Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus notophthalmus was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1989. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) records it in the genus Mastacembelus within the family Mastacembelidae and the order Synbranchiformes. The order Synbranchiformes encompasses both the spiny eels and the swamp eels; it is entirely distinct from the true eels of the order Anguilliformes, so the eel-like body of Mastacembelus is a case of convergent evolution on a burrowing, elongate lifestyle rather than a sign of close kinship with marine eels.
The genus Mastacembelus spans both Asia and Africa. Its African members were historically parcelled out into separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus — before being synonymised back into Mastacembelus by contemporary revisions. The Asian Mastacembelus, including M. notophthalmus, were never subject to this particular reorganisation and have remained in the genus since Roberts' original description. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised for this species.
The epithet notophthalmus is formed from the Greek notos (back, southern) and ophthalmos (eye); the precise allusion Roberts intended is not spelled out in the accessible literature, but it likely refers to a colour marking near the dorsal surface of the head.
Morphology
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is a moderately sized spiny eel, reaching a recorded maximum of 15.5 in standard length. The body is greatly elongate and cylindrical to slightly compressed posteriorly, covered in tiny embedded scales almost invisible to the naked eye and coated in a layer of mucus that gives the skin a smooth, slick appearance. The snout is extended into the fleshy, probing rostral tube characteristic of Mastacembelus, furnished with tubular anterior nostrils used to investigate the substrate for buried prey. Along the dorsal profile ahead of the soft dorsal fin runs a series of short, isolated dorsal spines — the diagnostic feature of the family and the source of the "spiny eel" name.
The colouration is predominantly dark — deep brown to near-black across the body — with a pattern of lighter markings or ocelli (eye-spots) that varies individually and is likely responsible for both the specific name and the trade name "black pearl." The soft dorsal, caudal and anal fins are continuous around the tapering tail in the fashion common to the family. Reliable external sexing criteria have not been published for this species; females of related mastacembelids become notably fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is a freshwater species of the Sundaic lowlands, known from Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is a demersal fish — one that lives on and in the bottom — inhabiting slow to moderately flowing rivers, streams, and associated floodplain habitats of the humid tropical lowlands. Like other Southeast Asian spiny eels it is a burrower, spending daylight hours concealed in soft substrate, leaf litter, submerged roots, or crevices and emerging after dark to forage.
Hobby sources record it at a pH of 6.8–7.6 and temperatures of 75–82 °F (76–82 °F), parameters consistent with the warm, soft to slightly hard fresh waters typical of Sundaic lowland rivers. The scaleless body and the family's known sensitivity to copper-based treatments and abrupt water-quality shifts suggest it requires stable, well-oxygenated, unpolluted conditions. Formal scientific habitat data for this species are limited; the IUCN assessment notes that geographic distribution and population data remain sparse.
Feeding
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is a nocturnal predator that uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate food buried in or concealed near the substrate. In the wild it is presumed to feed on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar bottom-dwelling prey — consistent with the feeding ecology of related mastacembelids sharing the same Sundaic rivers.
In the aquarium it should be offered meaty foods in the evening when it becomes active: earthworms, bloodworm (frozen or live), small pieces of prawn, and similar invertebrate-based foods are appropriate. Many spiny eels in this size class will eventually learn to take quality sinking pellets once settled and confident, but live or frozen foods are the best route for newly imported individuals that may be reluctant to feed under bright conditions or during the day.
Mating
No specific field or captive observations of mating behaviour in Mastacembelus notophthalmus have been published. By analogy with the family biology of the Mastacembelidae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering spawner with no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself. Related spiny eels from Southeast Asia are thought to be triggered into reproductive condition by the onset of the wet season — rising water levels, softening and slightly cooling rainfall, and the availability of flooded marginal vegetation that serves as spawning substrate.
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine spawning migration; it breeds entirely in fresh water. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding in spiny eels — these modes belong to the swamp eels and cichlids respectively.
Breeding
Breeding of Mastacembelus notophthalmus in the home aquarium has not been documented in the accessible literature, and the species is sufficiently data-sparse that even farm or institutional spawning records are absent. The general pattern for Asian Mastacembelus, where captive spawnings have been observed, involves a pair scattering small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots or leaf litter after an extended courtship; the eggs are then left entirely unattended.
Based on this family model, facts.breeding.parentalCare is none — there is no guarding, fanning or tending of eggs or larvae by either parent. Successful rearing in captivity requires extremely fine first foods for the newly hatched larvae. The absence of captive breeding records for this species is not unusual; most mid-sized Sundaic mastacembelids are collected as wild fish and the precise hormonal and environmental cues needed to induce spawning in a domestic aquarium remain poorly understood.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is an attractive and relatively compact spiny eel that suits a dedicated Southeast Asian biotope aquarium. At a maximum of around 15.5 in it is more manageable than the giant spiny eels, but it still requires a tank of at least 39.5–47 in in length furnished with a deep bed of soft sand into which it can bury itself, a selection of caves, driftwood, PVC pipes or other shaded retreats, and subdued lighting. Floating plants or a dense canopy help replicate the dim conditions of its native forest rivers and encourage it to emerge during the day.
As with all mastacembelids, escape prevention is essential: this fish will find and exploit any gap in an aquarium lid, breathe at the surface, and climb out of an open tank. A tight-fitting, fully sealed cover is non-negotiable. The scaleless body is sensitive to copper-based medications and to salt; many standard disease treatments harm or kill spiny eels at doses safe for scaled fish, so alternative treatments and scrupulous prevention are preferable to cure. It coexists well with peaceful mid- to upper-water species too large to be swallowed, and is generally not aggressive toward tankmates of similar size, though competition for hiding spots with other bottom-dwellers should be monitored.
Conservation
Mastacembelus notophthalmus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in August 2019. The assessors noted that data on the species' geographic distribution and population size are scarce — very few specimens have been formally examined — but there is no evidence of a significant range-wide decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category at present.
The species is native to the lowland fresh waters of Malaysia and Sumatra, a region subject to rapid and ongoing habitat change: extensive deforestation, conversion of river catchments to oil palm and pulp plantations, peat drainage, and associated water-quality degradation are widespread pressures across Sundaland. Narrow-range or data-deficient freshwater fish in this region can shift conservation status quickly as surveys improve. The Least Concern assessment should be read in the context of genuinely limited data rather than as evidence of robust populations, and the species warrants continued monitoring as Sundaic freshwater biodiversity inventories improve.
