Mastacembelus batesii is a West and Central African spiny eel described by Boulenger in 1911 and named in honour of George Latimer Bates, the British naturalist who collected widely in Cameroon in the early twentieth century. Despite its sinuous, eel-like form, this fish is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes, making it kin to the swamp eels rather than to the marine and catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. A secretive, nocturnal predator of slow rivers, swamps and vegetated lakes across Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it reaches around 15.5 in and is encountered only sporadically in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus batesii was described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911. The species name honours George Latimer Bates (1863–1940), an American-born ornithologist and naturalist who collected extensively in Cameroon and the surrounding region, supplying many new specimens to European museums in the early twentieth century.

For much of the twentieth century the African spiny eels were divided among several genera, including Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus, on the basis of differences in eye development and other characters. A systematic revision by Vreven and Teugels (2005) returned all these forms to the single genus Mastacembelus, the founding genus of the family Mastacembelidae. Mastacembelus batesii is therefore a valid species under that consolidated arrangement, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it in Mastacembelus.

Mastacembelidae belongs to the order Synbranchiformes — the same order as the swamp eels — and is wholly unrelated to the true eels (Anguilliformes). The eel-like body is the result of convergent evolution on a burrowing, elongate lifestyle, not shared ancestry with marine eels.

Morphology

Mastacembelus batesii is a moderately sized African spiny eel reported to reach approximately 15.5 in in total length. Like all members of Mastacembelidae, the body is greatly elongate, sinuous and laterally compressed toward the tail. The snout is produced into a short fleshy proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, adapted for probing soft substrates and crevices in search of prey. A series of short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which merges with the caudal and anal fins around the tapering tail — the defining character that gives the family its common name.

The body is effectively scaleless to the eye; minute scales are embedded in a mucus-rich skin that offers some protection from abrasion in the dense vegetation and leaf litter the fish inhabits. Coloration in West and Central African spiny eels of this size class is typically cryptic — brownish or olive, often with a pattern of spots, blotches or faint banding that provides camouflage against a substrate of roots, mud and detritus. Detailed colour notes for M. batesii in life are not well documented in the available literature.

Habitat

Mastacembelus batesii inhabits slow-moving rivers, swamps and lakes with dense aquatic vegetation across its range in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a lowland freshwater species, most at home in calm, heavily planted margins and backwaters where it can burrow into soft substrate and shelter among roots and leaf litter.

Like other West and Central African spiny eels, it is adapted to the warm, turbid, often oxygen-limited waters of forest-margin and swampy river systems — conditions typical of the Niger and Congo drainage basins. Temperature in such habitats generally falls in the range of 75–82 °F. Specific pH and hardness data for the species are not well established in the available literature, but the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of lowland West and Central African river systems are the most likely match.

Feeding

Mastacembelus batesii is a carnivore, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates including crustaceans and insect larvae, which it locates by probing soft substrate and plant material with its sensitive, trunk-like snout. The diet is consistent with what is known of spiny eel foraging generally: a nocturnal, benthic strategy targeting small invertebrates buried in or moving through the substrate and leaf litter.

In the aquarium, spiny eels of this type accept live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, and small earthworm pieces, particularly when offered after lights-out. Most become more confident feeders once settled and may eventually take high-quality sinking pellets, though live or frozen meaty items usually remain the preference.

Mating

Mastacembelus batesii is a spiny eel and therefore a freshwater egg-scattering spawner that gives no parental care — it does not undertake any marine migration and is entirely unrelated to the catadromous true eels of the genus Anguilla. Spawning in African spiny eels of this type is thought to be triggered by seasonal rainfall and the associated rise and warming of river levels, which in their West and Central African range corresponds to the rainy season.

Courting pairs are believed to entwine among fine vegetation before scattering adhesive eggs, following the general pattern seen across Mastacembelidae. No specific published accounts of courtship behaviour in M. batesii are available, and much of what is inferred for the species rests on analogy with related West African spiny eels of similar size.

Breeding

Mastacembelus batesii scatters adhesive eggs among vegetation and substrate crevices in fresh water and provides no parental care — neither the eggs nor larvae are guarded, and the adults take no further part after spawning. This is the breeding mode shared across Mastacembelidae and is distinct from the bubble-nest-guarding parental care seen in some swamp eels (Synbranchidae) and entirely distinct from the once-in-a-lifetime, semelparous ocean spawning of the true eels.

The species has rarely if ever been bred in the home aquarium, and no detailed captive-breeding accounts appear in the available hobby literature. Like most African spiny eels, it would likely require large, mature soft-substrate quarters, correct seasonal conditioning cues (cooler water changes, increased food), and patient long-term keeping to have any prospect of spawning in captivity.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus batesii is an uncommon species in the hobby and demands the same basic care as other African spiny eels of similar size. A specimen reaching 15.5 in needs a well-filtered aquarium of at least 47 in in length, furnished with a deep bed of fine sand or soft substrate into which it can burrow, combined with shaded retreats such as clay pipes, hollow bogwood or dense planting. Spiny eels are scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to any deterioration in water quality; a mature, stable system is essential.

All spiny eels are confirmed escape artists. They climb, squeeze through the smallest openings, breathe at the surface, and will leave any aquarium with gaps in the cover and die on the floor. A completely sealed, tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable. The species is nocturnal; it will spend much of the day buried or hidden and emerge to feed after dark. Tank mates should be peaceful and large enough not to be swallowed. Feeding in the evening with bloodworm, earthworm pieces and similar meaty foods will keep the fish in good condition.

Conservation

Mastacembelus batesii has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its known range spans parts of Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo — countries whose freshwater biodiversity faces significant and ongoing pressure from habitat degradation, deforestation of riverine margins, water pollution, and artisanal and industrial fishing.

As a species of slow lowland rivers, swamps and densely vegetated lake margins, M. batesii is potentially sensitive to the loss or degradation of those habitats. Detailed information on its population size, range extent and responses to human pressure is lacking, and a formal IUCN assessment would be valuable. It appears in the aquarium trade only sporadically and is not among the African spiny eels traded in volume, which may reduce collection pressure relative to more widely kept species.
