Anablepsoides limoncochae is a small, non-annual South American rivuline killifish reaching up to 3 in in total length, native to the Amazon River basin. Unlike its annual cousins that bury drought-resistant eggs in seasonal pools, this species inhabits more permanent or near-permanent freshwater habitats and breeds continuously year-round as a mop or plant spawner, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020, it remains a modestly uncommon species in the hobby, valued by killifish specialists for its manageable size and obliging breeding behaviour.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides limoncochae was described by the Dutch ichthyologist J. J. Hoedeman in 1962, originally placed in the large catch-all genus Rivulus. The species epithet limoncochae refers to the type locality; the parenthetical authority notation indicates that the name has been transferred out of its original genus since description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the current valid combination as Anablepsoides limoncochae (Hoedeman, 1962), placing it within the genus Anablepsoides — the South American clade of rivulines that was split out of the polyphyletic Rivulus following molecular phylogenetic work in the 2000s and formalised by Huber (2017).

Anablepsoides is a large genus encompassing dozens of species distributed across the Amazon basin and the Guianas. The limoncochae species sits within the broader South American rivuline assemblage (family Rivulidae), a group defined by their laterally compressed bodies, the placement of the dorsal fin well back along the body, and a diversity of reproductive strategies ranging from obligate annual soil-spawning to the non-annual, continuous plant-spawning mode seen in this species. Older literature and hobbyist sources frequently retain the name Rivulus limoncochae, so both names may appear in aquarium trade records.

Morphology

This is a slender, laterally compressed killifish with the characteristic rivuline body plan: a pointed snout, an upturned mouth positioned for surface feeding, and a dorsal fin set well back on the body almost opposite the anal fin — an arrangement that gives South American rivulines a distinctive silhouette compared with African killifish groups. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in, though males in typical aquarium condition are often somewhat smaller.

Colouration in males is composed of densely packed scales bearing reddish-brown to orange pigment overlaid with iridescent blue-green or turquoise spotting and flecking on the flanks, typical of Anablepsoides. Females are cryptically coloured, displaying a pale brownish body with reduced patterning and frequently showing the small dark caudal spot — sometimes called the rivuline spot or ocellus — common to many females in this family. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males carry full colour, unpaired fins with extensions, and broader bodies across the shoulder region; females are slimmer and muted in hue.

Habitat

Anablepsoides limoncochae is distributed within the Amazon River basin of South America. FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory fish with a tropical temperature preference, recorded in the range 75–82 °F. The non-annual designation is key: unlike the Neotropical killifish that colonise temporary savannah ponds and dry up with them each year, A. limoncochae occupies habitats that retain water through dry periods — shaded forest streams, drainage ditches, slow-flowing creeks, and pond margins with aquatic or emergent vegetation.

Such environments are typically soft and slightly acidic, as is common across much of the Amazon basin where organic leaf litter and the absence of calcareous bedrock drive pH down. The species, like many South American rivulines, likely favours shallow water with surface cover — overhanging grasses, floating root mats, and fine-leaved aquatic plants — that provides refuge from aerial and aquatic predators and the attachment sites its adhesive eggs require.

Feeding

In the wild, Anablepsoides limoncochae feeds primarily on small invertebrates taken at or near the water surface, including terrestrial and aquatic insects, mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, and worms. The upturned mouth confirms a strong orientation toward surface or near-surface prey, a feeding niche shared with many South American rivulines that exploit the productive insect-fall layer at the water surface in shaded forest streams.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to offered live and frozen foods. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), tubifex, and mosquito larvae are all accepted with enthusiasm. A varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates keeps colour and condition at their peak; dried prepared foods may be taken once the fish is well settled but should not form the dietary staple. Regular small feedings of live prey are especially important when conditioning a pair for spawning.

Mating

Anablepsoides limoncochae is a non-annual killifish that spawns continuously throughout adult life when conditions are suitable, rather than synchronising reproduction with seasonal rainfall cycles. The mating system is typical of non-annual Anablepsoides: a dominant male courts one or more females through lateral displays, flaring his unpaired fins to expose colouration. Receptive females submit to close-paired spawning events in which a single egg is deposited at each embrace.

Eggs are small, adhesive, and are attached to fine-leaved aquatic plants, Java moss, spawning mops, or roots near the water surface or substrate. The It Rains Fishes hobbyist documentation records a typical production of 5–15 eggs per day from a well-conditioned pair given a rich diet of live foods. Unlike annual killifish, there is no courtship chase into substrate; the spawning event is brief, quiet, and repeated daily over weeks to months rather than in concentrated mass-spawning episodes.

Breeding

Eggs of Anablepsoides limoncochae incubate in water at ambient temperature without diapause — there is no requirement for drying, soil burial, or simulated dry-season conditions that characterises annual killifish breeding. Eggs attached to plant or mop material can be left in situ or transferred to a shallow hatching container with clean, slightly acidic water. Incubation duration at 75–79 °F is typically one to two weeks, consistent with other non-annual Anablepsoides at comparable temperatures.

Fry are relatively large at hatching and capable of accepting Artemia nauplii from day one, making early rearing straightforward compared with the tiny fry of some annual species. Because adults will readily consume eggs and fry, removing spawning mops or transferring eggs promptly improves yield. Growing juveniles do best with frequent small feeds and regular partial water changes to maintain water quality; the species is not particularly demanding but does not tolerate accumulation of nitrogenous waste well. Sexual maturity is reached within a few months under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides limoncochae is noted in the FishBase literature as a species that can be difficult to maintain in aquarium conditions, a characterisation that likely reflects its requirement for stable, clean, well-oxygenated water rather than any extreme chemistry demands. The species does best in a dedicated species aquarium or a tank housing only other small, non-aggressive rivulines of similar size. Males can be territorial with one another; a ratio of one male to two or more females, with adequate sight-line breaks from floating plants and fine-leaved vegetation, reduces aggression.

Water temperature of 75–82 °F and a pH that remains stable in the soft, slightly acidic to neutral range suits the species well, in keeping with its Amazonian distribution. Regular partial water changes are more important than achieving any specific chemistry target. A planted or well-decorated tank with subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and floating cover will bring out the best colouration in males and encourage spawning activity. The tank must be tightly covered: like all killifish, A. limoncochae is a capable jumper.

For hobbyists with prior killifish experience, the species is a rewarding non-annual that produces eggs year-round without the logistical demands of peat storage and drying. It is primarily a specialist fish within organised killifish societies rather than a mainstream aquarium species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides limoncochae as Least Concern (LC) in December 2020. This rating reflects a combination of the species' distribution within the extensive Amazon basin and the absence of evidence of major population decline. Unlike single-locality endemic killifish — many of which rank among the most acutely threatened freshwater fishes on Earth — A. limoncochae benefits from the relative continuity of its Amazonian watershed habitat.

Nevertheless, the broader Amazon basin faces escalating anthropogenic pressure. Deforestation of riparian corridors removes the shading and leaf litter that structure the microhabitats many rivulines depend on. Agricultural drainage, channelisation of streams, and water abstraction can eliminate the shallow, vegetated margins these fish occupy even when main-channel water bodies persist. The introduction of invasive fishes, including Gambusia species (mosquitofish) deployed across the tropics for mosquito control, poses a documented threat to surface-layer-feeding killifish through direct predation on fry and competition for invertebrate prey. Continued monitoring of population connectivity across the Amazon basin will be necessary to confirm the Least Concern status remains appropriate as land-use change intensifies.
