Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus was described by the German ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the most important fact about the fish: the name "eel" is purely descriptive of body shape. The true eels belong to the quite separate order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels are not related to them, and their eel-like form is a case of convergent evolution on a burrowing, elongate life strategy.
African members of Mastacembelidae were long distributed across several genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus among them — before a taxonomic revision in 2005 synonymised these under Mastacembelus. Mastacembelus cryptacanthus was caught up in that consolidation, having been assigned to allied African genera in older literature; the current valid combination is Mastacembelus cryptacanthus Günther, 1867. The species epithet cryptacanthus combines the Greek kryptos (hidden) and akantha (spine or thorn), probably alluding to the characteristically low and partially concealed dorsal spines of the species.
Morphology
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is a moderately sized spiny eel, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 13.5 in. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, with the skin scaleless in appearance — embedded cycloid scales are present but small and covered by a slick mucous coat. The snout extends into a fleshy, probing proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, a characteristic feature of mastacembelids used to locate prey in the substrate.
The dorsal surface carries a row of 24 to 33 short, isolated spines ahead of the long soft dorsal fin, which merges with the anal fin around the tapering caudal end — the arrangement that gives the family its common name. FishBase records 90 to 140 anal soft rays and 95 to 118 vertebrae, counts in the upper range for the genus. Ground colour and markings in life are not well documented in the literature for this species; the trade name "Starry Night spiny eel" suggests pale spotting on a dark body, though this has not been independently confirmed in published accounts.
Habitat
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is a freshwater species, demersal in habit, occurring in the lowland river systems of coastal West and Central Africa. Its documented range spans the Ouémé basin in Benin east to the Ntem basin in southern Cameroon, the Lake Chad drainage, and Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea), a distribution that encompasses humid West African forest and savanna river systems. FishBase notes that the species occasionally enters brackish water, consistent with the behaviour of several other West African mastacembelids in coastal drainages.
Like most spiny eels, it is associated with soft-bottomed habitats — sand and mud beds in rivers, streams and pools — where it can burrow and shelter by day. Water temperatures across its range are broadly tropical, with FishBase reporting a range of 75–86 °F. The species is classified as demersal and freshwater, suggesting preference for the lower water column and substrate over open-water habitats.
Feeding
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is a carnivorous, demersal predator. Like other mastacembelids it uses its elongate, sensitive snout to probe the substrate for invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — and presumably small fishes where these are accessible. The morphology of the species, with its probing proboscis and down-turned mouth, is well suited to hunting along and within the substrate rather than in the water column.
Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are lacking in the published literature. By analogy with closely related West African mastacembelids and with the family's general ecology, it is most likely a nocturnal or crepuscular feeder that emerges from shelter after dark to work the river bed.
Mating
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is a spiny eel and, like all Mastacembelidae, a substrate egg-scatterer that does not undertake the oceanic spawning migration of the true eels (Anguillidae). It breeds in fresh water. Spawning in mastacembelids is generally thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels, warming temperatures and increased flow associated with the wet season — that prompt adults to move onto flooded margins or among aquatic vegetation.
No specific field observations of mating behaviour in M. cryptacanthus are recorded in the accessible literature. Based on the broader family pattern, courting pairs are assumed to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots or leaf litter, after which neither parent remains to tend the eggs or larvae.
Breeding
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is not recorded as having been bred in the home aquarium, and it is rarely encountered in the hobby at all. As a spiny eel (Mastacembelidae), it is an egg-scatterer: spawning adults scatter adhesive eggs among vegetation or substrate with no parental care, and the eggs and larvae are left to develop unaided. This is the standard mastacembelid mode, and it differs sharply from the breeding strategies of both the swamp eels (Synbranchidae, which include male bubble-nest guarders) and the true eels (Anguillidae, which are catadromous and cannot be bred in captivity).
For aquarists attempting to breed mastacembelids, the general approach involves large, mature, heavily planted or root-furnished tanks, simulated seasonal triggers through temperature or water-change manipulation, and provision of fine-leaved spawning media. Larvae are typically very small and require infusoria-sized first foods. Given that M. cryptacanthus remains rare in the hobby and its biology is poorly documented, captive breeding remains theoretical for this species.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is seldom offered in the aquarium trade and is not a mainstream hobbyist fish. When it does appear it should be housed in a mature, well-filtered freshwater aquarium with a deep bed of fine sand into which it can burrow — this is not optional behaviour but a natural and stress-reducing necessity. The tank must be furnished with caves, pipe sections and shaded retreats that the fish can occupy during daylight hours, when it will largely remain hidden.
Like all spiny eels, M. cryptacanthus is scaleless and highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality; a stable, established filtration system and conservative treatment choices are essential. It is also an accomplished escape artist: mastacembelids climb, squeeze through tiny gaps and breathe air at the surface, and any opening in an aquarium lid — however small — is a potential exit route. A fully sealed, tight-fitting cover is non-negotiable. Tankmates should be peaceful and too large to be swallowed; the fish will prey on small companions at night. It feeds best on meaty foods offered after lights out.
Conservation
Mastacembelus cryptacanthus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The species has a reasonably broad coastal West and Central African distribution across the Ouémé, Niger coastal drainages, Lake Chad basin and Ntem, and no documented evidence of population-level decline has been established sufficient to qualify it for a threatened category.
Nevertheless, the lowland river systems it inhabits face ongoing pressure from agricultural and urban expansion, deforestation in the Guinea-Congo forest zone, dam construction and water extraction. The Lake Chad basin component of the species' range is under particular stress from hydrological changes and increasing human use. As a demersal species of soft-bottomed rivers with a relatively modest adult size, it may be locally harvested alongside other fish, though it does not appear to be a significant food or ornamental trade item. Continued monitoring of its status across the range would be appropriate given the scale of habitat change in the region.
