Mastacembelus shiloangoensis is a small, poorly-known spiny eel endemic to the Shiloango River drainage on the border of Gabon and the Republic of Congo in west-central Africa. Despite its serpentine shape and common trade grouping, it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels, within the order Synbranchiformes — kin to the swamp eels rather than to the marine and catadromous Anguillidae. Described from a narrow river basin only in 2004, it remains among the least-studied members of its genus, rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and unevaluated by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis was described by Emmanuel Vreven in 2004 as part of a revision of African spiny eels. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, within the family Mastacembelidae and the order Synbranchiformes. This taxonomic position matters for understanding the fish correctly: it is not a true eel. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes, a wholly separate lineage; the spiny eels evolved their elongate, sinuous body plan independently, and the resemblance is one of convergence on a burrowing, benthic way of life.

The African members of Mastacembelus were for many decades distributed among segregate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus among them — based chiefly on the presence or absence of eyes and on premaxillary dentition. More recent systematic work has folded most of these back into Mastacembelus, and Vreven's 2004 description of M. shiloangoensis was placed directly in the broadened genus. Any older combination under an alternative genus name should be treated as a synonym. The species epithet shiloangoensis is a toponym referring to the Shiloango River, the type locality from which the species was collected.

Morphology

Like all Mastacembelus, M. shiloangoensis has the characteristic spiny-eel body plan: greatly elongate and somewhat laterally compressed, scaleless in appearance (the tiny embedded scales are barely visible), and covered in a coat of protective mucus. The snout is extended into a fleshy, flexible proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils that the fish uses to probe the substrate for prey. A row of short, stiff dorsal spines runs along the back ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which is continuous with the anal fin around the tapering tail — the "spiny" of spiny eel.

Detailed morphometric data for M. shiloangoensis are limited in the available literature. Based on its closest relatives in the west-central African Mastacembelus fauna, it is likely a modestly sized species reaching perhaps 8–12 in total length, though exact maximum size data for this species are sparse and should not be assumed from larger or better-known congeners. Colouration is presumed to follow the typical pattern of African Mastacembelus: brownish to olive or greyish ground with darker mottling or banding, but species-specific colour notes are not confirmed in accessible sources.

Habitat

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis is endemic to the Shiloango River drainage, a relatively small river system draining the uplands of west-central Africa and entering the Atlantic south of the Congo River mouth, along the border between Gabon and the Republic of Congo. The Shiloango catchment is characterised by lowland rainforest streams and rivers with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, typical of the Atlantic-slope drainages of this region.

Like the majority of African forest-stream Mastacembelus, this species almost certainly inhabits shallow to moderate-depth sections of clear or lightly-tinted rivers and streams, over substrates of sand, gravel, and leaf litter, amid submerged roots and marginal vegetation where it can find cover. Specific temperature and chemistry data from field collections are not published in accessible form; values typical of equatorial Atlantic-slope drainages in this part of Africa suggest warm water (roughly 73–81 °F) with soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions. These parameters should be regarded as informed inferences rather than confirmed measurements.

Feeding

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis is presumed to be a benthic invertebrate predator in the manner of all Mastacembelus. The probing, tubular-nostrilled snout and the elongate, sinuous body are adaptations for working through substrate, leaf litter, and root tangles in search of prey — chiefly aquatic insect larvae, small worms, and other benthic invertebrates. It is a nocturnal hunter by nature, sheltering in burrows or beneath debris by day and emerging in low light to forage.

No dedicated feeding study exists for this species specifically. In aquarium conditions, where this fish is very rarely kept, it would be expected to respond to the standard spiny-eel diet of live and frozen bloodworm, tubifex, earthworm sections, and small soft invertebrates offered after lights-out. Given its small size relative to the largest Mastacembelus, it would not be expected to take fish prey except possibly very small fry.

Mating

No field or captive observations of mating behaviour have been published for Mastacembelus shiloangoensis. Based on the well-documented reproductive biology of the family Mastacembelidae, it is a substrate egg-scatterer that breeds in fresh water. It is emphatically not catadromous and does not undertake the ocean-going spawning migration characteristic of true eels (Anguilla). Mating is expected to be triggered by seasonal cues — the onset of rains, rising water levels, or temperature shifts — consistent with the breeding seasonality observed in other African Mastacembelus.

A courting pair would be expected to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, or leaf litter, following the pattern typical of the genus. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the spawning event, and no parental investment in eggs or larvae. All of this is inferred from congeners; no direct observation of M. shiloangoensis mating is available in the literature.

Breeding

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis is not known to have been bred in captivity. It is extremely rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and its breeding biology is entirely unrecorded from either field or aquarium observation. The reproductive mode can be inferred with confidence from the family: it is an egg-scatterer, depositing adhesive eggs in fresh water among vegetation or substrate debris, with no parental care provided by either sex after spawning. The eggs and larvae are abandoned and the adults play no further role in their development.

For the rare keeper who obtains this species, successful spawning, if it occurred, would likely require a large, well-planted aquarium with soft substrate, water conditions mimicking the Shiloango's soft, warm chemistry, and seasonal conditioning with food variety and water-change cycles to simulate the rainy-season trigger. The very limited trade availability and complete absence of breeding records mean that captive reproduction remains entirely theoretical for this species.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis is virtually absent from the international aquarium trade and will not be found in most shops. As a narrow endemic from a single river drainage with no commercial aquaculture, it would reach hobbyists only through specialist importers supplying enthusiasts of west-central African river fish. For any keeper who does obtain a specimen, the requirements follow those of west-central African Mastacembelus generally: a well-covered aquarium with a deep soft-sand substrate for burrowing, caves and root tangles for daytime shelter, dim lighting or low-light planting, and meaty foods offered after lights-out.

Like all spiny eels, M. shiloangoensis is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality; these fish are often the first fatalities when water conditions slide. The most critical hardware requirement is a completely sealed lid: spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that will climb filter tubes, squeeze through the smallest gaps, breathe air at the surface, and rapidly desiccate if they leave the tank. Tankmates should be peaceful and not significantly smaller than the eel itself, as any small invertebrate or tiny fish is potential food. Given its rarity and narrow range, wild-caught specimens should be treated with particular care.

Conservation

Mastacembelus shiloangoensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Described only in 2004 and endemic to the Shiloango River drainage — a limited watershed on the Gabon–Republic of Congo border — it falls into the large category of recently described, range-restricted African freshwater fish for which no formal conservation evaluation has yet been conducted. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE), which should not be mistaken for security.

The Shiloango basin lies within the broader Congo Basin forest zone, a region under increasing pressure from logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development. Narrow-range river endemics are inherently vulnerable to any habitat degradation within their sole drainage, and a species known from a single river system has no geographic refuge if that system is compromised. Without a current population assessment, the degree of threat is unknown, but the combination of very limited range, recent description, and habitat pressure in the region warrants attention. Collection for the aquarium trade is unlikely to be a significant pressure given how rarely this fish appears in commerce.
