A modest but characterful rivuline from the Amazon basin, Anablepsoides micropus reaches 3 in total length and inhabits the forest streams and pools of Brazil where it has been collected sporadically since Steindachner first described it in 1863. A non-annual plant-spawner, it lays small clutches of adhesive amber eggs on floating mops or fine-leaved vegetation over many weeks, and in captivity rewards patient keepers with up to three years of life — long for a killifish. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020, it is known in the hobby mainly through specialist killi clubs, where it has circulated under its older name Rivulus micropus.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides micropus was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1863 as Fundulus micropus, on the basis of material from the Amazon basin of Brazil. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original genus. It passed through Rivulus — the large catch-all rivuline genus under which the hobby has long known it as Rivulus micropus — and now sits in Anablepsoides, a genus erected to accommodate a clade of Amazonian and Guianan rivulines that molecular and morphological work separated from true Rivulus. The valid combination, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Anablepsoides micropus (Steindachner, 1863).

The genus-level picture remained contested through the early 2010s. Costa (2011) and Huber (2012) offered competing arrangements for the former Rivulus aggregate, and not all hobbyist databases had fully adopted the Anablepsoides name as of the mid-2020s — the American Killifish Association species page still lists the fish under the heading Rivulus micropus. For practical purposes the two names refer to the same fish; Anablepsoides micropus is the current Catalog of Fishes treatment and should be used in formal contexts.

The specific epithet micropus is Latin for 'small-footed' (from Greek mikros, small, and pous, foot), a reference recorded in the original description — possibly alluding to the small pectoral or pelvic fins relative to the body, though Steindachner's precise intent is not always elaborated in his brief 19th-century diagnoses.

Morphology

Anablepsoides micropus is a slender, somewhat cylindrical rivuline reaching a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase), with hobbyist sources typically reporting adults at around 2.5 in. The body plan is typical of the genus: a slightly flattened dorsal profile, a pointed snout, and a rounded caudal fin. Meristics recorded for the species are dorsal rays 8, anal rays 14, and approximately 41 lateral-line scales — a useful suite for distinguishing it from similar rivulines in the field or museum.

Colouration is not extensively described in freely available sources, but Anablepsoides species in general show sexually dimorphic patterning, with males displaying more vivid markings — often rows of red or orange spots or horizontal striping on the flanks — while females are plainer and brownish. Eggs are described as amber-coloured and approximately 0.5 in in diameter, consistent with the genus.

Sexual dimorphism is typical for the group: males are more brightly coloured and slightly slimmer; females are deeper-bodied when gravid and subdued in colour. The species is not large enough to be confused with the bigger South American rivulines, and its meristic counts help separate it from close relatives in sympatry.

Habitat

The species is native to the Amazon River basin in Brazil — the geographic range given by FishBase. Precise collection localities are not elaborated in widely available sources, but Amazonian rivulines of this genus typically occupy the shallow margins of forest streams, flooded leaf-litter pools, small tributaries, and still or slowly flowing water bodies in lowland rainforest. Water in these habitats is often warm, slightly acidic, and soft, though the precise chemistry at collection points for this species is not well documented beyond a temperature range of 75–82 °F recorded on FishBase.

Non-annual rivulines such as A. micropus are associated with permanent or semi-permanent water rather than the seasonal pools exploited by annual killifish. The forest canopy provides shade, fallen leaves create structural complexity and tannin-stained water, and emergent or floating vegetation at the surface offers attachment points for eggs. These conditions — warm, clear to lightly tannin-stained, well-structured shallow water — define what the species requires both in the wild and in captivity.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, occupying the lower to mid-water column in tropical freshwater, with a resilience rating of High — reflecting the short generation time and rapid reproductive output typical of killifish.

Feeding

Like most rivulines, Anablepsoides micropus is a generalist predator of small invertebrates. In its natural Amazonian forest-stream habitat it would encounter a variety of prey items: small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall to the water surface. The relatively small body size limits prey to correspondingly small organisms.

In captivity the species is straightforwardly maintained on a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar small-to-medium live or frozen foods. Fry are reported to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii from first feeding, which simplifies rearing. Dried or granular foods can supplement the diet but should not form the exclusive ration for a small carnivore accustomed to moving prey.

Mating

Anablepsoides micropus is a non-annual killifish, meaning it does not follow the annual cycle of desiccation, diapause, and rehydration that defines the annual killifish lineages. Instead it is a plant or mop spawner: pairs release small numbers of adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved vegetation, floating plant roots, or artificial spawning mops over an extended period rather than depositing a single clutch in substrate.

Spawning is described as a daily or near-daily activity in conditioned pairs, with each session yielding roughly 5–15 eggs. The eggs are adhesive, amber-coloured, and approximately 0.5 in in diameter. The male courts the female with typical rivuline displays — spreading fins, positioning beside or beneath her — and the pair spawn in brief embraces near vegetation or a mop. This sustained, low-level reproductive output is characteristic of non-annual killies and reflects their adaptation to permanent water where eggs can incubate safely over weeks without risk of the habitat drying.

Maturation takes approximately four to five months in captivity at optimal temperatures, and the species can live up to three years under aquarium conditions — a notably long lifespan for a killifish and a further hallmark of the non-annual life history.

Breeding

The breeding method is straightforward and well within the reach of beginner killifish keepers. Pairs or trios are kept in small tanks furnished with floating synthetic spawning mops or clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss at the surface. Spawning mops are checked every few days and any eggs removed and incubated separately — either floating in shallow water with a drop of antifungal agent (acriflavine is recommended in hobbyist sources) or, for extra security, placed in moist peat moss or a damp, dark container. Incubation in water at around 75–79 °F takes approximately 14 days.

Fry are small at hatching but large enough to accept Artemia nauplii immediately, simplifying rearing considerably compared with the smaller-fry annual species that require infusoria or paramecia first. Growth is relatively steady and the young fish reach adult size and sexual maturity in about four to five months. Because spawning is continuous over weeks and the eggs are laid in small daily batches rather than a single clutch, the keeper accumulates fry steadily rather than managing a single large cohort.

The species is not reported to show strong aggression between males, but in small tanks a dominant male may harass a subdued female. Providing extra visual cover or a second female to distribute attention is standard advice for small mop-spawning rivulines.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides micropus is well suited to a small dedicated killifish setup. A pair or trio can be maintained comfortably in a 10 US gal tank with a secure lid (killies are capable jumpers) and minimal décor: a dark substrate, a floating mop, and perhaps a few stems of fine-leaved plants. Dim lighting suits the species and shows its colours to best advantage; a thick surface cover of floating plants doubles as spawning habitat and reduces the fish's tendency to jump.

Water temperature of 75–82 °F and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.5 based on its Amazon basin origin, though precise chemistry tolerances are not extensively documented for this species) are appropriate starting parameters. Regular partial water changes and efficient filtration maintain the clean, stable conditions the species appreciates. A small sponge filter avoids the strong current that would be inappropriate for a fish from still forest pools.

The species is not commercially common and is maintained mainly within specialist killi hobby circles, particularly through club fish-of-the-month distributions and swaps. It is a rewarding fish for the patient keeper: the daily egg collection, the steady appearance of fry, and the species' three-year captive lifespan give it a different character from the intense but brief annual killifish experience.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides micropus as Least Concern in December 2020, an assessment reflected in FishBase and confirmed by the American Killifish Association. The broad Amazon basin distribution and high reproductive resilience (FishBase estimates a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months) underpin the LC status. The species is not among the narrowly endemic single-locality killies that face the most acute conservation risk.

Nonetheless, the broader Amazon basin context is not without concern. Deforestation, agricultural run-off, and river engineering affect the lowland forest streams and pools that rivulines of this type depend on. The Brazilian Amazon has faced sustained pressure from land-use change, and the shallow, vegetated habitats used by small forest killifish are among those most vulnerable to siltation, chemical run-off, and the loss of canopy shade. The IUCN assessment does not identify these as currently threatening population viability for this species, but the trajectory of habitat loss in Amazonia merits monitoring.

The species' presence in the killifish hobby provides a modest buffer: captive populations maintained by specialist clubs give the fish a presence outside its native range and could in principle support conservation efforts if wild populations ever came under pressure, though no formal conservation programme exists for it at present.
