Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus alboguttatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1893. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. This taxonomic placement is the key fact for understanding the fish: its sinuous, elongate body is a convergent adaptation to a burrowing lifestyle and is not a sign of kinship with the true eels of the order Anguilliformes.
The genus Mastacembelus spans both Africa and tropical Asia, and its African members were historically placed in segregate genera such as Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus before being returned to Mastacembelus. The species alboguttatus is an Asian member of the genus; it has always carried its current generic name and has not been moved through the taxonomic revisions that affected the African species flock. The specific epithet alboguttatus combines the Latin albus (white) and guttatus (spotted, as if sprinkled with drops) — 'white-spotted', referring directly to the pale blotched pattern that earned it the starlight eel trade name.
Morphology
Mastacembelus alboguttatus reaches a maximum recorded total length of 19.5 in, making it a mid-sized spiny eel — larger than the common fire-eel relative kept in small community tanks, but considerably smaller than the great Asian species such as the fire eel and tire-track eel. The body is greatly elongate, laterally compressed toward the tail, and effectively scaleless in appearance, covered by tiny embedded scales beneath a layer of protective mucus. The snout is extended into the characteristic fleshy, trunk-like proboscis of the genus, tipped with tubular nostrils used to probe the substrate for prey.
The dorsal surface carries a row of isolated spines — the 'spiny' of spiny eel, with 35 dorsal spines recorded — ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which runs continuously with the caudal and anal fins around the tapering rear. The patterning is the species' most distinctive feature: FishBase records the body and fins as bearing numerous small round pale spots, with the body further marked by rings of nine to ten small pale spots arranged around larger dark spots, producing the 'starlight' appearance. Sexes are not externally obvious, though ripe females are likely fuller-bodied as in related species.
Habitat
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is endemic to a limited range in Southeast and South Asia: confirmed from the Sittaung River and Salween River systems of Myanmar and Thailand, the Manipur River of northeastern India, and possibly the Irrawaddy drainage. FishBase classifies it as freshwater and demersal, occurring in tropical rivers rather than in brackish or coastal environments.
Unlike many tropical spiny eels that favour slow, murky lowland floodplains, M. alboguttatus appears to prefer rivers and tributaries with rocky substrates and moderate to strong water circulation. This preference distinguishes it from the soft-bottomed, sluggish-water relatives common in the aquarium trade and has direct implications for aquarium husbandry — it requires filtration and flow that many eel-keepers do not associate with the group. Water parameters in its range suggest warm, near-neutral to mildly alkaline conditions: the species tolerates a pH of approximately 7.0–8.5 and temperatures of 75–82 °F.
Feeding
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is a carnivore, as are all spiny eels. In its natural habitat it feeds on small aquatic creatures, using its sensitive, probing snout to locate benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar prey — across rocky riverbeds. The down-turned mouth and elongate body are adaptations for hunting along and within the substrate rather than in open water, and much of its foraging takes place nocturnally.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen foods readily: bloodworm and small aquatic worms are reliable staples, supplemented with small shrimp pieces and other meaty invertebrate foods. Some individuals can be trained onto sinking prepared foods with patience, but live or frozen prey tends to provoke a more reliable feeding response, especially in newly imported fish. Because the species is reportedly territorial, care should be taken when keeping multiple specimens or when housing it with small fish that could be mistaken for prey.
Mating
Like all spiny eels, Mastacembelus alboguttatus is an egg-scatterer that does not undertake the semelparous marine migration of the true eels of the genus Anguilla. It is not catadromous: it breeds in fresh water. Specific mating observations for this species are sparse — it is rarely kept and almost never spawned in the aquarium — but the reproductive pattern expected from Mastacembelus generally involves a courting pair that entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among sheltered locations such as rock crevices, plant roots and submerged debris.
Spawning in wild populations of the genus is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased flow and the approach of the wet season — that signal conditions favourable for larval survival. No pair bond or territorial defence of a spawning site has been described for this or closely related Asian spiny eels.
Breeding
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is not documented as having been bred in the home aquarium, and breeding in captivity is not well documented for this species. The general pattern for Mastacembelus, where captive spawning has been recorded, involves pairs scattering adhesive eggs in sheltered locations — among rock piles, plant roots or similar refuges — with no subsequent parental care. Eggs hatch after a few days and the larvae are very small, requiring fine first foods before graduating to larger live prey.
The rarity of the species in the trade — it is described as uncommon and infrequently offered — means that most specimens sold are wild-caught. The combination of size, territorial behaviour, specific current and substrate requirements, and the general difficulty of sexing spiny eels conspires to keep captive reproduction rare. Breeders attempting to spawn this species would likely need a large, mature aquarium with rocky shelter, soft-bottomed spawning refuges, and a seasonal water-change and temperature-shift protocol to simulate monsoon onset.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is an uncommon and moderately demanding aquarium fish. At a maximum of 19.5 in total length it needs a spacious aquarium — a minimum of 130 US gal and 59 in of tank length is recommended — with a soft sandy substrate for burrowing, plenty of rock caves and ceramic pipe shelters, and, crucially, a pump or powerhead providing moderate to strong water movement. This current requirement sets it apart from most other spiny eels offered in the hobby and must be matched to keep the fish in good condition.
Like all Mastacembelidae, it is effectively scaleless and is therefore sensitive to copper-based medications, which must be avoided entirely. It is also a skilled escape artist: spiny eels climb, squeeze and breathe air at the surface, and will find and exploit any gap in an aquarium lid. A fully sealed, tight-fitting cover is essential. The species is described as territorial toward conspecifics but generally peaceful with fish too large to eat; small fish should not be kept as tankmates. It is uncommon in the aquarium trade and, when available, will typically be wild-caught from Myanmar or Thailand.
Conservation
Mastacembelus alboguttatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Although its documented range is comparatively limited — the Sittaung, Salween and Manipur river systems, with a possible extension into the Irrawaddy — it is considered to be without immediate conservation concern at the species level.
That said, FishBase notes that the species is threatened by habitat loss driven by deforestation, dam construction and overfishing — pressures that are intensifying across its range in Myanmar, Thailand and northeastern India. It is also consumed locally as a food fish, which adds harvesting pressure to what is already a moderately small and poorly documented range. Given that it is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and no wild population data are available, a cautious view of its status is warranted, and any future range assessments should incorporate survey data from the Irrawaddy and adjacent drainages where its presence remains uncertain.
