Taxonomy & naming
Periophthalmus modestus was described by the Scottish naturalist Theodore Edward Cantor in 1842 from specimens collected in Southeast Asia, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats this name as valid within the genus Periophthalmus. The genus sits in the family Oxudercidae — once folded into a broadly defined Gobiidae — and specifically in the subfamily Oxudercinae, which contains all of the amphibious mudskippers. Periophthalmus modestus is therefore a true goby, with the pair of pelvic fins fused into the cup-like sucker disc that defines the goby lineage; it is emphatically not a gudgeon or a sleeper.
The species has been investigated as a model for vertebrate terrestriality, and a chromosome-level genome assembly has been published for it, confirming its identity and its value to evolutionary research. Older literature occasionally placed mudskippers under broad conceptions of Gobius, but the genus Periophthalmus has long been recognised as distinct, and the species epithet modestus (Latin: restrained, modest) refers to the fish's comparatively subdued coloration relative to some of its more brightly marked relatives. The name Periophthalmus cantonensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
P. modestus is a modestly sized mudskipper, reaching a maximum of about 6 in standard length in males. The body is elongate and somewhat cylindrical, covered in small scales and carrying the characteristically large, mobile, periscope-like eyes that give mudskippers their distinctive appearance — each eye can swivel independently in its moist socket and retract for protection. The coloration is subdued: brownish-grey above with faint mottling and a paler belly, a pattern that provides camouflage against the dark tidal mud.
The most important anatomical feature is the pair of robust, limb-like pectoral fins, which mudskippers use in a crutching gait to move across land. The pelvic fins are fused into the sucker disc shared by all gobies, allowing the fish to hold position on sloped or wet surfaces. A first dorsal fin bears erect spines that can be raised in display. The gill chambers are enlarged and kept moist; the fish exchanges oxygen both across the gill surface (when submerged) and across the moist skin and lining of the chamber (when aerial), making it one of the most accomplished air-breathers among bony fish.
Habitat
Periophthalmus modestus occupies the intertidal mudflats, mangrove margins, brackish estuaries and swamps of the temperate and subtropical Northwest Pacific: its native range runs from the coast of Vietnam north through Korea to southern Japan. This is not a tropical species; FishBase records a mean habitat temperature of around 72 °F, with a range from approximately 61–81 °F, reflecting seasonal variation in the temperate estuaries it inhabits.
The fish is found in brackish to marine intertidal zones rather than in fresh water. At low tide it forages actively on the exposed mud surface; as the tide rises it retreats to the mouth of its burrow or climbs vegetation and mangrove roots to stay above water. Humidity is critical: P. modestus can only sustain terrestrial respiration if its skin remains moist, and it actively selects microhabitats that prevent desiccation. It is not a fish for a bare brackish tank — it needs substantial emerged land area.
Feeding
In the wild, P. modestus is a carnivorous micro-predator that moves briskly on land hunting small animals on and just below the mud surface: small crustaceans, isopods, amphipods, worms, insects and other invertebrates encountered during low-tide foraging. It locates prey by sight, using those mobile eyes to track movement on the mud.
In an aquarium or paludarium setting it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, small insect larvae and tiny crustaceans. Because its natural feeding behaviour involves pursuing prey on land, it may ignore or reject food delivered only into the water column. Dry flake food is generally poorly accepted, and a diet restricted to it leads to poor condition. Offering food on the emerged mud or land areas of a paludarium better matches the fish's instincts and tends to elicit a more active response.
Mating
Spawning in P. modestus is tied closely to season. Studies at Suncheon Bay on the south coast of Korea document a spawning window running from approximately April to September, with peak reproductive activity in May as measured by the gonadosomatic index. Males establish and vigorously defend burrow territories on the mudflat during the breeding season.
Courtship takes place on the mud surface, with males performing fin-raising and leaping displays to attract females and deter rival males. Once a female is receptive she enters the male's burrow to spawn. Fecundity recorded in the Korean population ranges from around 1,664 to over 13,000 eggs per clutch, reflecting variation with female body size. Pair formation is transient — after spawning the female leaves and the male takes sole responsibility for the clutch.
Breeding
The breeding biology of P. modestus is remarkable and unlike anything in conventional aquarium fish-keeping. The male excavates a J- or Y-shaped mud burrow with a sealed terminal egg chamber. After spawning, the eggs adhere to the walls of this chamber, which the male maintains in a state of high oxygen by making repeated trips to the surface during low tide, gulping mouthfuls of air and depositing them into the chamber. This behaviour — unique among fishes — keeps the egg chamber aerobic despite being below the anaerobic mud.
When conditions are right — typically on a rising nocturnal tide — the male floods the chamber, and the eggs hatch simultaneously into pelagic larvae that are carried out into the brackish and coastal marine environment, where they develop before returning to the mudflat habitat. This makes P. modestus effectively impossible to breed in a home aquarium: recreating the seasonal temperature cycle, the tidal rhythm, the burrow excavation, the air-deposition behaviour and the marine-plankton larval phase in captivity is far beyond normal hobbyist means. All fish offered in the trade are wild-collected.
The Journal of Experimental Biology has documented the core mechanism: mudskippers brood their eggs in the air-filled burrow but submerge them on a tidal cue for hatching, a precise integration of terrestrial and aquatic phases that is the product of millions of years of intertidal evolution.
In the aquarium
Periophthalmus modestus is an advanced-level species that demands a paludarium — a vivarium with both a brackish water section and a substantial dry land area — rather than a conventional aquarium. Without emerged land it cannot behave naturally, cannot feed properly and will not thrive. The land area should be constructed from fine mud or sand substrate capable of holding burrows or shallow depressions, and the water section must be brackish: a specific gravity of around 1.005–1.015 (5–15 ppt salinity) is appropriate. The entire enclosure must be kept humid and tightly covered, as mudskippers are accomplished jumpers and escape easily through any gap.
Water temperature should reflect the species' temperate origins — mid-teens to mid-twenties Celsius — rather than the warm tropical settings given to most estuarine gobies. Multiple individuals can be kept together but males are territorial and will spar, so the enclosure needs to be large enough to allow sight-line breaks and separate land territories for each fish. Full-spectrum lighting that supports a day/night cycle aids normal activity patterns.
Feeding requires patience: food should be delivered onto the land area or at the water's edge rather than into open water. Small live invertebrates — crickets, fruit flies, bloodworms, small shrimp — work best. A paludarium for P. modestus is a specialist display rather than a community setup, and the fish should not be housed with fish or invertebrates too small to avoid being eaten, nor in the same tank as unrelated tropical community fish that require full fresh water and higher temperatures. Captive breeding has not been achieved under ordinary hobbyist conditions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Periophthalmus modestus as Least Concern in March 2024, reflecting its wide distribution, common occurrence across Northwest Pacific estuaries, and the absence of evidence of population-level decline. It is one of the more abundant intertidal gobies in its range, present from Vietnam to southern Japan, and its tolerance of brackish, turbid and seasonally variable conditions appears to give it some resilience to the level of habitat disturbance typical of populated coastlines.
None the less, the intertidal mudflat and mangrove habitats on which P. modestus depends are among the most threatened coastal ecosystems in East and Southeast Asia, subject to ongoing reclamation for agriculture, aquaculture and urban development, as well as coastal modification and pollution. The temperate Korean and Japanese populations face pressures from industrial development of tidal flats. Because all aquarium specimens are wild-caught and captive reproduction has not been demonstrated, any trade demand adds directly to wild offtake, though the species is not heavily traded compared with warmer-water mudskippers. The 2024 Least Concern status should be understood against a backdrop of continuing coastal habitat loss across the species' range.
