Periophthalmus barbarus, the Atlantic mudskipper, is the only mudskipper found along the West African coast — a remarkable amphibious true goby (family Oxudercidae) that spends much of its life out of water, hauling itself across mudflats on muscular pectoral fins while breathing through its skin and the thin film of water it keeps pooled in its gill chambers. Where the vast majority of gobies are marine, this species occupies the tidal mangrove swamps and brackish estuaries from Mauritania south to Angola, and it is the quintessential ambassador of a group that pushes the definition of "fish" to its biological limit. In the aquarium it demands a paludarium — land as much as water, warmth, high humidity, and a brackish setup — and rewards the effort with extraordinary behaviour that no other fish in the hobby can match.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmus barbarus was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766 under the combination Gobius barbarus, placing it in the catch-all genus Gobius that served ichthyologists of that era as a receptacle for most small bottom-dwelling fishes. The species was subsequently moved into Periophthalmus — the genus erected by Bloch and Schneider in 1801 specifically for the mudskippers — and that placement is upheld in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority for valid names used here.

Periophthalmus barbarus belongs to the family Oxudercidae, the most derived lineage of the Gobioidei. It is unambiguously a true goby — the pelvic fins are fused into the characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc that defines real gobies and distinguishes them from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Within Oxudercidae it sits in the amphibious subfamily Oxudercinae alongside the other mudskippers, a group that has taken the gobies' tendency toward intertidal life further than any other vertebrates, becoming facultative air-breathers capable of terrestrial locomotion. The epithet barbarus is Latin for 'foreign' or 'from distant lands', reflecting the species' West African origin from the perspective of 18th-century European science.

Morphology

The Atlantic mudskipper reaches a maximum standard length of about 6 in, though field studies find mean sizes closer to 3–3.5 in; it is thus a moderately large goby by the standards of the family. The body is robust and somewhat compressed laterally, with a blunt head disproportionately large relative to the trunk — an adaptation for the species' amphibious lifestyle in which the eyes must swivel independently to scan a terrestrial environment. The eyes are perched high on the head, protrude markedly, and can be retracted into their moist sockets to keep them from drying out on the mudflat. The fused pelvic fins form the classic goboid sucker disc, here used for anchoring on mudflat surfaces rather than clinging to boulders in current.

The most distinctive locomotory structures are the thickened, muscular pectoral fins, which the fish uses as crutches to prop itself up and propel itself across mud in a "crutching" gait; it can also skip rapidly by arching the body and flicking the tail. The dorsal fin is divided into two parts: the first is tall and saillike, often striped or spotted, and is used in display as well as in signalling between individuals on the mudflat. Coloration is a drab brownish-olive dorsally, paler ventrally, with dark mottling and spots; the first dorsal fin typically shows contrasting markings that intensify during territorial and courtship displays. Sexual dimorphism is modest — males tend to be larger and develop brighter first-dorsal colouration during the breeding season.

Habitat

Periophthalmus barbarus is a resident of tidal estuaries, mangrove swamps, and intertidal mudflats along the West African coast from Mauritania south to Angola. It is a characteristically brackish species, living in the zone where fresh river water mixes with the sea — a dynamic environment where salinity, temperature and tidal exposure all fluctuate across the day and the seasons. Water temperatures in its natural range run from approximately 77–86 °F; pH is typically in the range 7.0–8.5, reflecting the influence of both freshwater inputs and the alkalinity of seawater.

The fish spends much of its active time on the exposed mud surface beside the water, retreating into water to keep its skin moist and to escape predators but ascending again at low tide to feed, display, and defend territories. It breathes air through its thin, well-vascularised skin (cutaneous respiration) as well as through the lining of the mouth and gill cavity — it actively keeps a thin film of water in its branchial chamber to facilitate gas exchange, and it dies if kept submerged without access to air. The mangrove root zone and surrounding open mud provide both feeding grounds and the soft, deep substrate into which it digs its nesting burrow.

Feeding

In nature Periophthalmus barbarus is an opportunistic carnivore and insectivore, foraging actively on the exposed mud surface at low tide. Its diet includes crabs, shrimp, insects and their larvae, annelid worms, nematodes, and other small invertebrates; it will also scavenge organic detritus from the mud surface. Research confirms the diet is overwhelmingly animal matter, with terrestrial insects (particularly at the surface) making up a significant portion alongside aquatic crustaceans and worms.

In the aquarium it accepts live crickets, worms, grasshoppers, small roaches, mealworms and earthworms presented on the land area, as well as live and frozen aquatic foods including bloodworm and brine shrimp offered at the water's edge. Feeding should be done once per day; overfeeding fouls the enclosure rapidly. Dried flake and pellet foods are not recommended — accounts consistently report that flake causes bloating and digestive problems in this species, and it is best avoided entirely. Because the fish feeds primarily on land, prey items should be delivered to the substrate rather than scattered into the water column.

Mating

Breeding in Periophthalmus barbarus is intimately tied to territory, and males invest heavily in holding and advertising a patch of mudflat that contains an excavated burrow suitable for egg-laying. Males are conspicuously territorial and will display vigorously against rivals, raising the first dorsal fin — which acts as a visual signal readable at distance across open mud — and engaging in chasing, jaw-locking and shoving. These territorial interactions are among the most striking behaviours in the species and are readily observed in a paludarium with an adequate land area.

Courtship follows from territory establishment: a resident male courts passing females through fin displays and directed movements toward the burrow entrance, leading the female underground to inspect the spawning chamber. Receptive females follow the male into the burrow to mate; unreceptive individuals are driven away. Because mudskippers are active on the tidal surface during daylight and retreat to burrows at high tide, their social and sexual behaviour is tightly linked to the tidal cycle — a factor that makes replicating the full breeding sequence in captivity extremely challenging.

Breeding

Spawning takes place entirely underground. The male excavates a J- or Y-shaped burrow into the mud, creating a terminal egg chamber that sits above the waterline in the burrow; he then actively maintains an air pocket in this chamber, topping it up by carrying mouthfuls of air down from the surface. Eggs are attached to the burrow wall inside this air-filled chamber, where they develop in a moist but aerial environment rather than underwater. The male guards the eggs and continues to refresh the air supply throughout incubation. Hatching larvae are pelagic and develop in brackish or marine water, dispersing from the burrow on tidal flooding.

Captive breeding has not been achieved reliably. The combination of requirements — deep, soft mud substrate of sufficient depth for full burrow excavation, a functional tidal cycle to trigger spawning behaviour, stable air pockets, brackish water chemistry, and the pelagic dispersal of larvae — makes replication in a home paludarium effectively impossible with current hobby techniques. No published protocols for successful captive reproduction exist. Specimens in the trade are wild-collected from West African estuaries. This should be communicated clearly to prospective keepers.

In the aquarium

Periophthalmus barbarus is a specialist fish that requires a paludarium rather than a conventional aquarium — an enclosure that provides both a land section and a shallow water section, with the land area being at least as large as, and ideally larger than, the water portion. The enclosure must be covered tightly and run warm (77–86 °F throughout both sections) with high ambient humidity to prevent the fish's skin from drying out. The substrate on the land section should be a deep, soft, ideally muddy material into which the fish can dig; fine sand alone is less satisfactory. A low-wattage heater keeps the water section brackish and warm; a specific gravity of around 1.005 (brackish, not full marine) is appropriate. Strong lighting supports the fish's diurnal activity.

Mudskippers are jumpers and strong enough to push open loose lids, so a secure, ventilated cover is non-negotiable. They are also territorial: a single male with one or two females is easier to manage than a group of males in a smaller enclosure. The tank should offer visual barriers on the land section to reduce aggression. Diet must be live or frozen animal prey; flake is contraindicated. Mudskippers are not community fish and cannot be mixed with species requiring full submersion or different water conditions. The difficulty of their care requirements means they are best suited to experienced keepers who can commit to the specialised setup they need; given that, they are robust, long-lived, and extraordinarily interesting to observe.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Periophthalmus barbarus as Least Concern (LC), reflecting its wide distribution along the West African coast from Mauritania to Angola and the broad, continuous extent of its estuarine and mangrove habitat across that range. No quantified population decline has been documented and the species is considered tolerant of the moderate levels of mangrove disturbance that characterise its range.

Nonetheless, the long-term health of West African mangrove systems is under pressure from coastal development, urbanisation, pollution from oil extraction (particularly in the Niger Delta, within this species' range), and climate-driven changes to tidal dynamics and salinity. Because captive breeding has not been achieved, all specimens in the aquarium trade are wild-collected — a consideration for prospective keepers. Wild collection pressure on a Least Concern species with a wide range is unlikely to be a primary conservation driver, but buyers should be aware of the provenance of any individual they acquire. Supporting habitat protection for West African mangroves is the most meaningful conservation action for this species.
