Taxonomy & naming
Stiphodon multisquamus was described by Wu and Ni in 1985. The species belongs to the genus Stiphodon (family Oxudercidae, tribe Sicydiinae), a diverse group of small algae-grazing cling-gobies distributed from the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka east through Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and the islands of the Pacific. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places the species firmly within Stiphodon and the family Oxudercidae, the result of a series of molecular phylogenetic revisions that reorganised the old Gobiidae into Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae.
Stiphodon is a true goby, not a sleeper or gudgeon (Eleotridae), and that distinction matters: true gobies carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, while sleepers keep the fins separate. Stiphodon uses that sucker disc both to cling to rocks in fast-flowing current and to climb the waterfall faces it must ascend as post-larvae returning from the sea. The species name multisquamus derives from Latin multus (many) and squama (scale), most likely referring to an unusually high lateral-line or scale count noted in the original description — a character used to separate it from other Stiphodon congeners in the region.
Earlier regional literature may place East Asian Stiphodon species under generic synonyms such as Sicydium or reference them via older Japanese and Chinese ichthyological works; the current combination Stiphodon multisquamus is the accepted valid name.
Morphology
Stiphodon multisquamus is a small goby, likely reaching 1–2 in standard length as an adult — consistent with the general size range across the genus. The body is slender and slightly cylindrical, adapted to fast-current life, with a broadly rounded head and large eyes positioned high on the skull. The pelvic fins are fully fused into a prominent, cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the body, the defining synapomorphy of the Gobioidei and the character that instantly distinguishes a true goby from a sleeper or gudgeon.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced in Stiphodon, and this species almost certainly follows the genus-wide pattern: males display vivid, iridescent colouration — typically blues, greens, oranges, or reds along the flank and across the fins — while females are drabber, typically tan or brownish with faint lateral markings. The fins of breeding males are often elongated and more brightly patterned. The degree of colour varies with reproductive state, diet, and water quality, and a male in poor condition or a bare, biofilm-free tank will fade dramatically. Precise meristic counts (lateral-line scales, fin-ray counts) for this species are sparse in accessible literature outside the original 1985 description.
Habitat
Stiphodon multisquamus inhabits fast-flowing, clear, highly oxygenated freshwater streams — the characteristic habitat of the Stiphodon alliance. These are typically rocky or boulder-strewn mountain and hill streams with strong current, high dissolved oxygen, and excellent water clarity, usually draining coastal watersheds that empty relatively quickly to the sea. The substrate is clean rock and gravel with a rich growth of periphyton — diatoms, cyanobacteria, filamentous green algae, and other biofilm organisms — which forms the basis of the species' diet.
The natural range suggested by the original description and the genus distribution centres on East Asia, most likely Taiwan or southern China (Guangdong or Hainan). These streams are cool to warm depending on altitude and season, with good flow throughout the year. Water chemistry is typically soft to moderately hard and close to neutral pH, reflecting the granitic and volcanic catchments of coastal island and peninsular streams. This is emphatically not still, soft, blackwater habitat: still or stagnant conditions, high organic load, or low oxygen are unsuitable and quickly lethal.
Feeding
Stiphodon multisquamus is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps biofilm, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and fine filamentous algae directly from the surface of rocks using specialised molariform teeth on a disc-like mouth. This feeding strategy is one of the most distinctive in the freshwater goby world and is shared across the Sicydiinae; the fish actively moves across rock surfaces in the current, grazing the periphyton mat with a scraping motion.
In the aquarium, this dietary specialisation is the single greatest challenge. A tank without a mature, well-established biofilm is a death sentence: newly set-up tanks or tanks with low light and little algal growth will starve the fish regardless of what is offered. Keepers must establish a mature, algae-covered rockscape — ideally one conditioned for weeks or months in good light before the fish is introduced — and supplement with spirulina-based wafers, blanched greens (spinach, courgette, cucumber), and small amounts of high-quality prepared food. Live or frozen zooplankton (cyclops, small daphnia, baby brine shrimp) can be accepted as supplemental protein but are not the dietary foundation. This is not a flake-eating community fish.
Mating
Stiphodon multisquamus is amphidromous, which shapes every aspect of its reproductive biology. In the wild, reproductively mature adults reside in fresh water in the swift, rocky upper and middle reaches of coastal streams. A ripe male selects and defends a territory centred on a suitable spawning site — typically the underside of a rock, a crevice, or a small cave on the stream bed — and courts females with intense colour display and fin-spreading behaviour.
Colour plays a central role: the male's iridescent flank colouration and fin patterns are presumed honest signals of condition and genetic quality, and females choose among competing males. Because the eggs must be guarded in fresh water until hatching and the larvae then make a critical journey to the sea, site choice and male quality both have direct fitness consequences. In the aquarium, males will establish territories and display toward females, but the amphidromous life history means that reproductive behaviour can be observed without successful propagation.
Breeding
Stiphodon multisquamus breeds in fresh water: the female lays a clutch of small adhesive eggs on the underside of a rock or on a cave surface, and the male guards and fans them until hatching. Up to this point the biology parallels a resident cave-spawning goby. The crucial difference is what happens next: the newly hatched larvae are planktonic and extremely tiny. They are carried by stream current downstream and out to sea, where they develop as marine meroplanktonic larvae, feeding and growing in coastal waters for a period of weeks to months.
The post-larvae — at the elver stage — then seek out the mouths of freshwater streams and migrate upriver, using their pelvic sucker disc to climb even steep cascades and waterfalls in their ascent to adult habitat. This complete amphidromous life cycle means Stiphodon multisquamus cannot be bred in the home aquarium: even if spawning and egg-guarding occur, the larvae require the sea. All fish in the trade are wild-collected. Potential buyers should be aware of this, and the conservation implications of wild collection from narrow-range endemic populations deserve consideration.
In the aquarium
Stiphodon multisquamus is a specialist fish for experienced keepers. The fundamental requirements are a mature biofilm on rock surfaces (the more mature and varied the algal growth, the better), very strong water flow, high dissolved oxygen, and excellent filtration. A powerhead or circulation pump angled across a rock wall to produce a fast-laminar current is strongly recommended; these fish should never be kept in still or weakly aerated tanks. Water temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius suits most East Asian Stiphodon populations.
A biotope-style setup — smooth river rocks and boulders, sandy substrate, minimal planting, bright light to encourage biofilm growth, zero organic pollution — suits this species far better than a planted community tank. The tank must be covered: Stiphodon are jumpers and will find any gap. Males are territorial with each other and require adequate space and visual barriers (rocks stacked to create sight lines and separate territories) to coexist. Do not mix with boisterous fish that compete for biofilm or disturb foraging. Because all specimens are wild-caught, they should be quarantined carefully on arrival, offered varied food from the start, and watched closely for signs of stress or starvation — a thin-bellied fish with faded colour is a fish not eating. This is not a beginner species.
Conservation
Stiphodon multisquamus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). The species' apparent restriction to a limited stretch of East Asian coastal drainages — likely Taiwan, southern China, or both — is cause for background concern: narrow-range endemics in freshwater systems are inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, stream diversion, pollution, and sedimentation from upland land-use change.
The amphidromous life cycle, while conferring some resilience through the marine larval phase (post-larvae can recruit from a wide coastal area), also means that adults cannot disperse overland between catchments and that stream connectivity from mountain to coast is essential. Dams and weirs that interrupt the upstream migration of returning post-larvae can extirpate local populations even if the stream itself remains clean. Because the species cannot be captive-bred, the aquarium trade depends entirely on wild collection, adding a further pressure that is difficult to quantify in the absence of population data. Keepers are encouraged to source fish from reputable suppliers who work with sustainable collecting operations, and to report any locality data they receive with their specimens to relevant ichthyological databases.
