Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion striatum was described by the Belgian zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911 on the basis of material collected from the Abanga River, a tributary of the Ogooué (Ogowe) system in what is now northwestern Gabon. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses, indicating that Boulenger originally placed the species in a different genus and that the name has since been moved to Aphyosemion. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphyosemion striatum (Boulenger, 1911).
Within Aphyosemion, the species belongs to the informal grouping Class 8 (Mesaphyosemion) in the classification system employed by killifish societies, reflecting a clade of moderate-sized, non-annual West African species. The American Killifish Association documents at least 48 distinct location codes (collection strains) across the species' range in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, including strains from Libreville, Lambaréné, Cap Estérias, and numerous other localities — a testament to the intense strain-documentation culture that characterises the killifish hobby and the genuine morphological variation present across the range.
The specific epithet striatum is Latin for 'striped', a direct reference to the prominent red longitudinal stripes that run along the flanks of males and constitute the species' most immediately recognisable feature.
Morphology
Aphyosemion striatum is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching a maximum total length of around 2.5 in (FishBase), with most males in aquaria measuring 2 in and females slightly smaller. The body profile is typical of the genus: somewhat elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, and a rounded to slightly lyre-shaped caudal fin in males.
Males are conspicuously more colourful than females. The flanks are suffused with blue-green to turquoise iridescence overlaid with multiple red to brick-red horizontal stripes that run from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle — the pattern that gives the species its common name. The fins are typically blue with red spotting or edging; the dorsal and caudal fins in particular display red dotting and, in well-conditioned males, may show extension of the fin rays. Females are considerably plainer, presenting a brownish to olive-buff body with minimal red markings and transparent to lightly coloured fins, a degree of sexual dimorphism entirely typical of the Aphyosemion genus.
Colouration varies geographically across the 48-plus documented collection localities, and hobbyists maintain strains under specific location codes to preserve these regional differences. The differences between strains are generally in the intensity and pattern detail of the red striping and the extent of fin colouration rather than in any gross morphological character.
Habitat
The native range of Aphyosemion striatum covers the coastal rainforest zone of northwestern Gabon and adjacent Equatorial Guinea. FishBase records its distribution across the lower Mitémele River (Equatorial Guinea) and the Mbei, Komo, Gabon, Abanga, and lower Ogooué river drainages in Gabon. Seriously Fish confirms the type locality as the Abanga River within the Ogooué system. The total footprint is geographically compact — a band of lowland drainages lying between the Atlantic coast and the interior forest.
Within these drainages the species inhabits perennial lowland rainforest streams, swamp pools, and slow-moving brooks — permanently water-filled habitats, not the seasonal or ephemeral pools associated with annual killifish. This is a key ecological distinction: the forest provides year-round shade, dense leaf litter, and abundant emergent and overhanging vegetation, and the water remains in place even in the dry season. FishBase records it as occurring 'in swamps, brooks and small streams in coastal rainforest'.
Water chemistry at collection sites is soft and mildly acidic to near-neutral. FishBase gives pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness 5–12 dH, with temperatures in the range 70–73 °F. Seriously Fish broadens the documented range slightly to 68–79 °F and pH 6.5–7.5, with hardness of 54–215 ppm — the upper end of that hardness range likely reflects variation across sites rather than optimal conditions for the species. The soft, tannin-tinged water of shaded forest streams is the characteristic environment.
Feeding
In the wild Aphyosemion striatum feeds on small invertebrates and insects at or near the water surface and in the water column — the upturned mouth is well adapted to intercepting terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, as well as small aquatic invertebrates such as zooplankton and mosquito larvae. This insectivore-dominated diet is typical of the forest-stream Aphyosemion species.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and similar invertebrate items are all taken eagerly. Seriously Fish notes that it also accepts flake food, which is useful for day-to-day maintenance, though conditioning for breeding is generally achieved with regular live or frozen offerings. Feeding portions should be kept to small amounts two to three times daily; like most small killifish, it does best with frequent small meals rather than infrequent large ones. Because it is a surface-to-mid-water feeder, foods that sink rapidly to the substrate before being consumed are less efficient than floating or slow-sinking alternatives.
Mating
Aphyosemion striatum is a non-annual killifish and its reproductive behaviour reflects the permanent-water habitat it occupies. There is no compressed annual breeding sprint, no diapause, and no peat-spawning: instead, a conditioned pair or small group spawns repeatedly and persistently over weeks, depositing individual or small batches of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, Java moss, or the fibres of a floating spawning mop near the surface or substrate.
Courtship in Aphyosemion species follows the typical pattern for the genus: the male displays laterally to the female, erecting his fins and intensifying his colouration to show the red striping to maximum effect. When a receptive female approaches, the pair press close together and release eggs and sperm simultaneously, the eggs adhering immediately to the nearest plant material or mop fibre. Spawning takes place over an extended period — Seriously Fish records production of 20–30 eggs per day across a breeding period of roughly two weeks — so the total egg count per pair can be substantial without any single dramatic spawning event.
Males can be mildly persistent in courtship and should not be kept with a single female without adequate cover; the standard approach in the hobby is to run one male with two females, or to use a colony setup in a larger, well-planted tank.
Breeding
Because Aphyosemion striatum is a non-annual plant-spawner, its eggs are incubated in water rather than in moist peat undergoing diapause. Seriously Fish reports an incubation period of 10–14 days when eggs are left in the tank or transferred to shallow water, or approximately 18 days when peat moss is used as an incubation medium — a technique borrowed from annual killifish husbandry that some hobbyists apply here for practicality rather than necessity. There is no diapause; eggs simply develop at a steady pace determined by temperature.
Fry are very small on hatching and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria, micro-worms, or commercial fry powder sized for tiny larvae in the first days, with baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) introduced as the fry grow. Growth rate is reasonable under good conditions and the species can reach sexual maturity well within its first year. The eggs themselves are somewhat adhesive, attaching to plant leaves, spawning mop fibres, or fine substrate. In the aquarium
Aphyosemion striatum has been maintained and bred in captivity since 1961 and is one of the most established African killifish in the hobby — a species with a deep body of practical experience behind it. It is widely regarded as an excellent entry point to Aphyosemion keeping: undemanding about water chemistry within the soft, slightly acidic range it occupies in nature, peaceful with similarly sized non-aggressive tankmates, and willing to accept a variety of foods including prepared diets.
A small, well-planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or trio. Dark substrate and background, subdued lighting, floating plants, and driftwood create a setting close to the shaded forest-stream environment and also encourage bolder behaviour in the fish — Aquarium Glaser notes that the species is calmer and displays better colouration in darker setups. The tank must be tightly covered without exception: Aphyosemion striatum is an accomplished jumper and will find any gap in the lid. Temperature of 70–75 °F is recommended for long-term maintenance (the lower part of the documented range prolongs the non-annual lifespan of two to three years); higher temperatures up to around 79–82 °F are tolerated but accelerate ageing. Water pH should be kept below 7.5, ideally in the 6.5–7.0 range, and hardness should be moderate to soft.
As a small killifish it is compatible with other peaceful small fish — small tetras, miniature barbs, small labyrinth fish, and small catfish — but should not be combined with large, boisterous, or fin-nipping species. Multiple males together can be maintained in a spacious, well-furnished tank, though they will display to one another and occasional brief chases are normal. For hobbyists interested in strain preservation, maintaining and documenting collection-locality provenance is encouraged by the killifish societies, given the 48 or more location codes documented for this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion striatum as Least Concern (LC) in 2009 (assessor: Moelants, T.). The range, while geographically compact — concentrated in the coastal rainforest drainages of northwestern Gabon and the lower Mitémele system in Equatorial Guinea — was considered sufficiently broad and the population sufficiently stable at the time of assessment to warrant the LC category.
The species' habitat, lowland coastal rainforest streams and swamps in the Ogooué basin, faces the pressures common to equatorial African forest zones: incremental deforestation and land conversion, expansion of agriculture and plantation forestry, and the associated sedimentation and run-off that degrade small streams and swamp habitats. These pressures are ongoing but had not, at the time of the 2009 assessment, driven the species to a threshold requiring a threatened listing. Because Aphyosemion striatum is a non-annual fish of permanent-water habitats, it is somewhat less vulnerable to the sudden, complete desiccation events that can locally extirpate annual killifish populations; nonetheless, the permanent streams and swamps it depends upon can be degraded by deforestation even without drying completely.
The species is well established in cultivation across Europe, North America, and Asia, with numerous location strains maintained by killifish hobbyist societies. This captive presence does not substitute for wild population security, but it does mean the hobby holds significant ex-situ material should conservation needs arise in future.
