Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon maculidorsalis was described in 2013 by the Japanese ichthyologist Katsutoshi Maeda and Heok Hee Tan on the basis of material from West Sumatra, Indonesia. The genus Stiphodon belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae within the family Oxudercidae — the largest family within the true gobies (order Gobiiformes). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places Stiphodon firmly in Oxudercidae, and earlier combinations under Gobius or Sicydium are now considered synonyms.
The gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly a marine group; Stiphodon and its sibling genera in Sicydiinae are notable exceptions in that the adults are obligate freshwater residents, though the larvae are entirely marine. The defining character of the true gobies — pelvic fins fused into a fleshy, cup-shaped sucker disc — distinguishes them from the superficially similar sleepers and gudgeons (family Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Stiphodon maculidorsalis is a true goby and possesses this sucker disc, which it uses to anchor itself to stream substrate in fast current.
The specific epithet maculidorsalis is Latin for 'spotted back' or 'spotted dorsal', referring to the distinctive dorsal markings that set this species apart from its congeners. The common name orange-fin stiphodon alludes to the vivid orange or orange-red tones developed in the fins of breeding males.
Morphology
Stiphodon maculidorsalis is a small goby; congeners in the genus typically reach 1–2 in in total length, and available data suggest this species falls within that range. The pelvic fins are fully fused into the sucker disc characteristic of true gobies, an adaptation for life in fast-flowing streams over smooth and polished rock.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as is typical across Stiphodon. Males are vividly coloured, exhibiting the orange or orange-red finnage that gives the species its vernacular name, along with the spotted or mottled dorsal patterning referenced in the scientific name. Females and juveniles are cryptically coloured in shades of brown and grey with horizontal dark striping — the drab colouration provides camouflage against the stream-bed while the fish grazes biofilm. The body is elongate and the head somewhat flattened, well suited to pressing close to the substrate in strong current.
Habitat
Like all Stiphodon, this species inhabits swift, clear, highly oxygenated freshwater streams — the kind of clean, fast-running riffles and cascades found in coastal and foothill drainages close to the sea in West Sumatra. The substrate is typically smooth rock and cobble encrusted with the biofilm, diatoms, and fine algae that form the staple diet of the genus. Water is warm, oligotrophic, and virtually free of sediment; turbidity and organic loading are lethal to these fish over time.
A key feature of the habitat is proximity to the sea: Stiphodon are amphidromous, so the larvae must reach the ocean after hatching, and the juveniles must be able to return upriver. Populations accordingly cluster in low- to mid-elevation coastal drainages rather than remote inland headwaters. Current is strong enough that the fish must use their pelvic sucker to maintain position on rock surfaces. Water temperatures in Sumatran lowland-foothill streams typically range from roughly 72–82 °F across seasons, with the streams remaining clear and well-oxygenated year-round.
Feeding
Stiphodon maculidorsalis is an aufwuchs grazer: it rasps biofilm, diatoms, and fine algae directly from the surface of smooth rocks using a specialised, comb-like lower jaw adapted for scraping. It is not a carnivore in the conventional sense and it is not a flake-eater. In its natural stream habitat, the biofilm on current-swept boulders and cobbles provides a continuously renewed food supply.
In the aquarium this is the most important aspect of the species' husbandry and the chief cause of keeper failure. A fish placed in a new or sterile tank, or one with bare glass and bare rock, will find nothing to eat and will slowly starve even if conventional foods are offered. The keeper must establish and maintain a mature rockscape thick with natural biofilm before introducing the fish. Once established, the diet can be supplemented with soft green vegetables (blanched spinach, courgette, nori), algae wafers, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp. The species is not for beginners.
Mating
Stiphodon maculidorsalis is amphidromous: adults breed in fresh water, where the male establishes a small territory on a rock face or within a crevice in the stream current, and courts females with colour display and fin-spreading. The brilliant male colouration of the genus — the orange fin pigmentation that names this species — functions primarily as a breeding signal directed at rival males and receptive females.
In the aquarium, males are territorial with one another, and a single male should be kept with one or more females unless the tank is large enough to provide adequate line-of-sight breaks. Breeding behaviour has been documented in related Stiphodon kept in captivity, but successful captive reproduction is rare and the species is generally considered effectively impossible to breed in the home aquarium due to its amphidromous life history.
Breeding
Stiphodon maculidorsalis is amphidromous and effectively cannot be bred in the home aquarium. When breeding does occur — in the wild or in rare documented captive attempts with related species — the male guards a clutch of adhesive eggs deposited on a rock surface or within a crevice. The eggs hatch into tiny, poorly developed larvae that must be swept downstream to the sea to complete their development as marine plankton.
After a period at sea, the post-larvae migrate back into fresh water and ascend rivers as juveniles, using the pelvic sucker disc to climb past obstacles and waterfalls. This marine larval phase cannot be replicated in a freshwater aquarium, and the larvae die if they do not reach seawater shortly after hatching. As a consequence, essentially all Stiphodon maculidorsalis available in the aquarium trade are wild-collected, typically as post-larvae or juveniles caught during their upriver migration. Buyers should be aware of this when sourcing the species.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon maculidorsalis is an occasional import in the specialist goby trade, valued for the vivid male colouration. It is not a beginner's fish. The tank must be established well in advance: a mature set-up with a good covering of natural biofilm and green algae on rocks is non-negotiable, and strong water flow with high dissolved oxygen is essential. A powerhead or wavemaker creating a swift current over a rockscape is the right starting point. Water must be clean, clear, and warm — around 72–82 °F — with regular water changes to keep nitrate low.
The tank should be covered, as gobies in strong current can jump. Males are territorial toward one another; keep one male per tank unless the aquarium is large. Females are less aggressive and groups of females can be kept together. The species can be maintained alongside other small, non-competitive fish that prefer the same fast, clean-water conditions. Do not keep it with species that outcompete it at feeding or require still, warm, murky water.
Because Stiphodon are wild-collected and amphidromous, each fish represents a limited resource. The keeper's goal should be to maximise the fish's lifespan — which in the genus can reach several years in a well-maintained tank — through proper biofilm husbandry, strong flow, and pristine water quality.
Conservation
Stiphodon maculidorsalis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). As a species endemic to West Sumatra, Indonesia — a single island region — any deterioration in stream water quality, sedimentation from deforestation, or alteration of coastal drainages could affect the wild population. Sumatra has experienced extensive land-use change and deforestation pressure, which threatens the clear, fast-flowing streams these gobies depend on.
The amphidromous life history adds another layer of vulnerability: disruption to the marine larval phase (pollution, coastal habitat loss) or the upriver migration corridor (dams, water abstraction) can break the life cycle entirely. Because the species is wild-collected for the aquarium trade rather than captive-bred, collection pressure adds to these habitat pressures, though trade volumes appear modest given how infrequently the species appears in importers' lists. Hobbyists who keep Stiphodon should favour healthy, alert wild-caught individuals and provide optimal conditions to maximise longevity, as captive propagation remains out of reach.
