Stiphodon discotorquatus is a minute, amphidromous true goby — a member of the family Oxudercidae and the subfamily Sicydiinae — endemic to the remote Austral Islands of French Polynesia, where it clings to the rocks of clear, swift rainforest streams and rasps biofilm from stone. It is one of the smallest vertebrates in the Pacific island goby fauna, reaching barely 1 in in males. Like all Stiphodon it is critically dependent on the link between fresh water and the sea: adults spawn in rivers, but their hatchlings drift downstream to the open ocean to develop as marine plankton before the post-larvae clamber back up waterfalls and riffle-rocks on their fused pelvic sucker. That amphidromous life cycle places it firmly among the wild-collected specialists — it cannot be bred in an aquarium — and its extreme range restriction to two small islands with declining habitat has earned it a Critically Endangered rating on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Stiphodon discotorquatus was described by the American ichthyologist Robert E. Watson in 1995 from specimens collected in the Austral Islands, French Polynesia. It belongs to the cling-goby subfamily Sicydiinae, which sits within the family Oxudercidae — the current Catalog of Fishes placement for most of what was once called Gobiidae in a broad sense. The genus Stiphodon was erected much earlier and has historically been placed in various combinations; older literature may list species under Sicydium, Gobius, or simply as gobiids. For this atlas, the valid combination Stiphodon discotorquatus (Watson, 1995) is used throughout.

This is a true goby, and the clearest way to see that is the pelvic fins: in Stiphodon and all other true gobies the two pelvic fins are fused along their bases into a characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc — the structure that lets these fish anchor themselves against fast currents and haul themselves up waterfalls. Gobies overwhelmingly live in the sea; the freshwater Stiphodon species are a striking exception, having colonised Indo-Pacific island streams from the sea and retained the amphidromous life cycle of their marine ancestors. The species epithet discotorquatus is formed from Latin roots referring to a disc-like collar or neck marking — a reference to colour features noted in the original description.

Morphology

Stiphodon discotorquatus is a very small goby. Males reach a maximum standard length of approximately 1 in; females are slightly smaller, recorded to about 1 in SL. The body plan is the typical Stiphodon shape: cylindrical and slender toward the tail, with a somewhat flattened ventral profile suited to pressing against rock in fast water. The eyes sit high on the head and the mouth is subterminal, adapted for scraping biofilm off hard substrates rather than catching prey in open water.

As in other Stiphodon, males in breeding condition display vivid colouration — neon and iridescent markings that vary by species and distinguish Stiphodon among the gobies. The pelvic fins are fused into the characteristic sucker disc shared by all true gobies (Oxudercidae sensu lato), the key structural feature that separates this family from the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) whose pelvic fins remain separate. Sexual dimorphism in colour is pronounced: outside breeding condition males are more subdued, and females tend toward a cryptic, pale-banded pattern that affords camouflage on the streambed.

Habitat

In French Polynesia, Stiphodon discotorquatus inhabits clear, swift, well-oxygenated rainforest streams with rocky or gravelly bottoms, typically in lower- to mid-elevation channels close enough to the coast that the amphidromous return migration of post-larvae from the sea is feasible. The water is clean, fast-moving, warm-to-cool tropical fresh water — the antithesis of still, murky or organically loaded conditions. Rocky riffles and cascades, where oxygenation is highest and biofilm grows thickest on stone surfaces, are the preferred microhabitat.

The species is an extreme endemic: the confirmed range spans only the Tubuai Islands group within the Austral archipelago, specifically Rurutu and Tubuai — two small, remote volcanic islands with limited freshwater drainage. This tiny range, combined with the vulnerability of small island streams to deforestation and development, is the primary reason the species is assessed as Critically Endangered. It is not found in the typical hobbyist-accessible lowland rivers of mainland South-East Asia or New Guinea, and should never be kept as if it were a robust, widely distributed Rhinogobius.

Feeding

Stiphodon discotorquatus is an aufwuchs grazer. It feeds by rasping benthic biofilm — the complex community of diatoms, cyanobacteria, filamentous algae, micro-organisms and detritus that coats submerged rock surfaces in clear, sunlit, fast-flowing streams. The subterminal, scraping mouth is structurally adapted for this: it cannot effectively chase invertebrates in open water or sift soft sediment the way a mud-dwelling goby might.

This diet has a direct and often fatal consequence in captivity. A specimen placed into a freshly set-up or understocked aquarium with bare glass or rocks will find no biofilm and will starve, sometimes within days. The single biggest failure in keeping any Stiphodon is insufficient biofilm. A mature, well-lit tank where rocks have been colonised for months is the baseline; even then, supplementary foods — finely crumbled spirulina wafer, blanched courgette, nori, and very small frozen foods such as cyclops or baby brine shrimp — should be offered regularly. Stiphodon discotorquatus is emphatically not a flake-eating beginner fish.

Mating

Stiphodon discotorquatus follows the amphidromous Sicydiinae mating pattern. Sexually mature adults move to spawning areas within freshwater streams, where the male establishes and defends a small territory around a rock crevice or cave. Courtship involves the male displaying his breeding colouration — the neon markings for which the neon gobies are named — and performing lateral or fin-spread displays toward a ripe female.

Dimorphism makes sexing straightforward in ripe adults: males in breeding condition are conspicuously more colourful, while females are rounder-bodied and retain the cryptic banded pattern. The pair spawns within the shelter of the male's chosen site. Because the post-spawning larvae must reach the sea to complete their development, the nest site is invariably in a section of stream connected to open ocean — a crucial ecological constraint that ties this fish to coastal or near-coastal drainages.

Breeding

The male guards the adhesive egg mass in the freshwater nest site until hatching. The newly hatched larvae are tiny and immediately begin drifting downstream with the current, eventually passing through estuarine waters and out to sea, where they develop as marine plankton — feeding, growing, and metamorphosing in the open ocean beyond any freshwater system. This marine larval phase lasts weeks to months and is a non-negotiable step in the life cycle; no freshwater aquarium, however large, can substitute for it.

After metamorphosis, the post-larvae — now looking like miniature gobies — return to the coast and begin ascending rivers and streams, often scaling waterfalls and vertical rock faces using their fused pelvic sucker disc and oral disc in turn. This climbing ability is extraordinary and allows Stiphodon to colonise upstream reaches inaccessible to most fish. The consequence for the aquarist is unambiguous: Stiphodon discotorquatus cannot be bred in captivity. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught from French Polynesia, and their collection adds pressure to a population already assessed as Critically Endangered. There is no captive population and no established breeding protocol.

In the aquarium

Stiphodon discotorquatus is a highly specialised fish that should be kept only by experienced aquarists who can provide its exacting conditions and source a specimen obtained through well-documented, legal collection. Given its Critically Endangered status and entirely wild-caught supply, purchasing one carries ethical weight that the keeper should take seriously.

The tank must replicate the fast, highly oxygenated streams of Rurutu and Tubuai: strong, directed flow over a deep bed of smooth rounded rocks that have been pre-colonised by biofilm over many months (at least three to six months of maturation with good lighting is typical before the fish is added); clean, clear water with minimal dissolved organics; and warm-to-moderate tropical temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius range. No salt is needed or appropriate — this is a freshwater stream species, not a brackish-water goby. A tight-fitting lid is essential: like most small gobies, Stiphodon are capable jumpers and will exit a tank through any gap.

Males are territorial toward one another; a single male with one or two females in a dedicated nano-stream tank (23.5 in or longer with strong flow) is the practical setup. Tank mates should be small, non-boisterous species that will not compete for biofilm or outcompete the goby for food — small hillstream loaches or rheophilic danios from similar habitats can work. Do not house with fish that will displace it from its algae-grazing substrate. This is not a community-tank fish for the general hobbyist.

Conservation

Stiphodon discotorquatus is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 29 August 2011 and maintained in the 2022.2 update. The basis for this rating is its extremely restricted range — confined to two small islands in French Polynesia (Rurutu and Tubuai) — combined with ongoing habitat degradation. Principal threats recorded are land clearance for agriculture and settlement, pesticide run-off into streams, and dam or weir construction that blocks the amphidromous migration route between river and sea. A species whose entire global population fits within the drainage systems of two remote volcanic islands has almost no buffering capacity against such pressures.

The amphidromous life cycle creates a specific vulnerability: even if adult habitat in the streams is intact, a barrier at the river mouth — whether a low dam, a dry culvert, or heavily silted estuary — can prevent post-larvae from re-entering the river and recruiting to the adult population. Conservation of this species therefore requires protecting not just stream water quality but the hydrological connectivity between river and ocean. The aquarium trade relies entirely on wild collection; captive breeding does not exist. Given the CR status, any trade in this species deserves scrutiny and buyers should verify the legality and sustainability of their source before purchasing.
