomenclatural history in Africa. Many African spiny eels were long housed in segregate genera erected on the basis of scalation and rostral-appendage characters: Aethiomastacembelus was coined in 2005, and Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus were earlier candidates. Subsequent phylogenetic work found these groupings unsupported and synonymised them back into Mastacembelus. M. apectoralis was described into Mastacembelus from the outset and has never been placed elsewhere, but earlier literature may mention the synonymized African genera in related comparative contexts. The valid combination as of current taxonomy is Mastacembelus apectoralis Brown, Britz, Bills, Rüber & Day, 2011.

Morphology

The defining character of M. apectoralis is the complete absence of pectoral fins — hence the epithet apectoralis (without pectorals). This is an extreme morphological reduction not seen in other Tanganyikan spiny eels and sets the species apart immediately from its congeners in the lake. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 6.5 in, making it a small spiny eel by comparison with the large commercially kept species.

Scalation is highly reduced: scales are present only along the margin of the caudal peduncle and between the caudal-fin rays, leaving the rest of the body essentially naked — a more extreme reduction than in most Mastacembelus. The adductor mandibulae muscles are well developed, producing a noticeably rounded and muscular head shape. The rostral appendage, the fleshy proboscis present in other spiny eels for probing the substrate, is very short relative to other Tanganyikan congeners. Dorsal-spine counts run 32–34 and vertebral counts 77–80. As in all mastacembelids, the body is elongate and laterally compressed posteriorly, covered in a coat of mucus in place of a conventional scale armour.

Habitat

Mastacembelus apectoralis is known only from Lake Tanganyika, where records place it from the Zambian portion of the lake, at depths of approximately 10–23 ft. Lake Tanganyika is a rift lake of ancient and exceptional character: it is among the deepest lakes on Earth, with highly oxygenated, hard, alkaline water quite unlike the soft, acidic lowland rivers that most people associate with tropical Africa. Water chemistry in the lake runs to pH 8.3–9.5 and temperatures in the shallows where this species has been collected are typically 73–79 °F, cooling slightly with depth within its recorded range.

Like other members of the Tanganyikan Mastacembelus flock, M. apectoralis almost certainly inhabits the rocky littoral zone, sheltering in crevices or under rubble near the lake bed and emerging to forage nocturnally. The reduced scalation and the absence of pectoral fins suggest a highly specialised existence, though the details of its precise microhabitat preference remain undescribed. This is a rift-lake species living in hard, alkaline, oxygen-rich conditions — the opposite of the soft-acidic generalisation that applies to many Asian and West African spiny eels.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding study of M. apectoralis has been published. Based on general mastacembelid biology and its position as a benthic predator in the lake's littoral zone, it almost certainly feeds nocturnally on small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, amphipods, small molluscs — and possibly small fishes. The well-developed jaw musculature evident in the species description points to a capable gape relative to its small body size.

The short rostral appendage, compared to that of some other spiny eels, may reduce the fine-probing capability seen in species like M. erythrotaenia, but the snout still functions as a sensory organ for detecting prey at close range in low-light conditions. Given the high invertebrate diversity of the Tanganyikan littoral, the available food base is rich, and the species' small size is consistent with an invertebrate-focused diet rather than the fish-heavy diet of larger congeners.

Mating

No mating observations have been published for Mastacembelus apectoralis, and the species has not been documented in captivity. As a member of Mastacembelidae, it is expected to follow the spiny-eel pattern: egg-scattering in fresh water with no parental care. This is not the breeding system of a true eel — Mastacembelidae are not catadromous, do not migrate to the sea, and do not die after spawning.

In other spiny eels, spawning appears to be triggered by seasonal environmental cues, including rising water levels or temperature shifts associated with wet-season onset. In a stable rift lake like Tanganyika, the proximate cues may differ from those of river-dwelling spiny eels, but the reproductive biology is otherwise assumed to be broadly similar: a courting pair scatter adhesive eggs, most likely among rocky substrate or sparse vegetation, with no subsequent guarding of eggs or larvae.

Breeding

Mastacembelus apectoralis has not been bred in the home aquarium and is essentially unknown in the trade. No captive breeding reports exist in the hobbyist literature. As a spiny eel, it is expected to scatter adhesive eggs among substrate — vegetation, rubble, or crevice margins — without providing any parental care. Eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended; this is the standard Mastacembelidae reproductive mode and is distinct from the bubble-nest-guarding behaviour of swamp eels (Monopterus) or the seaward spawning migration of the true eels.

Given that even well-established and much-kept spiny eels such as M. erythrotaenia are only rarely bred by hobbyists, successful aquarium breeding of this obscure Tanganyikan endemic would be an exceptional achievement. The very small number of specimens likely ever to enter collections, combined with the absence of documented aquarium husbandry, makes the prospect remote for the foreseeable future.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus apectoralis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is not available in the ornamental trade and has apparently never been maintained under documented aquarium conditions. Were specimens to become available, the care requirements would follow the Mastacembelidae template — scaleless body demanding copper-free, high-quality water; secretive and nocturnal habits requiring caves, crevices and dim conditions; an escape-artist physiology that demands a sealed and tightly-lidded tank — combined with the very specific water chemistry of its native habitat.

As a Lake Tanganyika endemic, it would require hard, alkaline rift-lake water (pH 8.3–9.5, high carbonate hardness) rather than the soft-neutral water appropriate for most Asian or West African spiny eels. Its small size — maximum 6.5 in SL — and likely cryptic disposition suggest a relatively modest aquarium footprint by spiny-eel standards, but the lack of any husbandry data means this is speculative. Any keeper who somehow obtained specimens would be working entirely without precedent. Like all Mastacembelidae, it would be sensitive to copper-based medications and poor water quality; like all sinuous mastacembelids, it would escape through any gap in an aquarium cover.

Conservation

Mastacembelus apectoralis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it falls into the large group of recently described, narrow-range, poorly known species for which no assessment yet exists. Its known range appears confined to the Zambian sector of Lake Tanganyika, at relatively shallow depths, which gives it an inherently limited global footprint. Lake Tanganyika faces documented pressures including overfishing across much of its length, watershed deforestation driving increased siltation into the lake's littoral zones, and the long-term threats of climate-driven thermal stratification and reduced oxygenation at depth.

For a species living at 10–23 ft over what is probably a restricted stretch of rocky shoreline, siltation of the rocky substrate is a plausible direct threat. The fact that M. apectoralis was described only in 2011 means it was invisible to any earlier surveys or assessments, and its true range within the lake — how far along the Zambian coast, whether it extends into Tanzanian or DRC waters — is unknown. A formal IUCN Data Deficient listing, at minimum, seems warranted.
