Periophthalmus kalolo, the common mudskipper, is among the most recognisable of the amphibious gobies — a small, air-breathing fish that hauls itself across mangrove mudflats on its pectoral fins and spends long stretches of time entirely out of the water. It is a true goby (family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae), carrying the fused pelvic sucker disc that distinguishes the real gobies from the sleepers and gudgeons, and it belongs to a group that has pushed the boundary between aquatic and terrestrial life further than almost any other bony fish. Widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific estuaries and mangrove swamps, it is small and modestly coloured but extraordinary in its biology: it breathes through its skin and gill-chamber lining when on land, holds water in its gill chambers to keep them moist, digs and defends a J-shaped burrow in the mud, and spawns inside that burrow in an air-filled chamber that the male tops up with mouthfuls of air. It is rarely if ever bred in captivity, and demands a paludarium — land area, brackish water, and high humidity — rather than a conventional aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmus kalolo was described by the French naturalist René-Primevère Lesson in 1831, originally from material collected in the Indo-Pacific. The genus Periophthalmus — the name means 'prominent-eyed' in Greek — was erected by Bloch and Schneider in 1801 and currently holds around a dozen valid species of true mudskippers. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the genus in the family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae, the amphibious mudskippers that represent the apex of terrestrial adaptation among the gobies.

The Gobioidei as a whole have undergone significant taxonomic revision in recent decades, and names formerly placed in Gobius or in a broadly construed Periopthalmodon have been reshuffled. Periophthalmus kalolo is the Catalog's valid name for this species; older combination names appear in the historical literature. Within the wider Oxudercidae, the mudskippers of the Oxudercinae are the most derived — they are the ones that climb roots, defend territories on land, and court from exposed perches. The true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae together) are overwhelmingly a marine group; the estuarine and brackish mudskippers, together with the freshwater river gobies of other subfamilies, represent the minority of the Gobioidei that enter or depend on inland waters.

Morphology

Periophthalmus kalolo is a small mudskipper, typically reaching 1–2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of its genus. The body is typical of the group: stocky, slightly laterally compressed toward the tail, and covered in small, roughly ctenoid scales over the flanks. The most immediately striking features are the prominent, independently mobile eyes set high on the head, which can be swivelled to give a wide field of view when the fish is on land and are capable of being retracted briefly into moist sockets to keep them from drying out. The first dorsal fin is tall and sail-like; the pectoral fins are muscular and arm-like, used as limbs for 'crutching' locomotion across mud.

The pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that is the defining character of the true gobies — distinguishing Periophthalmus and its relatives from the eleotrids (sleepers and gudgeons) whose pelvis fins stay separate. Coloration is generally a mottled olive-brown with pale spotting or a faint iridescent sheen, providing good camouflage against the mud and root substrates the fish frequents. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced at rest, though males tend to develop a slightly higher first dorsal fin, used in territorial and courtship displays, and can be more intensely coloured when active.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical brackish mudflats, mangrove swamps, and estuarine margins across the Indo-West Pacific. It lives at the tidal interface — the zone that is submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide — where it occupies the mud surface and the aerial root systems of mangroves. The water is warm (typically 75–86 °F in its native range), brackish to nearly marine, and rich in organic matter. Dissolved oxygen in the overlying water can be very low, but the fish manages this by air-breathing.

The mudskipper is genuinely amphibious, not merely an air-gap survivor. It actively chooses to be on land, basking, feeding, and defending territories on exposed mud surfaces during the day. It returns to water or retreats into its burrow to avoid desiccation and to spawn, but it is not a fish that simply tolerates exposure — it is physiologically adapted for it, obtaining oxygen through vascularised skin and gill-chamber linings when out of the water. This habitat is specialised and critical: mangrove fringe with intact intertidal mud, access to land and aerial exposure, and brackish salinity are all obligate conditions the fish cannot do without.

Feeding

Periophthalmus kalolo is a micro-predator on the intertidal mud surface. In the wild it takes small crustaceans — copepods, amphipods, and small crabs — along with insect larvae, worms, and other invertebrates encountered while foraging across exposed mud. It hunts primarily by sight, using its mobile, periscope-like eyes to detect prey both in the water and on the mud surface, and it is capable of pursuing small prey across both media.

In the aquarium it requires small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, copepods, tiny crustaceans, and small insect larvae — and will typically ignore dry flake or accept it only poorly. Being honest about the feeding requirement is an important keeper consideration: this is a fish that needs meaty, appropriately small live or frozen items to maintain condition. Its predatory strike on land is rapid and accurate, and feeding at the water's edge or on a moistened land surface can elicit natural hunting behaviour in a well-designed paludarium.

Mating

Courtship and mate attraction in Periophthalmus mudskippers are predominantly terrestrial and visual — which sets this group sharply apart from most fish. Males defend intertidal territories and court females from exposed mud surfaces or elevated perches on mangrove roots, erecting the tall first dorsal fin as a signal flag and performing leaping, bounding displays visible from a considerable distance. Territory holding is energetically expensive and requires the male to be physically fit and in good condition.

Females are drawn to territories where burrows are already established and defended, and the courtship sequence involves both the male's above-ground displays and his leading of the female to the burrow entrance. In a paludarium a territorial male will display to mirrors or to other males through glass, giving keepers a vivid demonstration of the signalling function of that tall dorsal fin, but achieving actual courtship and spawning in captivity requires a sufficiently large enclosure with appropriate substrate and burrow conditions — a setup that is demanding to provide.

Breeding

Periophthalmus kalolo, like other mudskipper mudskippers, spawns inside a self-excavated mud burrow. The male digs a J- or Y-shaped burrow in the intertidal mud, with the chamber at the base positioned above the waterline inside the burrow structure. He fills this air pocket by carrying mouthfuls of atmospheric air down to the chamber, maintaining an oxygen-rich environment for the eggs. The female is led into the burrow to spawn, depositing adhesive eggs on the burrow wall within the air chamber, after which the male remains in the burrow to guard and refresh the air supply, repeatedly surfacing and gulping air to keep the chamber oxygenated.

Larvae hatch as pelagic young and are released into brackish or marine water, where they develop as part of the zooplankton before settling. This pelagic larval stage means that the complete breeding cycle cannot be maintained in a home aquarium: the adults can be kept and may attempt to burrow and display, but raising the pelagic larvae through to settlement requires open or large-volume brackish or marine conditions that are beyond typical hobby setups. Periophthalmus mudskippers are consequently not bred in the aquarium, and all specimens in the trade are wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Keeping Periophthalmus kalolo well demands a paludarium — a setup that provides a land area, a body of brackish water, and high ambient humidity — not an ordinary aquarium filled to the brim. The land section should be a firm, slightly moist substrate of fine sand or aquarium-grade mud that allows the fish to haul out freely; the water section needs a salinity of around 1.005–1.010 specific gravity (light brackish), though the fish is tolerant of a range. Temperature should be held at 75–82 °F throughout. A secure, close-fitting lid is non-negotiable: mudskippers are accomplished jumpers and climbers, and an uncovered tank will lose its inhabitants.

Because these are small but territorial fish, a paludarium with adequate land area and visual barriers is important for reducing aggression between individuals. Only compatible groups or single specimens should be kept together unless the enclosure is large enough to allow multiple territories. Diet in captivity is small live and frozen invertebrates, as described above; dry flake is usually refused. The fish are rarely imported and are considered specialist animals; any hobbyist attempting them should research the paludarium requirements thoroughly before purchase. They are not suitable for community aquaria, beginner setups, or any tank without a substantial land zone. All individuals offered in the trade are wild-caught, as captive breeding has not been achieved.

Conservation

Periophthalmus kalolo has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE), which is the honest position rather than an assumption of safety. Mudskippers are not a high-priority group for IUCN assessment, and many species in the genus share this NE status despite being locally common. The species is widely distributed across Indo-West Pacific mangrove coasts, and no targeted fishery or major collecting pressure for the aquarium trade appears to affect it significantly — it is rarely imported for hobby purposes.

The primary conservation concern for all intertidal mudskippers is habitat integrity: mangrove deforestation, coastal reclamation, pollution of estuarine mudflats, and the disruption of tidal regimes threaten the specific microhabitat — intertidal mud with intact burrow substrate — on which these fish depend for feeding, territory, and breeding. Mangrove loss across the Indo-Pacific has been severe and is ongoing. While no species-specific data on P. kalolo population trends is available, the loss of mangrove habitat represents a real and documented pressure on the community of animals, including mudskippers, that depends on it.
