Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus triolobus was described by Zhou and Yang in 2011, making it one of the more recently recognised members of the large and taxonomically active genus Mastacembelus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid fish names, places it in Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae. That family sits within the order Synbranchiformes, a grouping that includes the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) but has no close relationship to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The spiny eels' eel-like body is convergent — the result of independent adaptation to a burrowing, elongate way of life rather than shared ancestry with the marine Anguilla or their kin.
The African members of Mastacembelus have a complicated taxonomic history: many were formerly distributed among segregate genera including Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus and Afromastacembelus before subsequent revision folded them back into Mastacembelus. Zhou and Yang's 2011 description of M. triolobus established the species within the genus as currently defined. The species epithet triolobus refers to a morphological character of the type specimen; detailed morphological description is in the original 2011 publication, which is the primary authority for this taxon. Because the species is recent and narrowly documented, no common name had entered widespread use as of 2026.
African spiny eels span a vast range across West and Central African river systems, the Nile, the Zambezi, and the rift lakes, and the genus is one of the most speciose freshwater fish groups on the continent. M. triolobus's precise placement within that diversity — and its closest relatives — remains to be fully resolved through phylogenetic work.
Morphology
Like all members of Mastacembelus, M. triolobus is greatly elongated, with a body that tapers toward a pointed tail and a fleshy, trunk-like snout tipped with tubular nostrils — the hallmark of the spiny eels and the instrument they use to probe the substrate for food. The short, isolated dorsal spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin give the family its common name; the soft dorsal, caudal and anal fins are continuous around the tail as is typical in the genus.
Specific size records for M. triolobus are sparse given the limited documentation since its 2011 description. The species is an African Mastacembelus and consistent with a genus in which total lengths range from under 8 in in small endemics to over 27.5 in in larger riverine forms, but without confirmed size data the maximum length for this species cannot be stated with confidence. Like all spiny eels it lacks obvious scales to the eye, being covered instead in minute, deeply embedded scales beneath a layer of mucus, a feature that makes the group sensitive to copper-based treatments and to abrasive or salt-heavy conditions.
Habitat
Mastacembelus triolobus is an African freshwater species. Its precise native range is not fully established in accessible literature, and the 2011 description specifies the type locality from which the holotype was collected. African Mastacembelus in general inhabit a wide variety of freshwater environments — rivers, streams, swampy backwaters, floodplains and lake margins — typically over soft substrates of sand, mud or silt into which they burrow, often resting with only the head visible at the substrate surface.
Water conditions across the African Mastacembelus range widely: riverine lowland species typically occupy warm, soft-to-neutral water; rift-lake species such as the Lake Tanganyika endemic flock inhabit hard, alkaline, oxygen-rich water at elevated pH. Without confirmed habitat data for M. triolobus this distinction matters: the species should not be assigned default soft-acidic parameters unless its habitat is confirmed. Pending further field study, its habitat is characterised as African freshwater according to the general pattern of the genus in the region from which it was described.
Spiny eels are predominantly nocturnal and most active after dark, using the fleshy rostral tip to probe crevices, plant roots and leaf litter for prey. They are strongly associated with structural cover and soft substrate in all systems where they have been studied.
Feeding
Mastacembelus triolobus is presumed to be a carnivore in line with the feeding biology of the genus. All well-studied Mastacembelus are nocturnal benthic predators that use the sensitive, probing snout to locate and extract invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling prey — from the substrate, detritus and vegetation. Larger species also take small fish.
No published diet study for M. triolobus is available. Its morphology — the elongate body, probing snout and small, down-angled mouth — is consistent with substrate-foraging invertebrate predation of the kind documented across the family. In any aquarium context it would be expected to respond to the same benthic, meaty food items that suit other Mastacembelus species.
Mating
Spiny eels reproduce by scattering adhesive eggs in fresh water and giving no parental care, and M. triolobus is expected to follow this pattern. No specific mating observations for this species have been published. In the better-known Mastacembelus and Macrognathus species, courting pairs entwine and move together through vegetation before releasing and fertilising a batch of small, adhesive eggs; the eggs attach to plant leaves, roots or submerged debris and receive no further attention from the parents.
Mastacembelus is not catadromous — it does not migrate to the sea to spawn. Breeding in the genus is linked to seasonal water changes associated with rainfall and flood cycles; rising water temperature and the influx of cooler, oxygenated rain water appear to act as the proximate trigger in many species. For M. triolobus specifically, mating behaviour in the wild or in captivity has not been documented in accessible literature.
Breeding
M. triolobus has not been reported to have been bred in captivity, and given the limited distribution of this species in the ornamental trade and the scarcity of documentation since its 2011 description, captive breeding accounts are unlikely to be available. The reproductive biology of the species is inferred from the family pattern: adhesive eggs scattered among vegetation or over substrate in fresh water, no parental care, and hatching in a few days under warm conditions.
Across Mastacembelidae, successful home-aquarium breeding is rare for any species. Most require a spacious, mature aquarium, conditioning with live and frozen foods over weeks, and a water-change trigger mimicking the onset of the wet season. Larvae are very small and require infusoria or equivalent first foods. For M. triolobus these requirements remain untested; as a recently described species with sparse documentation, captive breeding would represent a notable advance in knowledge.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus triolobus is not an established aquarium fish. The species is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental trade, and its appearance in hobbyist collections would most likely arise from incidental capture in mixed-African-eel exports rather than targeted trade. For any aquarist who did obtain one, the care requirements of the genus apply: a secure, tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable, since spiny eels are adept escape artists that can climb and squeeze through surprisingly small gaps; a deep bed of soft sand for burrowing; caves and shelters of wood or stone; and low-light or dim conditions that allow daytime activity and reduce stress.
As a scaleless fish, M. triolobus shares the copper sensitivity common to all Mastacembelidae. Copper-based medications, often used against common parasites, can be lethal and must be avoided; alternative treatments such as formalin or aquarium salt at appropriate concentrations are used instead in this group. Water quality should be stable and well-oxygenated. Diet in captivity would follow the genus pattern — evening feeds of earthworms, bloodworm, small crustaceans and similar benthic invertebrates, with live or frozen foods preferred over dry pellets for newly imported fish.
Tankmates, if any, should be peaceful species too large to be consumed and robust enough to tolerate an active nocturnal predator in the tank. Given the species' obscurity and data-sparse status, advanced keepers housing it would be contributing to a meaningful gap in knowledge about its biology.
Conservation
Mastacembelus triolobus has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status as of 2026. This is not unusual for a species described as recently as 2011: the IUCN evaluation pipeline lags behind taxonomic novelties, and recently described, narrowly documented African freshwater fish are routinely not evaluated for years or decades after description.
The conservation situation of the species cannot be assessed without confirmed range data. African freshwater habitats face widespread pressures — agricultural run-off, sedimentation, deforestation of riparian zones, artisanal mining, and water abstraction — that affect virtually all river systems on the continent. Narrowly distributed, recently described species are at particular risk because their ranges may fall entirely within disturbed catchments, and their populations may be small and unmonitored. Until a full assessment is undertaken, M. triolobus must be treated as data deficient for conservation purposes.
