Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus albomaculatus was described by Max Poll in 1953, and its authority is recorded as Poll, 1953 in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., the governing authority for valid names). The valid genus is Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, which itself sits within the order Synbranchiformes alongside the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). The Mastacembelidae are not closely related to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes — the elongate, scaleless body is a convergent adaptation to a burrowing lifestyle, not a phylogenetic signal.
The African members of Mastacembelus were historically divided across several segregate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus — before being consolidated back into Mastacembelus. Mastacembelus albomaculatus belongs firmly to the African radiation of the genus, which spans West and Central African river systems and, elsewhere on the continent, the rift lakes and their tributary networks. The species epithet albomaculatus is Latin for 'white-spotted' (albus = white; maculatus = spotted), describing what are presumably pale or whitish spots on the body. No synonyms are recorded in the literature for this species.
Morphology
Like all spiny eels, Mastacembelus albomaculatus has a greatly elongate, laterally compressed body that tapers to a pointed tail, with the dorsal, caudal and anal fins running continuously around the rear of the body. Along the back, a series of short, isolated spines precede the soft dorsal fin — the defining character of the family and the source of the common name. The snout is drawn into a fleshy, mobile rostral tip with tubular nostrils, adapted for probing soft substrate in search of prey. The body appears scaleless to the naked eye, though minute embedded scales are present under the heavy coating of mucus that covers the fish.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8.5 in, making this a modestly sized species by spiny-eel standards. The species epithet suggests pale spots on the flanks or dorsum, though detailed colour descriptions from freshly preserved or live specimens are sparse in the accessible literature. As in other Mastacembelus, females are likely to be deeper-bodied than males when gravid, though no formal documentation of sexual dimorphism exists for this species.
Habitat
Mastacembelus albomaculatus is native to the Congo River basin of Central Africa, one of the world's largest and most biodiverse river systems. The Congo and its tributaries drain a vast lowland rainforest and carry soft, warm, moderately acidic water — conditions typical of West and Central African rivers and broadly suitable for the species. FishBase lists its habitat as freshwater rivers, consistent with the riverine and floodplain environments that most African Mastacembelus favour.
Like its relatives, it almost certainly lives in association with soft sandy or muddy substrate into which it can burrow, sheltering by day under leaf litter, submerged roots, or among aquatic vegetation and emerging at night to hunt. Water temperatures across the lowland Congo basin generally run around 75–86 °F, and the river's characteristically soft, slightly acidic chemistry (pH approximately 6–7) is the baseline for the species.
Feeding
Mastacembelus albomaculatus is a carnivore. By analogy with its congeners and the broader Mastacembelidae, it is a nocturnal, benthic feeder: it uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate invertebrates buried in or moving across soft substrate, taking insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and probably small fishes. The elongate body and down-turned mouth are the tools of an animal built to hunt along the bottom in low light rather than to pursue prey in open water.
In the aquarium it can be offered live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms — presented in the evening when the fish is naturally active. Feeding after lights-out reduces stress and increases uptake in newly introduced individuals.
Mating
Mastacembelus albomaculatus is a spiny eel, and spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners that give no parental care. There is no record of spawning in captivity for this specific species in the accessible literature. In related African and Asian Mastacembelus the onset of the wet season — rising water levels, increased rainfall, slight drops in temperature followed by warming — is the principal spawning trigger, and pairs scatter adhesive eggs among fine aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or leaf litter in shallow water at the flooded margins of rivers.
This species is not catadromous and does not undertake a marine spawning migration; it is a freshwater resident throughout its life. No nest is built and the eggs are abandoned after spawning. Because Mastacembelus albomaculatus is seldom kept and essentially undocumented in the aquarium trade, mating behaviour remains unobserved in captivity.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Mastacembelus albomaculatus is documented. By extrapolation from related spiny eels, spawning would involve a pair entwining among vegetation or fine root masses and scattering a clutch of small, adhesive eggs. There is no parental care — neither egg guarding nor larval tending — and the eggs hatch within a few days under warm conditions. The larvae are tiny and require very fine first foods such as infusoria before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
Spawning in spiny eels generally follows simulation of the wet season: a period of large, slightly cooler water changes followed by warming and ideally a drop in barometric pressure. Conditioning pairs on a varied, protein-rich diet of live and frozen invertebrates over several weeks ahead of a planned spawning attempt improves outcomes in the congeners for which hobbyist accounts exist.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus albomaculatus is a small-to-medium spiny eel that is rarely if ever encountered in the aquarium trade. At 8.5 in it is a manageable size compared with giants such as Mastacembelus erythrotaenia, and could in principle be housed in a well-filtered aquarium of 31.5–39.5 in that provides a deep bed of fine sand for burrowing, along with caves, pipes, and shaded retreats. Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications, so treatment of disease requires careful selection of copper-free alternatives, and water quality must be maintained to a high standard.
Every spiny eel is an accomplished escape artist, capable of squeezing through the smallest gap in a lid, breathing at the surface, and exploring the floor with fatal results. A fully sealed, weighted lid is essential. The species is best kept with peaceful tankmates too large to be eaten; small tetras or fry will be taken at night. It is nocturnal and should be fed after lights-out. Water chemistry matching the soft, warm conditions of the Congo basin — 75–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.0 — is recommended.
Conservation
Mastacembelus albomaculatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Many African spiny eels, particularly those with restricted ranges or those described from relatively few specimens, fall into this gap: they are neither widespread enough to be demonstrably Least Concern nor data-rich enough for a formal assessment, and they receive little attention from conservation bodies relative to more charismatic taxa.
The Congo River basin, while still largely intact compared with many tropical river systems, faces increasing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, sand extraction, deforestation in headwater catchments, and proposed large-scale hydroelectric development. Narrow-range endemics in such a vast system can be locally vulnerable even when range-wide data are sparse. Until a formal assessment is conducted, the precautionary approach for any Congo basin spiny eel is to support wild-catch fisheries through responsible purchasing and to prioritise captive propagation efforts where populations can be established.
