Stiphodon surrufus, the Bird Song Goby, is a dwarf true goby — a member of the family Oxudercidae and the subfamily Sicydiinae — native to swift, rocky coastal streams in the Philippines, Japan and Sulawesi. Like all true gobies it carries its pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, the character that instantly separates it from the sleepers and gudgeons; and like the vast majority of its order it comes from a world that is overwhelmingly marine. This particular species reaches fresh water, living above waterfalls in clear, fast, highly oxygenated highland streams — but it is bound to the sea at the larval stage, making it amphidromous and essentially impossible to breed in captivity. What it offers instead is a flash of colour that is almost impossible for a fish this small: mature males carry vivid red-orange stripes and a warm posterior suffusion on a body barely 1 in long, while females are pale with neat dark lateral markings. The species is rarely exported, collected mainly as bycatch, and demands a mature biotope of biofilm-covered rock and fast, cool, clean water — not a fish for the unprepared.

Taxonomy & naming

Stiphodon surrufus was described in 1995 by Watson and Kottelat from material collected at Lagu Lagu Creek on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. It belongs to the subfamily Sicydiinae within the family Oxudercidae — the cling-gobies, a group of small, stream-adapted rheophilic gobies distributed across the Indo-Pacific island arc from southern Japan and the Philippines south and east through Indonesia, New Guinea and into the Pacific islands. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid genus and species; the global taxonomic backbone maintained by GBIF confirms the placement in Oxudercidae and Sicydiinae.

Stiphodon is a true goby, not a gudgeon or sleeper, and carries the pelvic fins fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the Gobiiformes in their narrow sense. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group — the freshwater species are the exception — and Stiphodon surrufus underscores that heritage: adults live in fresh water, but the larvae must complete their early development in the sea before returning upriver. Older literature sometimes placed cling-gobies under the genus Sicydium or within the now-expanded Gobiidae before the family was reorganised into Oxudercidae; the current combination Stiphodon surrufus Watson and Kottelat, 1995 is the valid one.

The species epithet surrufus is Latin for 'somewhat reddish' or 'reddish beneath', a direct reference to the striking red-orange colouration of the male. The common name Bird Song Goby, noted by Seriously Fish, has no obvious etymological link to the fish's biology and appears to be a vernacular trade name.

Morphology

Stiphodon surrufus is a miniature goby: the maximum recorded standard length is 1 in (FishBase), with aquarium specimens typically reaching 1–1.5 in SL. Even within the genus Stiphodon, which contains some of the smallest gobies in the world, this places surrufus among the dwarfs. The body is cylindrical and slightly depressed anteriorly, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle — the classic stream-goby profile built for clinging to rock in fast flow.

Sexual dimorphism is strong. Males develop brilliant red-orange stripes running longitudinally across the body, and the posterior portion of the body — from roughly the mid-flank to the caudal base — is suffused with the same warm reddish hue, giving the fish a quality quite disproportionate to its size. The unpaired fins of breeding males intensify in colour. Females are conspicuously plainer: the body is pale, creamy or whitish, with a dark lateral stripe and scattered dark spots providing the patterning. The contrast between the sexes is one of the most striking in the genus.

As in all Sicydiinae, the pelvic fins are fused into a well-developed adhesive disc — the sucker that allows the fish to cling to smooth rock surfaces against strong current, and that the post-larvae use to climb waterfalls and rock faces on their upstream migration after returning from the sea. The teeth are regenerative and adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates.

Habitat

Stiphodon surrufus is known from short, steep, high-energy coastal streams on tropical volcanic islands. The type locality, Lagu Lagu Creek on Leyte in the Philippines, is characteristic: a fast-flowing bedrock stream draining a volcanic landscape, with boulder and rock substrate, strong current, and clear, highly oxygenated water. Seriously Fish records the species from above waterfalls — a habitat feature shared by many Sicydiinae, which use the waterfalls both as a barrier against downstream predators and as a reference point on their post-larval upstream migration.

The species has been recorded from Leyte in the Philippines, from Okinawa and Yaku Island in Japan, and — as first and recurrent records published in the scientific literature — from Sulawesi in Indonesia, extending the known range and confirming it as naturally rare across its distribution rather than simply uncollected. Recommended aquarium water parameters from experienced keepers are 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate hardness (36–215 ppm), with a current rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour. The habitat is strictly fresh water, though FishBase notes the species can also tolerate brackish water in transitional coastal zones during dispersal.

This is an upland, rheophilic fish: it does not inhabit slow, murky, warm lowland rivers, blackwater swamps or soft acidic leaf-litter streams. The correct analogy is a clean mountain torrent running over bare rock, with the biofilm layer on those rocks forming the entire food base.

Feeding

Stiphodon surrufus is a specialised aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it rasps diatoms, fine algae and microbial biofilm from the surface of boulders and rock in fast, clear, sunlit stream sections, using its regenerative, spatulate teeth adapted for this purpose. This diet is highly specific and the fish cannot be maintained on standard prepared flake or pellet foods alone.

In the aquarium, the species requires a tank that has been running long enough to develop a substantial coating of biofilm and soft algae on all rock surfaces — typically at least two to three months of maturation under good lighting. A bare or newly set-up tank will cause the fish to starve within weeks regardless of how much supplementary food is offered. Seriously Fish notes that some specimens will accept small frozen foods such as bloodworm sparingly, and these can be used to supplement the biofilm base, but the biofilm is not supplemental — it is the primary food source and its absence is the single most common cause of death in captive specimens. Soft green vegetables such as blanched spinach or courgette, and specialist algae wafers placed near the rocks, can assist but do not replace live biofilm. Feeding this fish correctly is the central challenge of keeping it.

Mating

Stiphodon surrufus is amphidromous. Adults live and breed in fresh water, and courtship and spawning take place within the stream habitat the fish inhabits as adults. Males are territorial and display to females using their vivid red-orange colouration; the colour intensifies during courtship. Females may produce up to 10,000 eggs per spawn — a high fecundity figure consistent with the larval mortality expected when tiny hatchlings must survive open-ocean dispersal.

The male selects and defends a spawning site on a hard substrate — a rock face, a cave beneath a boulder, or a crevice — and courts ripe females there. Once a female spawns, the adhesive eggs are deposited on the cleaned rock surface and the male takes over their care. The investment by the female ends at spawning; the male takes sole charge of the eggs until hatching. The whole spawning event takes place in fresh water, but what follows places this species firmly in the amphidromous life-history category.

Breeding

Stiphodon surrufus cannot be bred in captivity under normal aquarium conditions, and hobbyists should be honest with themselves about this. After hatching, the tiny larvae are swept downstream by the current, enter the sea, and spend weeks to months developing as marine plankton before returning to the coast as post-larvae. The post-larvae then migrate upstream, using their pelvic sucker disc to climb waterfalls and negotiate bare rock faces — a journey that is one of the more remarkable feats in freshwater biology but is entirely impossible to replicate in an aquarium.

No captive breeding of Stiphodon surrufus has been documented. The male's role in guarding the adhesive eggs on rock until they hatch is real parental care, but the subsequent marine larval phase means that even if eggs were obtained in captivity the larvae would require a marine rearing environment, specialist live feeds and considerable expertise to raise — well beyond the equipment of any practical home aquarium. All specimens in the trade are wild-collected, typically as bycatch in nets targeting other stream species on their native islands. This limits the supply and means the species is rarely available. Buyers should be aware of this and factor the wild-caught origin into their husbandry expectations.

In the aquarium

Stiphodon surrufus is a demanding, specialist fish best suited to experienced keepers who can provide the specific conditions it requires. The minimum viable setup is a tank of at least 15 US gal with strong, well-oxygenated flow — a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour — a substrate of smooth boulders and flat rocks, and most critically a mature biofilm layer covering all rock surfaces. The tank must be running for several months under good illumination before the fish is introduced; without established biofilm the fish will starve even in apparently healthy water.

Water quality must be consistently high: clean, well-oxygenated, and within the temperature range of 72–82 °F. The fish is naturally found above waterfalls and is not tolerant of the organic loads that community fish housing typically accumulates. A species-only or carefully managed biotope setup is strongly recommended. Stiphodon surrufus is a surprisingly social goby by the standards of the genus — Seriously Fish notes that it rests in small groups on smooth stones, facing the current together — so a small group of three to five fish is preferable to a single specimen, though males may compete for the best flow positions.

A tight-fitting lid is essential: the fish is an accomplished climber and will use the same abilities that allow post-larvae to scale waterfalls to escape through any opening. It is not a community fish in the traditional sense and should not be housed with boisterous or large tankmates. The trade in this species is very limited and supply is sporadic; most fish available have been collected as bycatch in the Philippines or Japan, and the price and rarity reflect that. It rewards the effort with a display of colour — the males in particular — that is exceptional for a fish under 1.5 in.

Conservation

Stiphodon surrufus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 20 January 2019). The LC assessment reflects a distribution across multiple island groups — the Philippines, Japan and Sulawesi — rather than strict single-locality endemism, and a species assessed as 'naturally rare' by researchers documenting its Sulawesi records rather than one in active decline.

The Sulawesi records are telling in conservation terms: a 2022 publication in the peer-reviewed literature reported the first and recurrent records of the species from Sulawesi, describing it as 'naturally rare' in that part of its range. This suggests a species that is genuinely sparse across its distribution rather than formerly abundant and now depleted. The pressures facing freshwater stream gobies in the Indo-Pacific are well-documented: dam construction, water extraction from small coastal streams, sedimentation from deforestation, and pollution all degrade the clear, fast-flowing, boulder-strewn habitat this species requires. As an amphidromous species that must move between fresh water and the sea, barriers to that migration — weirs, culverts, concrete-lined channels — can fragment populations even where the habitat itself appears intact.

Because Stiphodon surrufus cannot be bred in captivity, the aquarium trade relies entirely on wild-collected specimens. Given how rarely the species appears in trade (typically as bycatch rather than a target species), this pressure is currently low; however, if demand were to increase, the wild-collection of an amphidromous goby from restricted island stream habitats would warrant scrutiny.
