Periophthalmus gracilis, the graceful mudskipper, is a small amphibious goby of the brackish mudflats and mangrove fringes of the Indo-Pacific — a fish that is, in the fullest sense of the word, a land-goer. Like all mudskippers it is a true goby (family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae), carrying the hallmark of the group: pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. Reaching little more than 2 in in standard length, it is one of the smallest members of the genus, built for life on exposed tidal mud rather than open water — it breathes atmospheric air kept moist in its gill chambers, hauls itself across mud on its pectoral fins, and excavates a burrow in which it spawns. A paludarium, not an aquarium, is what this fish needs, and it is almost never bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmus gracilis was described by the German ichthyologist Bernard Friedrich Eggert in 1935 and the name has remained stable under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names. The genus Periophthalmus is the most speciose of the mudskipper genera and sits within the family Oxudercidae — the amphibious gobies — which was formerly treated as a subfamily of Gobiidae but is now recognised as a distinct family in most current classifications. Mudskippers belong to the subfamily Oxudercinae, the most terrestrially adapted of all gobies.

The species epithet gracilis is Latin for 'slender' or 'graceful', likely referring to the fish's small, elongate body form compared to its larger relatives. Periophthalmus gracilis should not be confused with the more widely traded Atlantic mudskipper Periophthalmus barbarus or with the larger Asian species P. chrysospilos and P. argentilineatus, all of which share the same general body plan but differ substantially in range, markings and maximum size.

Morphology

Periophthalmus gracilis is a small mudskipper, recorded to 2 in standard length (SL), with a Mekong Delta study of 486 individuals spanning 1–2.5 in total length (TL) and 0.13–1.66 g body mass. It has the characteristic mudskipper body plan: a robust, slightly compressed trunk; bulging, independently mobile eyes set on top of the head that can be retracted into moist sockets; a large, fleshy pectoral fin girdle used for terrestrial locomotion; and the fused pelvic fins that form the sucker disc common to all true gobies. The dorsal fin is divided into a spiny first portion and a soft-rayed second, and coloration is typical mudskipper olive-grey to brownish with patterning that varies with population and condition.

As a true goby (Oxudercidae), the pelvic sucker disc is the single most diagnostic character separating this fish from the superficially similar gudgeons (Eleotridae) whose pelvic fins remain separate. The eyes' high placement on the skull is an adaptation for surveillance above the water surface or above the mud while the fish rests partially submerged. Sexual dimorphism is modest; males typically show more developed dorsal-fin rays and brighter courtship colours during the breeding season.

Habitat

Periophthalmus gracilis occupies brackish tidal mudflats, estuarine margins, and the fringing mangrove forests of the Indo-Pacific, with confirmed records from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Australia. It is a demersal, amphibious species that spends the majority of its active time out of the water, moving across exposed mud or resting at burrow entrances during low tide. The water column itself is used primarily for refuge, territorial skirmishes, and brief forays rather than as a continuous habitat.

Water chemistry reflects the estuarine setting: temperature 75–84 °F, pH 7.0–8.5 (slightly alkaline), and salinity in the range of approximately 1.005–1.015 specific gravity (roughly 6–20 ‰), though wild populations tolerate considerable tidal fluctuation. The microhabitat at the mud surface is warm, humid, and subject to wide daily variation in water level. Periophthalmus gracilis is not a freshwater fish and should not be kept in unsalted fresh water.

Feeding

Periophthalmus gracilis is a micro-predator, hunting on the mud surface and in shallow water for small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, copepods, amphipods, and worms. Like other mudskippers it uses visual pursuit on land and quick snapping strikes, with the mobile eyes allowing binocular targeting of prey at close range. Algal and detrital material may be incidentally ingested but is not a dietary axis for this genus.

In captivity it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and chopped small invertebrates. Most individuals of this size class refuse or poorly accept dry flake food; a diet of live and frozen items is essential to maintain condition and natural behaviour. Food should be presented on or near the land area of a paludarium, not dropped into the water column, since the fish often feeds out of water.

Mating

Like all Periophthalmus species, P. gracilis is a burrow-nesting goby. Males excavate and defend a J- or Y-shaped burrow in soft estuarine mud, and the burrow serves as both a refuge and a breeding chamber. During the breeding season males display conspicuously on the mud surface, raising their dorsal fins, assuming erect postures, and engaging in ritualized encounters with rivals at burrow entrances. A receptive female is courted at the burrow entrance and led inside to spawn.

Territoriality among males is pronounced and requires careful management in captivity: mudskippers in a small enclosure will fight persistently if territories cannot be established, and injuries result. Adequate physical space — and ideally separate burrow sites — must be provided for any attempt to keep multiple males.

Breeding

Spawning takes place entirely inside the burrow. The female deposits adhesive eggs on the ceiling of a dedicated egg chamber within the burrow, and then departs. The male remains at or inside the burrow, regularly topping up the chamber with mouthfuls of air to maintain an oxygen-rich atmosphere around the developing eggs — an unusual and energetically costly behaviour documented in the Periophthalmus breeding literature. Research published in 2023 confirms that the male removes this stored air after embryonic development is complete, at which point the hatching larvae are washed out into brackish or marine water as pelagic plankton.

Because larval development requires open marine or brackish water conditions and the eggs depend on the male's active burrow management, Periophthalmus gracilis is essentially never bred in the home aquarium. This should be stated plainly to anyone considering the species: breeding success in captivity is not a realistic expectation. Wild-caught imports account for virtually all specimens in the trade.

In the aquarium

Periophthalmus gracilis demands a paludarium — a vivarium that combines a shallow brackish water section with a broad terrestrial land area of soft substrate (fine sand or mud) onto which the fish can haul out at will. A standard aquarium is wholly unsuitable. The land area should be substantial relative to the water area, warm (75–84 °F throughout), and maintained at high humidity with ventilation to prevent stagnant air. Salinity in the water section should be kept in the range of 1.005–1.015 SG. A tight-fitting cover is essential: mudskippers are active escape artists and can move surprisingly quickly on land.

At 2 in SL this is one of the smaller Periophthalmus species, but males are highly territorial and groups require enough space and visual barriers (rocks, driftwood, divided land areas) to allow the establishment of individual burrow territories. A single specimen or a closely monitored male-female pair is the safest approach in most home setups. The diet of live and frozen small invertebrates should be offered on the land or at the water's edge; refuse should be removed promptly to maintain water quality in the small water section. Periophthalmus gracilis is a specialist species that rewards patient, informed husbandry but is not suitable as a community fish or for standard aquarium setups.

Conservation

Periophthalmus gracilis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). The species has a reasonably broad Indo-Pacific distribution spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Australia, which suggests a lower immediate extinction risk than narrowly endemic mudskipper species, but no population-level survey data are currently available to confirm its status.

The primary threats to mudskippers across the Indo-Pacific are the familiar pressures of mangrove deforestation, coastal reclamation for aquaculture and urban development, and estuarine pollution. These habitat losses have been severe across much of Southeast Asia and affect the entire mudskipper community. Since P. gracilis cannot be captive-bred under normal aquarium conditions, all trade individuals are wild-caught, and collectors and retailers should source fish responsibly and with transparency about wild-collection origin. Buyers should be aware that fish imported for the specialist paludarium market contribute directly to wild take.
