Stiphodon caeruleus is a small, rheophilic stream goby from the Indo-Pacific, described by Parenti and Maciolek in 1993 and placed in the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies, distinguished from the sleeper gudgeons by pelvic fins that are fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. Like all members of its genus it is amphidromous: adults live and spawn in fast, clear freshwater streams, but the hatchlings are swept downstream to develop as marine plankton before the juveniles return upriver. This obligate marine larval phase makes it effectively impossible to breed in captivity; all specimens in the trade are wild-collected. A genuine algae grazer that rasps diatoms and biofilm from smooth rock in turbulent water, it is a specialist fish for mature, high-flow aquaria, not a beginner's choice.

Taxonomy & naming

Stiphodon caeruleus was described by Lynne Parenti and John Maciolek in 1993. It belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae within the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies in the modern classification upheld by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences). The true gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group; their freshwater representatives are the exception, and many of those that do enter fresh water do so only as part of an amphidromous lifecycle rather than as permanent freshwater residents.

The key morphological character separating the true gobies from the visually similar sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) and other goby-like fishes is the pelvic girdle: in true gobies the two pelvic fins are fused to form a concave, cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the fish. In the fast currents Stiphodon occupies this disc serves as an anchor on smooth rock. The generic name Stiphodon derives from Greek stíphos (a compact group or mass) and odón (tooth), referring to the specialised rasping dental apparatus used to graze biofilm.

Morphology

Stiphodon caeruleus is a small goby reaching approximately 1–2 in in standard length, with the slender, slightly dorsoventrally compressed body typical of rheophilic Sicydiinae. The species epithet caeruleus — Latin for sky-blue or cerulean — refers to the striking blue or blue-green iridescence that males display along the flanks and in the unpaired fins. As in other Stiphodon, males are considerably more colourful than females, showing intensified pigmentation during territorial and courtship displays.

The fused pelvic sucker disc is well developed, as expected for a goby that clings to smooth basalt and granite cobbles in fast stream reaches. The mouth is subterminal and furnished with fine, comb-like teeth adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates rather than seizing mobile prey. Specific meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the figures given here reflect the size range typical of the genus.

Habitat

Stiphodon caeruleus inhabits fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated freshwater streams on Indo-Pacific islands, the typical habitat of the Sicydiinae. These are rheophilic environments: shallow riffles and runs over smooth rock and cobble, with strong current, high dissolved oxygen and minimal sedimentation. Water clarity is high and the streambed supports a dense growth of periphyton, diatoms and fine filamentous algae — the food resource on which the species depends.

Water temperatures vary with latitude and altitude but are generally in the range of 72–82 °F in lowland tropical island streams. pH is near-neutral to slightly alkaline, reflecting the volcanic or limestone geology of many Indo-Pacific islands. The fish does not inhabit still or slow water, blackwater pools or lowland muddy rivers; its needs are the opposite of a generalised tropical community fish.

Feeding

Stiphodon caeruleus is a specialised aufwuchs grazer. In its natural stream habitat it rasps biofilm, periphyton, diatoms and fine green algae from the surface of smooth rock using its comb-like incisors, moving along the substrate in a characteristic browsing motion visible in the wild. This is not opportunistic scavenging — it is a dietary specialisation comparable to that of mbuna cichlids on Lake Malawi rock faces.

In the aquarium this specialisation is both the most important care point and the commonest failure mode. A newly set up tank with bare glass or unconditioned rock provides nothing to eat, and the fish will starve before dry or frozen foods are accepted in sufficient quantity. It requires a mature tank whose rockscape carries a visible covering of green and brown algae and diatom film, supplemented with blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette, spinach) and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia. A Stiphodon that is not seen grazing constantly is a Stiphodon that is going hungry.

Mating

Stiphodon caeruleus, like all members of the genus, is amphidromous and breeds in fresh water. Males are territorial, defending small patches of smooth rock or shallow cave beneath a cobble, and display their blue iridescence intensely to court females and repel rival males. Courtship has been observed in the genus involving prolonged lateral displays by the male before the female is led to the spawning site.

As in other Sicydiinae, spawning takes place on a hard substrate — the underside of a stone or in a shallow excavation beneath a cobble — within the freshwater stream. The male's bright colouration is most intense during the breeding season and likely functions as an honest signal of male quality in the visually clear, fast-flowing stream environment.

Breeding

The male guards a clutch of small, adhesive eggs on a stone or cave surface in the freshwater stream, fanning them to maintain oxygen supply until hatching. Up to this point the biology is superficially similar to a resident cave-spawning goby. The critical difference is what happens at hatching: the tiny larvae of Stiphodon are not retained in the stream. They are swept immediately downstream by the current, enter the estuary and sea, and spend a period — weeks to months depending on conditions — developing as marine planktonic post-larvae.

When development is complete, the juvenile fish return to the coast and actively seek fresh water, ascending rivers and streams; some Sicydiinae are documented climbing waterfalls using the pelvic sucker disc. This obligate amphidromous lifecycle cannot be replicated in a home aquarium or even in most public-aquarium facilities. There is no documented captive breeding of Stiphodon caeruleus, and the species should be considered impossible to breed in captivity. All fish in trade are wild-collected, which has direct conservation implications.

In the aquarium

Stiphodon caeruleus is not a beginner's fish, but it is rewarding for the aquarist prepared to meet its specific needs. The single most important requirement is a mature, algae-bearing aquarium: the tank must have been running for months and carry a genuine covering of green algae and diatom film over smooth rock and glass. Without this, the fish starves. Supplement algae grazing with blanched vegetables and the occasional small frozen offering.

Strong, directional flow is essential — a powerhead or circulation pump creating a clear current over the rock is not optional. The tank should be fully covered, as Stiphodon are capable jumpers. Keep only males that cannot see each other, or provide substantial sight-breaks between territories; males in visual contact display and spar constantly, which is stressful. Water quality must be consistently high: cool-to-warm tropical temperatures (72–82 °F), near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and minimal nitrates reflecting the pristine stream conditions the fish is adapted to. Because all specimens are wild-caught, they arrive stressed; a careful acclimatisation protocol and immediate attention to the algae resource on day one are essential.

Conservation

Stiphodon caeruleus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Many Stiphodon species are island or stream endemics with restricted ranges, making them inherently vulnerable to local habitat disturbance — stream impoundment, deforestation, and agricultural runoff are the primary threats across the Indo-Pacific island streams these gobies depend on.

The amphidromous lifecycle adds a further dimension: because larvae must spend time at sea before returning to fresh water, any barrier between the stream and the coast — a dam, a water diversion, a heavily modified estuary — can functionally extirpate a local population even if stream quality upstream is adequate. The trade in this and related Stiphodon relies entirely on wild collection, since captive breeding is not feasible. Conscientious sourcing, where fish have been collected sustainably and are healthy on arrival, is the most direct step available to aquarists.
