Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus liberiensis was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898 from material collected in Liberia, giving the species both its authority and its epithet. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences — the authority for valid names) places it in Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the key fact about the animal: it is an "eel" by shape and common parlance, not by relationship. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes; the Mastacembelidae are not closely related to them, and their elongate form is convergent.
A 2005 redescription by Vreven and Teugels published in the Journal of Fish Biology established the synonymy of two former species with M. liberiensis: Mastacembelus reticulatus Boulenger, 1911 and Mastacembelus laticauda Ahl, 1937 are both treated as junior synonyms. The same paper described a new species from the Konkoré basin of Guinea that had previously been confused with M. liberiensis, refining the range of the true species. GBIF (taxon ID 2351856) confirms the valid name and authority as Boulenger, 1898.
African spiny eels were historically assigned to satellite genera such as Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus, but modern treatments return them to Mastacembelus. Mastacembelus liberiensis has always sat within the main genus and was not part of that taxonomic shuffling.
Morphology
Mastacembelus liberiensis reaches a maximum recorded total length of around 14.5–15 in, making it a mid-sized spiny eel — larger than the miniature African species but well short of the giant Asian fire eel or tire-track eel. The body is greatly elongate, laterally compressed toward the tail, and effectively scaleless in appearance; the skin is covered in small embedded scales beneath a coat of protective mucus. A fleshy, mobile rostral proboscis extends the snout and is lined with tubular nostrils used to probe the substrate for prey, a diagnostic feature of the family.
Along the back, a row of short isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the continuous soft dorsal fin, which merges with the anal fin around the pointed tail — the characteristic spiny-eel body plan. FishBase records 28–35 dorsal spines, 82–101 dorsal soft rays, 79–100 anal soft rays, and 92–105 vertebrae. The species earns its trade name "orange spot eel" from the pattern of orange to reddish-orange spots and reticulations along the flanks, set against a darker ground colour of brown to olive-grey. Sexual dimorphism is minimal; ripe females become noticeably fuller-bodied.
Habitat
Mastacembelus liberiensis is a freshwater fish of tropical West Africa, inhabiting the rivers and streams of the coastal and sub-coastal lowlands from the Gambia basin southward through Sierra Leone and Liberia to the Cess and Nipoué basins, and inland into the Konkoré basin of Guinea. It is a benthopelagic species associated with soft-bottomed rivers, streams, swamps and flooded margins — environments of warm, slow to moderate current where it can bury itself in sand or mud by day and forage by night.
The water across its range is characteristically warm, soft to slightly acidic or neutral, and low in dissolved minerals — the typical lowland West African freshwater chemistry. FishBase assigns it to the tropical temperature range; the Aquatropics guide for Mastacembelus species suggests 75–82 °F as a working target for the genus. Like other spiny eels it is most active after dark, emerging from the substrate or from tangles of roots and leaf litter to hunt invertebrates on and in the bottom.
Feeding
Mastacembelus liberiensis is a benthic carnivore. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.8, consistent with predation on invertebrates and small prey items rather than strict piscivory. In the wild it probes sandy and muddy substrates and organic debris with its sensitive rostral proboscis, locating insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates that live at or within the bottom.
In the aquarium it is reported to be a slow, deliberate feeder that can be out-competed by faster or more aggressive tankmates. Earthworms, bloodworm (frozen or live), chopped prawn, and similar meaty foods work well, ideally offered after lights-out when the eel is most active and confident. Hobbyist accounts note that newly imported fish may be shy feeders initially; feeding in dim or dark conditions helps them settle. Some individuals eventually accept sinking pellets once established.
Mating
As a spiny eel of the family Mastacembelidae, Mastacembelus liberiensis is an egg-scattering spawner that breeds in fresh water and provides no parental care. It is not a true eel and undertakes no catadromous migration; reproduction takes place entirely within the river systems of West Africa. Spawning in Mastacembelus is typically associated with the seasonal flood pulse — rising water levels and warming temperatures at the onset of the rainy season appear to trigger reproductive behaviour, with adults moving onto flooded margins rich in aquatic vegetation and organic debris.
Dedicated breeding observations for M. liberiensis specifically are absent from the published literature. What is known is extrapolated from the broader genus: courting pairs entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine plants, roots, and leaf litter, with no nest construction and no ongoing association between the adults after spawning. The eggs are left to hatch and the larvae to fend for themselves.
Breeding
Mastacembelus liberiensis is rarely if ever bred in the home aquarium, a situation common to most spiny eels. No parental care is involved: adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine vegetation or organic substrate debris and then depart, leaving eggs and subsequent larvae entirely unattended. FishBase records no maturity data and no captive-breeding information for this species, and the broader Mastacembelidae literature confirms that captive spawnings of African spiny eels are uncommon events.
Where spawnings of Mastacembelus species have been documented by hobbyists, they have typically followed a simulated seasonal trigger — a large water change with slightly cooler, softer water mimicking the onset of the rains — and a well-conditioned, compatible pair. Larvae are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or other near-microscopic first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The difficulty of achieving and rearing such spawnings means that virtually all M. liberiensis in the trade are wild-collected.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus liberiensis is described by hobbyist importers as a hardy, adaptable West African spiny eel that is more forgiving of aquarium conditions than some of the larger Asian species. It is nonetheless a specialist keeping proposition. Its natural inclination is to burrow, so a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate deep enough for the fish to submerge itself completely is essential, along with caves, driftwood, and other cover that allow it to rest concealed. The tank must be warm — around 75–82 °F — and maintained with stable, clean water; like all Mastacembelidae it is scaleless and therefore acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality.
A secure, tightly fitting lid with no gaps is non-negotiable. Spiny eels are accomplished escape artists: they climb, squeeze through the smallest openings, and are strong enough to dislodge loose covers. A fish found on the floor is almost always a dead fish. Hobbyist sources emphasise that M. liberiensis is a slow, deliberate feeder that is easily out-competed by faster or more aggressive tankmates; it does best with peaceful, similarly sized companions that will not harass it at mealtimes or outcompete it for food. Provided with sand, cover, and evening feeds of meaty foods, it is an engaging and long-lived aquarium resident.
Conservation
Mastacembelus liberiensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment). The species has a reasonably broad West African distribution spanning multiple river basins from the Gambia to the Konkoré, and no evidence of a range-wide population decline has been identified. Its occurrence across several relatively intact coastal drainages provides resilience against localised impacts.
Nonetheless, the rivers of West Africa face mounting pressure from deforestation and catchment degradation, artisanal and commercial fishing, and the effects of agricultural runoff. The Liberian and Sierra Leonean drainages that form the core of the species' range have experienced significant habitat disturbance over recent decades. While the current assessment is reassuring, narrow-range relatives in the region have fared less well, and ongoing monitoring of freshwater biodiversity in this area remains important. The 2005 redescription by Vreven and Teugels, which resolved the species' identity and range, was itself a prerequisite for accurate conservation assessment.
