Mastacembelus taiaensis is a spiny eel described by Travers in 1992, native to river drainages in West or Central Africa. Despite the common grouping with "eels", it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes, more closely related to the swamp eels than to the marine and catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes — the elongate form is a case of convergent adaptation to a burrowing, benthic lifestyle. Published biological data for this species are sparse, and it remains little known in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus taiaensis was described by Travers in 1992. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the nominal genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. The family name and its relatives make clear that this is not a true eel: the Anguilliformes (true eels) are a separate and distant order, and the eel-like body of Mastacembelus is convergent on the same burrowing body plan rather than evidence of shared ancestry.

Many African members of the family were historically placed in segregate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, or Afromastacembelus — before these were largely folded back into Mastacembelus. Travers' 1992 original description may have used one of these alternate combinations; the current valid name as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes is Mastacembelus taiaensis. Data on the species remain sparse, and no subsequent revision is known to have altered its placement. The specific epithet almost certainly refers to its type locality in the Taia (or Taia-river) drainage, following the standard practice of naming newly described spiny eels after the river from which they were collected.

Were an aquarist ever to attempt breeding, the likely approach would follow what has succeeded with other modest-sized African spiny eels: a mature, heavily planted tank with a soft sand substrate, careful conditioning on live and frozen foods, and a simulated seasonal trigger — a series of cooler, softer water changes followed by a gradual warming — to prompt spawning. Eggs and larvae of spiny eels are small and demand fine food initially. No captive breeding account for this species is known to exist.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus taiaensis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in mainstream trade, and no care accounts have been published in hobby literature accessible for this entry. Spiny eels of this genus require a tank with a deep, soft sand substrate for burrowing, ample caves and submerged shelter for daytime retreat, gentle filtration, and subdued lighting. They are scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications — standard treatments for ich or other diseases that contain copper sulfate can be lethal — and they demand stable, clean water. Above all, a tight-fitting and fully sealed lid is essential: spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that will find and exploit any gap in tank coverings, breathe air at the surface, and die rapidly if they exit the water.
