Mastacembelus shiranus, the Malawi spiny eel, is a moderately sized spiny eel endemic to Lake Malawi and the lower reaches of the rivers that drain into it — one of the only spiny eels to have colonised the alkaline, hard, oxygen-rich waters of the African Great Rift lakes. Despite its sinuous, elongate body and burrowing habits, it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes, kin to the swamp eels rather than to the catadromous marine eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its eel-like shape is a convergence, suited to life over the rocky and sandy shallows of one of Africa's most celebrated inland seas.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus shiranus was described by the British zoologist Albert Günther in 1896, based on material from the Shire River — the outlet of Lake Malawi — from which the epithet shiranus is derived. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. This is the crucial point for understanding the fish: it is not a true eel. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels of Mastacembelidae are not closely related to them, and the eel-like body is an independent evolutionary solution to burrowing along the substrate.

The genus Mastacembelus is large and spans tropical Africa and Asia. Its African members were historically assigned to separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus — before most were folded back into Mastacembelus. Mastacembelus shiranus belongs to the African radiation and is part of a small group of Mastacembelus species associated with the East African rift lakes and their drainages. The species epithet commemorates the Shire River, the southern outlet of Lake Malawi and the type locality.

Morphology

Mastacembelus shiranus is a medium-sized spiny eel reaching a maximum recorded length of about 10 in total length. The body is greatly elongate and strongly resembles a true eel, though it is unrelated to them: the body is scaleless to the eye, coated in mucus, and tapers toward a pointed tail where the dorsal and anal fins merge. The snout is drawn out into a fleshy, tube-like rostral extension with tubular nostrils, used to probe rocky crevices and sandy substrate for prey — a hallmark of the spiny eels.

Along the dorsum runs a series of short, isolated spines — the defining character of the family — ahead of the soft dorsal fin. Colouration is typically brownish to olive, often with mottled or banded patterning that provides camouflage over the rocky and sandy bottoms of Lake Malawi. Distinguishing the sexes externally is difficult; ripe females may appear slightly fuller in the body. At 10 in maximum, M. shiranus is considerably smaller than the large Asian spiny eels of the hobby and more suited to modest tank sizes.

Habitat

Mastacembelus shiranus is endemic to Lake Malawi and the lower courses of its tributary rivers, including the Shire River. Lake Malawi is an African Great Rift Valley lake: its waters are warm, highly oxygenated, hard, and distinctly alkaline, with a pH of 7.4–8.4, total hardness of approximately 7–30 dH, and water temperatures of 73–81 °F. This is the opposite of the soft, acidic lowland-river water associated with many Asian spiny eels; M. shiranus requires rift-lake chemistry.

Within the lake the species is found in shallow water — both the rocky areas associated with cichlid diversity and the sandy bottoms that most spiny eels prefer for burrowing. It is a benthopelagic species, living and feeding close to the substrate. Its tolerance of the rocky habitat alongside the sandy is consistent with a species that uses rocky crevices as shelter and retreat zones as well as open sand for burrowing.

Feeding

Like all spiny eels, Mastacembelus shiranus is a carnivore that forages along the substrate, using its sensitive, probing snout to locate hidden prey. In Lake Malawi its diet consists of benthic invertebrates and small fishes — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and similar soft-bodied prey that it roots from sandy and rocky substrate.

In the aquarium, it accepts meaty foods: bloodworm, earthworms, and other live or frozen invertebrates are well-received, and some individuals can be trained to take sinking pellets. Like most spiny eels it is a nocturnal or crepuscular forager that may initially refuse food in bright light or while observed; offering food after lights-out usually encourages a shy fish to begin feeding confidently.

Mating

Mastacembelus shiranus is a spiny eel and thus an egg-scatterer — it is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine spawning migration. Spawning in Mastacembelidae is triggered by seasonal cues, typically rising water levels, warming temperatures, or increased rainfall associated with the wet season. In Lake Malawi the seasonal temperature fluctuation and inflows from tributary rivers likely serve as the proximate cues.

A courting pair is thought to entwine and scatter adhesive eggs among vegetation, roots, or substrate crevices. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and no subsequent parental attention to the eggs or larvae. Detailed wild observations are limited by the fish's nocturnal and burrowing lifestyle, so much of what is inferred for this species draws from the general biology of the family.

Breeding

Mastacembelus shiranus is rarely bred in the home aquarium. Like other spiny eels, the challenges include the difficulty of sexing adults, the need for a conditioned pair, and the provision of suitable seasonal triggers — in this case the warm, alkaline rift-lake conditions of Lake Malawi rather than the soft-water monsoon cues of Asian spiny eels. A large, mature aquarium with stable rift-lake chemistry, fine substrate for burrowing, and adequate plant or root cover for egg deposition would be the starting point.

Where spawnings do occur in spiny eels of this group, adhesive eggs are scattered and hatch within a few days; the larvae are very small and require fine live foods initially. No parental care is given at any stage. Captive-bred stock is essentially unavailable in the trade, and the species is encountered almost exclusively as a wild-caught or locally collected fish.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus shiranus is an uncommon aquarium species but an appropriate one for the well-run Lake Malawi biotope or community tank. At a maximum of 10 in it is far more manageable than the large Asian spiny eels, and it fits comfortably alongside the cichlids and other Lake Malawi species it shares habitat with in the wild. A tank of at least 39.5–47 in with a bed of fine sand for burrowing, rock piles for shelter, and excellent filtration is suitable.

Crucially, the water must reflect rift-lake chemistry: alkaline pH (7.4–8.4), moderate to high hardness, and temperatures of 73–81 °F. Do not house it in the soft, acidic water appropriate for Asian spiny eels — it will not thrive there. Like all spiny eels it is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality; a mature, stable system is essential. It is also a confirmed escape artist: spiny eels probe and climb any gap in the lid, and a tight, fully sealed cover is mandatory. Feeding should be offered in the evening with meaty foods appropriate to a benthic carnivore.

Conservation

Mastacembelus shiranus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published in June 2018. The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and the lower Shire River — a comparatively restricted range — but no immediate conservation threats have been documented, and the lake and its immediate drainages retain generally good water quality relative to many other African lake systems.

That said, Lake Malawi faces growing pressures from artisanal fisheries, sedimentation from deforestation in the watershed, and localised pollution near lakeside settlements. The species' restriction to a single lake system means that any basin-wide degradation would affect the entire population. As a non-cichlid and a comparatively inconspicuous species, it receives little dedicated monitoring attention, and its population trend is presumed stable rather than positively confirmed.
