Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus malabaricus was described by Thomas Claverhill Jerdon in 1849, with the type locality given as Malabar — the Malabar Coast of present-day Kerala, India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. It is not a true eel: the true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes, and the resemblance between the two groups is a case of convergent evolution in elongate, burrowing fishes. The spiny eels are more closely related to the swamp eels (family Synbranchidae) than to any anguilliform.
The species has also appeared in the literature under the combination Macrognathus malabaricus (Jerdon, 1849) — Macrognathus being a related genus of Asian spiny eels in the family Mastacembelidae. Its placement in Mastacembelus rather than Macrognathus is supported by meristic characters: it bears some 39–40 isolated dorsal spines, which aligns it with the Mastacembelus alliance rather than the fewer-spined Macrognathus. Following a gap of approximately 150 years in which the species was poorly documented, a 2013 study by Bhatt et al. published in the International Science Congress Association journal formally rediscovered it from the Mananthavady River, Wayanad, Kerala, and provided fresh meristic and morphometric data confirming it as a valid and distinct species.
Morphology
Mastacembelus malabaricus is a medium-to-large spiny eel reaching roughly 23.5–30 in in total length, at least in captivity; wild maximum size is not thoroughly documented. The body is greatly elongate and tapers toward the rear, scaleless to the naked eye and covered in a layer of fine embedded scales and mucus. The snout is drawn into a fleshy, mobile proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils — a sensory structure used to probe soft substrate for prey. Along the dorsal surface, a row of short, isolated dorsal spines (approximately 39–40) precede the continuous soft dorsal fin that merges with the anal fin around the tail.
The most distinctive external character noted in the rediscovery study is the pattern of approximately 11 X-shaped or cross-shaped marks arranged along the mid-lateral surface of the body. This marking pattern, together with the relatively shorter head, shorter dorsal fin depth, longer dorsal fin base, and reduced pre-dorsal and pre-anal lengths, separates it from the closely related M. armatus (the tire-track or zigzag eel), with which it has historically been confused. Sexes are externally similar; ripe females may show a fuller abdomen when gravid.
Habitat
Mastacembelus malabaricus is a Western Ghats endemic, native to rivers and streams of Kerala in southwestern India. The Mananthavady River in Wayanad district — part of the Kabani River system — is documented as part of its range, and the original 1849 type locality points broadly to the Malabar Coast drainages. It inhabits fresh water; there is no evidence that it enters brackish or marine environments.
Related Asian Mastacembelus species — including the similar M. armatus — occupy highland streams, lowland rivers, floodplains, coastal marshes and bodies with sandy or rocky beds and heavy aquatic vegetation, often moving onto seasonally flooded margins during the rains. Water conditions in Kerala's Western Ghats rivers are typically warm, soft to moderately hard, and close to neutral in pH. Aquarium guidance for the species suggests temperatures of 75–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5, consistent with the natural conditions of the region's forested catchments. Like other spiny eels, it is a burrower that shelters in soft substrate and among submerged roots and leaf litter by day.
Feeding
Mastacembelus malabaricus is a carnivore. The elongate body and probing fleshy snout are the hallmarks of a benthic hunter that roots through soft sediment, leaf litter and crevices for invertebrate prey — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar benthic organisms form the diet of closely related species, and the same is expected of this species given its morphology and habitat.
In the aquarium, care notes indicate it accepts earthworms, bloodworms, shrimp, chopped prawns and krill, and that it rarely takes dry food — the common experience with spiny eels, which generally prefer live or frozen meaty offerings over prepared diets. Feeding after lights-out accommodates its nocturnal habits and reduces competition with diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Mastacembelus malabaricus is a spiny eel and, as such, an egg-scattering spawner in fresh water. It is not a true eel and does not perform the catadromous spawning migration of Anguilla; it breeds entirely in rivers and streams. Spawning in closely related Mastacembelus species is typically triggered by the rains — a rise in water level, a drop in temperature with cooler rain water, and an increase in current mimic the onset of monsoon flooding and are the environmental cues that drive courtship.
In related Asian spiny eels, courtship involves the pair circling and entwining among aquatic vegetation or roots before the female scatters adhesive eggs. No nest is built and no parental bond forms beyond the spawning act; the adults take no interest in the eggs once they are laid. Breeding observations specific to M. malabaricus are not documented in the available literature, but its Mastacembelidae membership makes the egg-scattering, non-caring mode highly certain.
Breeding
Mastacembelus malabaricus is rarely if ever bred in the home aquarium. It is a recently rediscovered endemic with a narrow range; almost no captive-breeding data exist for the species specifically. By analogy with the wider Mastacembelus group, spawning would be expected to follow a large water change with cooler, softer water to simulate monsoon onset, with the pair depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots or soft substrate debris. No parental care is given; after spawning, adults should be separated from the eggs.
The eggs of related spiny eels hatch within a few days at warm temperatures, and the larvae require very small first foods — infusoria-scale organisms before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The difficulty of obtaining a compatible, conditioned pair, the need for a spacious and appropriately set-up breeding tank, and the rarity of the species in the hobby all make captive breeding an exceptional rather than routine event.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus malabaricus is an uncommon species in the hobby, occasionally marketed — sometimes as a newly described tire-track variant — to keepers interested in large Asian spiny eels. Care parallels that of the related M. armatus and M. erythrotaenia: it requires a spacious aquarium of at least 130 US gal given its adult size of 23.5–30 in, with a deep bed of fine sand for burrowing, numerous caves, driftwood and PVC tubes as daytime retreats, and a tight-fitting, fully sealed lid. Spiny eels are notorious escape artists, able to climb, squeeze through the smallest gaps and survive out of water briefly; an open tank is a death sentence.
Like all mastacembelids, M. malabaricus is scaleless and exceptionally sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality. Only mature, well-filtered aquaria with stable chemistry should be used. Temperature 75–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5 with soft to moderately hard water suits it. It is a nocturnal predator and will consume small fish and invertebrates after dark, so tankmates should be robust and too large to be swallowed. It is generally tolerant of other large peaceful fish and does not show the territoriality toward its own species that some large cichlids do, but tank size must be adequate if it is to be housed with conspecifics.
Conservation
Mastacembelus malabaricus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is considered Not Evaluated (NE). This is not reassuring: the species is a narrow endemic of Kerala's Western Ghats waterways, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot under severe and ongoing pressure from deforestation, agriculture, river modification, water extraction and pollution. Its apparent disappearance from the scientific record for roughly 150 years between Jerdon's 1849 description and the 2013 rediscovery from the Mananthavady River suggests either that the species is genuinely rare and localised, or that it had been overlooked or confused with related species — either way, it is not a widely abundant fish.
The Western Ghats are recognised as one of the world's eight hottest hotspots for biodiversity, and their freshwater fishes are disproportionately threatened. Many endemic species have restricted ranges confined to single river basins or sub-basins and face direct habitat loss as forest cover is reduced and rivers are diverted or degraded. A formal IUCN assessment of M. malabaricus, with survey data to underpin a range and population estimate, would be a valuable contribution to conservation planning for the region.
