Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus kakrimensis was described by Emmanuel Vreven and Guy Teugels in 2005, in a paper that also redescribed the related West African species Mastacembelus liberiensis Boulenger, 1898. The new species was distinguished from its congeners by a combination of meristic characters: 29–30 pre-dorsal spines, 75–85 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines, 76–86 anal soft rays, 90–93 vertebrae, and a distinctively blunted snout profile. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes.
Placement in Synbranchiformes is the taxonomic key to understanding the fish. The spiny eels are not true eels; the true eels are the order Anguilliformes, and the two groups share only an elongate body plan evolved independently for burrowing. African Mastacembelus have a complex history: many species were at various times placed in segregate genera such as Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus, but modern treatments place all West African spiny eels in Mastacembelus, where M. kakrimensis sits without recorded synonym. The species epithet refers to the Kakrima River, the type locality and the primary known drainage for the species.
Morphology
Mastacembelus kakrimensis is a small to moderately sized spiny eel, recorded to a maximum of 9.5 in standard length. The body is greatly elongate and scaleless to casual inspection, covered in embedded scales and mucus in the manner of the family. The snout is blunted — a diagnostic character noted in the original description — in contrast to the more pointed or proboscis-like snout seen in larger Asian relatives. Pre-dorsal spines number 29–30, and the dorsal soft-ray count of 75–85 combined with 76–86 anal soft rays gives a relatively long-finned profile; the dorsal and anal fins run continuously to the tail.
As in all Mastacembelidae, the body is scaleless in the conventional sense, and the mucus coat is both a defense and a vulnerability — it carries no protective scales against copper or harsh medications. No formal description of colouration beyond the type specimen's preserved state is available in the public record; the blunted snout suggests a benthic probing lifestyle similar to related small African spiny eels.
Habitat
The type locality is the Kakrima River within the Konkoure River basin of Guinea, West Africa. The Konkoure is a mid-sized coastal river flowing from the Fouta Djallon highlands to the Atlantic, and its tributaries drain a mosaic of Guinea savanna and gallery forest. Waters in this system are typically warm, soft and mildly acidic to near-neutral, draining iron-rich laterite soils — the warm-lowland freshwater conditions characteristic of West African coastal drainages.
As a benthopelagic species (the FishBase habitat designation), M. kakrimensis likely inhabits the river bed itself, burrowing into soft sediments or sheltering among submerged roots and leaf litter as other small Mastacembelus do. Data on precise temperature, pH or hardness at the type locality are not available in the public literature; the warm, seasonally flooding West African river environment is the best framing the record supports.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Mastacembelus kakrimensis has been published. By analogy with its congeners and the feeding apparatus it shares with them — an elongate snout suited to probing the substrate — it is almost certainly a benthic invertivore, hunting worms, insect larvae and small crustaceans from soft sediment and among submerged debris after dark.
In captivity, small spiny eels of this size class generally accept live and frozen bloodworm, small earthworm sections, and small crustacean-based frozen foods offered at night. Given that the species remains rare in the aquarium trade and has never been the subject of targeted care documentation, these recommendations are extrapolated from the wider genus rather than direct observation.
Mating
Mastacembelus kakrimensis is a spiny eel and, like all Mastacembelidae, is an egg-scattering freshwater spawner — not a true eel, and not catadromous. It does not undertake the oceanic spawning migration of the Anguilla eels; it breeds in fresh water, as do all members of its family. No courtship observation specific to this species has been documented, and it has not been bred in captivity.
By inference from the family's pattern, a ripe pair would be expected to court and entwine in the shallows among vegetation or fine roots, with adhesive eggs scattered in the vegetation without a nest being formed and without any subsequent pair bond or parental attention. Spawning in West African river species is typically triggered by the onset of the wet season, when rising water levels and temperature changes signal breeding conditions.
Breeding
There are no published accounts of Mastacembelus kakrimensis being spawned in the aquarium. The species was described only in 2005, remains a single-basin endemic with limited trade presence, and is the sort of data-sparse recent description that rarely reaches specialist breeders. In the wider genus, spiny eel reproduction follows the egg-scatterer pattern: adhesive eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants or root masses in fresh water, no nest is built, the adults provide no parental care, and the eggs hatch in a few days at warm temperatures.
For any small West African Mastacembelus that did find its way into specialist hands, the approach taken with other spiny eels — large, soft-substrate aquarium, mature water, a simulated wet-season water change with slightly cooler, softer water — would be the starting point. Until breeding is confirmed, the species should be considered unspawned in captivity.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus kakrimensis is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and would not be expected to appear on availability lists in normal circumstances. Its small size — under 9.5 in — makes it more manageable than the large Asian spiny eels, but all spiny eels share the same fundamental care requirements that must be met before any other consideration: a soft sand substrate deep enough to burrow into, caves and dim hiding places, and above all a sealed, escape-proof aquarium. Spiny eels are legendary escape artists that can squeeze through any gap, climb airline tubes, and are routinely found dry on the floor.
Like all Mastacembelidae the species is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and organophosphate treatments — standard dip-and-dose approaches used for other fish can be lethal. Water quality must be stable and filtration mature. If ever encountered, it would suit a West African biotope setup with soft, slightly acidic, warm water, smooth substrate, and nocturnal feeding of bloodworm and small invertebrate foods.
Conservation
Mastacembelus kakrimensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. It was described in 2005 and remains known only from the Kakrima River in the Konkoure basin, Guinea — a distribution narrow enough to warrant attention. Single-basin endemic freshwater fishes in West Africa face the same constellation of pressures bearing down across the region: artisanal fishing, agricultural runoff, expanding human populations in the catchment, and the ongoing expansion of hydropower across Guinea's rivers.
The Konkoure basin is one of the most heavily hydropower-developed river systems in Guinea, and the interaction of dam construction, altered flow regimes, and sedimentation with a small, range-restricted benthic fish like M. kakrimensis is unknown but potentially significant. Data on current population status, precise distribution within the basin, and life-history parameters are all lacking. A data-deficient or near-threatened designation would not be surprising were a formal assessment carried out. For now the species sits in an uncomfortable gap: recently named, scientifically underrepresented, and living in a watershed under active development pressure.
