Stiphodon elegans, the green riffle goby, is a small, brilliantly coloured true goby of Indo-Pacific coastal streams — a fish that spends its adult life rasping algae and biofilm from sunlit boulders in fast, crystal-clear mountain water, and whose biology is shaped at every level by the sea it can never quite leave behind. It is a member of the subfamily Sicydiinae, a group of amphidromous stream gobies whose adults breed in fresh water but whose larvae must complete their early development in the ocean. That lifecycle, combined with a specialist algae-grazing diet and a need for highly oxygenated, swift-flowing water, puts Stiphodon elegans well outside the comfort zone of ordinary community fishkeeping — and firmly in the sights of aquarists willing to meet it on its own terms.

Taxonomy & naming

Stiphodon elegans was first described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1879 under the name Sicydium elegans, placing it in the genus that then served as a catch-all for Pacific cling gobies. It was later transferred to Stiphodon, a genus established by F.W. Peters in 1860 and now containing roughly 30 described species of algae-grazing rheophilic gobies distributed across the Indo-Pacific. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and the Catalog of Fishes confirm the current valid combination as Stiphodon elegans (Steindachner, 1879), the parenthetical authority indicating the change of genus since the original description.

Stiphodon belongs to the family Oxudercidae and the subfamily Sicydiinae, a clade of true gobies — fish that carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, the defining character of the family and the first thing that distinguishes a goby from the superficially similar sleepers (Eleotridae). The Gobii are overwhelmingly a marine family, with freshwater incursions the exception rather than the rule; the Sicydiinae are one such exception, having colonised upland rainforest streams across the tropical Indo-Pacific through an amphidromous lifecycle that keeps one foot in the sea at all times.

The species epithet elegans is Latin for 'elegant' or 'refined', a nod to the fish's vivid and well-proportioned coloration. In older literature it may appear as Sicydium elegans; the combination Stiphodon elegans has been standard since the systematic revision of the genus.

Morphology

Stiphodon elegans is a slender, cylindrical-bodied goby reaching around 2 in in standard length. Like all members of the family Oxudercidae, it carries the fused pelvic fins that form the characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc used to anchor itself to rocks in fast current — the simplest way to separate a true goby from the sleepers and gudgeons that superficially resemble it. The first dorsal fin is short and erect; the second dorsal and anal fins are soft-rayed and run along the rear half of the body; the caudal fin is rounded.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as in virtually all Stiphodon. Males in breeding dress are spectacular: the body takes on an iridescent blue-green wash, often with iridescent lateral stripes or spots, orange or red accents on the unpaired fins, and a darkened pelvic disc. The coloration intensifies during courtship and fades to a drabber, mottled brownish pattern at rest or when stressed. Females and sub-adults are cryptically mottled in brown and tan with a faint lateral stripe — a classic example of the sex-limited ornamentation common in the genus. This makes the fish challenging to sex until males colour up fully, typically upon reaching maturity in the aquarium.

Habitat

Stiphodon elegans inhabits clear, highly oxygenated, fast-flowing rainforest streams in coastal catchments across its Indo-Pacific range. The preferred microhabitat is the boulder-strewn riffle or cascade reach — sections of stream where water breaks white over exposed rock, maximising surface-to-air contact and keeping dissolved oxygen at near-saturation. Adults cling to the upper, sun-exposed faces of boulders where diatom biofilm and filamentous algae proliferate, grazing in the strongest current rather than sheltering from it. Substrates are typically clean gravel, cobble and bedrock swept free of silt.

These are short coastal streams: Stiphodon in general occupies the middle and upper reaches, above the tidal zone and often above waterfalls or rapids that form the downstream migration barrier. The water is fresh, with pH ranging roughly 6.0 to 8.0 and water temperature in the range of 75–82 °F at sea level, cooler at altitude. Hardness is moderate — the streams drain forested volcanic and metamorphic hills and carry little dissolved mineral load. There is no still or silty blackwater component to this species' ecology; it is strictly a rheophile of clean, oxygenated, sunlit lotic habitat.

Feeding

Stiphodon elegans is a primary consumer — an aufwuchs grazer with a trophic level of approximately 2.0. Adults feed almost exclusively by rasping the biofilm, diatom mats and fine epilithic algae that coat sun-washed boulders in fast water. The scraping teeth of the lower jaw are adapted for this mode of feeding, and the fish works across a rock face in short, methodical bursts, following the densest algal coverage. Juveniles fresh from the sea may include small microorganisms and organic detritus in their diet before shifting to the adult aufwuchs regime.

In the aquarium this specialisation is the central challenge of keeping the species. Stiphodon elegans starves in a bare or newly-set-up tank: it needs a mature, densely biofilm-covered rockscape where algal turf has had weeks or months to develop. A fast-growing green algal film on every boulder face is not a cosmetic problem to be cleaned away but the fish's primary food source. Supplementary feeding with soft green foods — blanched spinach or zucchini, algae wafers, Spirulina-based foods — and occasional small frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii can extend survival, but they do not substitute for a living biofilm. This is not a beginner fish and not a fish for a spotless, algae-free display.

Mating

Stiphodon elegans is amphidromous: adults court and spawn in fresh water, and the breeding system in that freshwater phase is one of male-defended territory and short-range courtship at the chosen spawning site. Males in breeding condition hold territories on boulder faces, intensifying their iridescent coloration to a high degree and performing lateral displays and fin-spreading towards rivals and ripe females alike. The male guides a receptive female to the underside or inner surface of a suitable rock or into a crevice, where spawning takes place.

Spawning itself follows the pattern common to the Sicydiinae: the male fertilises a clutch of small adhesive eggs which the female deposits on the rock surface, and the male remains at the site to guard them. In the wild these episodes occur in clear, well-oxygenated water with strong flow over the spawning substrate; whether the same level of flow is required for successful spawning in captivity is uncertain, since no Stiphodon species has been bred to the stage of raising larvae through their marine phase. Male colouration is the reliable cue for readiness to spawn.

Breeding

No species of Stiphodon has been successfully captive-bred through the full lifecycle, and Stiphodon elegans is no exception. The barrier is the larval phase: after hatching from the guarded adhesive eggs, the tiny, yolk-sac larvae are swept downstream by the current and carried to sea, where they spend weeks to months as pelagic marine plankton before metamorphosing into the post-larval stage. Those post-larvae then recruit back to coastal streams, where they climb upstream — sometimes scaling waterfalls using the pelvic sucker disc — to reach the adult habitat. Reproducing this marine pelagic phase in any practical captive setting is not currently achievable.

The practical consequence is that essentially all Stiphodon elegans in the aquarium trade are wild-caught, collected as juveniles or adults from their native streams. Aquarists keeping this species should not expect to breed it and should be aware of the conservation and sustainability implications of that wild-collection dependency. The male's egg-guarding behaviour may occasionally be observed in a mature, well-set-up aquarium with strong flow and suitable spawning substrate, but the resulting hatchlings will not survive in captivity. In the aquarium

Stiphodon elegans demands a specialised setup that prioritises current, oxygenation and mature biofilm above almost everything else. A tank of at least 23.5 in in length is the practical minimum; the entire setup should be oriented around a high-flow return — a powerhead or strong canister return directed along the length of the tank — with a bed of smooth boulders, cobble and flat rock that biofilm can colonise. The tank must be run for several weeks before introducing fish, and the lighting should be sufficient to grow green algae on the rock faces. Never add these gobies to a tank that has been recently cleaned of algae or one that has never developed a biofilm.

The water must be clean and highly oxygenated: efficient biological filtration, frequent partial water changes, and surface agitation are non-negotiable. Temperature should be maintained in the 75–82 °F range (lower end preferred) and pH 6.0–8.0 with moderate hardness. The tank should be tightly covered — these gobies are capable jumpers and will exploit any gap. Males are territorial with conspecifics and may spar; if more than one male is kept, ensure sufficient visual breaks between territories using rockwork. The species does not require brackish water as an adult.

Females are inconspicuous and rarely available; most imported fish are males. The fish does not harm plants but will graze any algae growing on them. It is peaceful with dissimilar, non-competitive tankmates but should not be housed with boisterous or algae-eating competitors (Gyrinocheilus, Crossocheilus, other aufwuchs-grazers) that would strip its food supply. This is a fish for the dedicated specialist — rewarding in a well-conceived stream-tank, but unforgiving of shortcuts.

Conservation

Stiphodon elegans is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment), reflecting a wide distribution across coastal Indo-Pacific catchments and the absence of evidence for a major range-wide decline. The species' amphidromous lifecycle, with its marine larval phase, provides some natural connectivity across catchments and may buffer it against localised habitat loss in individual streams.

Nonetheless, several pressures bear watching. Many Sicydiinae, including Stiphodon species, are sensitive to stream degradation — siltation, riparian deforestation, hydroelectric impoundment and water abstraction can break the upstream-migration corridor that adult and post-larval fish depend on, isolating populations or severing access to spawning habitat. Because no Stiphodon can be captive-bred, the aquarium trade is entirely dependent on wild-collected fish; at the individual stream level this can represent a localised extractive pressure. Responsible sourcing, correct tank husbandry to maximise the lifespan of collected individuals, and preference for suppliers who can demonstrate sustainable collection practices are the most practical hobbyist responses to that dependency.
