Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion riggenbachi was described by Ernst Ahl in 1924, with the authority rendered in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Aphyosemion. Earlier synonyms include Fundulus riggenbachi and Fundulus bivittatus, and the name also appeared in the combination Aphyosemion bivittatum riggenbachi before the current treatment was stabilised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records Aphyosemion riggenbachi (Ahl, 1924) as the valid binomial.
Within the killifish hobby, the species is habitually assigned to Class 10: Chromaphyosemion by the American Killifish Association — a practical hobbyist grouping that brings together the brightly banded, non-annual West and Central African forest killies rather than a formal phylogenetic rank. The genus Chromaphyosemion has been proposed in the literature for some members of this lineage, but Aphyosemion remains the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.

Morphology
Aphyosemion riggenbachi is a slender, elongate killifish reaching a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase), placing it at the larger end of the Aphyosemion size range, though most individuals in good aquarium condition mature noticeably smaller. The body is laterally compressed with the dorsal profile more arched than the ventral. Dorsal fin counts run to 12–14 soft rays, and the anal fin to 13–15 soft rays — counts that are taxonomically informative within the group.
Colouration in males is characteristic of the Chromaphyosemion assemblage: a warm reddish to brownish ground colour overlaid with vivid blue-green or turquoise iridescent scales on the flanks, and red to orange spotting or banding that intensifies toward the unpaired fins. The caudal fin in particular tends to carry pronounced red and blue-green patterning with pointed or extended lobes in mature males. Females are cryptically coloured — brownish or olive with reduced spotting — as is typical in the family.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and visually striking: males are conspicuously more ornate in colour and may develop elongated fin rays, while females are smaller, shorter-finned, and drab. This dimorphism makes sexing straightforward even in juveniles once colour begins to develop.
Habitat
The natural range of Aphyosemion riggenbachi is confined to the coastal rainforest zone of western Cameroon, where it is recorded from small streams and brooks draining basement complex soils in the catchments of the Wuri, Dibamba, and Sanaga rivers. These are slow to moderately flowing, heavily shaded forest watercourses characterised by clear or gently tannin-stained water, sand and leaf-litter substrates, and riparian canopy cover that limits direct sunlight and moderates temperature.
Water chemistry is consistently soft and acidic: FishBase records a pH range of 5.0–6.0 and hardness from 0–5 dH, with temperatures between 20 and 73 °F — cool relative to many tropical fish, a product of the shaded, elevated terrain of western Cameroonian basement complex. These values make A. riggenbachi a blackwater or near-blackwater specialist, intolerant of the hard, alkaline conditions that suit many other aquarium fishes.
The species is described as benthopelagic and non-migratory, spending its life within a restricted stretch of stream or forest pool. It is not found in large rivers or open water, and its habitat association with intact forest understorey links its persistence directly to the state of the surrounding catchment.
Feeding
Like most small Aphyosemion species, A. riggenbachi is a carnivore in the wild, feeding primarily on small invertebrates encountered at or near the water surface and in the water column: insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and other invertebrates of appropriate size. The species occupies the upper to mid column in its forest stream habitat, hunting by sight in the typically clear, low-turbidity water.
In the aquarium, the fish accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, and tubifex are all taken — and most established individuals can be trained onto high-quality dried foods such as small pellets or granules, though live and frozen items should form the bulk of the diet for optimal colour and condition. The relatively cool preferred temperature of this species (68–73 °F) means it has a lower metabolic rate than warm-water killies; feeding frequency and portion size should be calibrated accordingly to avoid fouling the water.
Mating
Aphyosemion riggenbachi is a non-annual killifish, meaning it does not follow the boom-and-bust annual life cycle of the African savanna killies. It inhabits permanent or near-permanent forest streams where water persists year-round, and its reproductive biology is that of a plant or mop spawner: pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, or the fibres of spawning mops over an extended period rather than producing a single large batch of diapausing eggs buried in substrate.
Males display intensely to females through colour accentuation and fin-spreading, establishing and defending small territories around preferred spawning sites. The courtship involves persistent lateral displays by the male, with the pair eventually aligning side by side for the spawning act. Eggs are released singly or in small groups and adhere to plant material, where they develop in water without any diapause period. Spawning activity continues over days and weeks rather than in a single event.
Because this is a continuous, extended spawning strategy rather than a synchronised mass spawning, productivity per day is low but breeding can be maintained in a well-conditioned pair throughout much of the year.
Breeding
Conditioning pairs on live and frozen foods triggers spawning in A. riggenbachi relatively readily in the aquarium setting. The eggs are small, spherical, and weakly adhesive, laid among fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or in the fibres of a nylon spawning mop suspended just above or at the substrate. Breeders typically check the mop or plants every few days, removing any eggs found and transferring them to a shallow container of soft, acidic water for incubation.
Eggs incubate in water at approximately 68–72 °F and hatch after around two to three weeks, depending on temperature. Newly hatched fry are very small and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow. Rearing water should be soft and slightly acidic, matching the parents' chemistry, and partial water changes must be conducted carefully to avoid thermal or chemical shock to the small fry.
The extended spawning strategy means a productive pair can supply a steady trickle of fry over months, but total output per spawning event is modest compared with annual species. Adults are comparatively long-lived for killies — consistent with the non-annual life history — and a well-maintained pair can breed for two years or more.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion riggenbachi is graded as a challenging species by FishBase, suitable for experienced killifish keepers rather than beginners. The primary demands are chemical: it requires soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5, hardness below 5 dH) and cool temperatures (68–73 °F), conditions that are straightforward to achieve where soft water is available from the tap or via reverse osmosis but that may be difficult in hard-water areas without water treatment. The cool temperature preference sets it apart from most community tropical fishes and means it is best kept in a species or genus tank.
A small, well-planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or a small group; dense plantings of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Taxiphyllum, or hornwort provide cover and spawning sites. Subdued lighting and dark substrate simulate the shaded forest stream environment. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter provides adequate biological filtration without generating strong current. The tank must be kept tightly covered, as killies are accomplished jumpers.
Males can be aggressive toward one another in close quarters; a ratio of one male to two or more females is advisable. The species is best kept with similarly sized, non-competitive fish that share its water chemistry requirements, or ideally in a dedicated killifish setup. Longevity in the aquarium is good for a killifish — consistent with the non-annual life history — and well-maintained individuals can be expected to live two to three years.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion riggenbachi as Least Concern in February 2009, an evaluation carried out by Moelants (2010). The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across multiple river systems in western Cameroon and the absence of evidence for rapid population decline at the time of evaluation. Nevertheless, Least Concern for a small, forest-stream endemic in Cameroon should not be read as ecological security.
Western Cameroon's coastal rainforest is under persistent and escalating pressure from agricultural conversion — particularly oil palm and smallholder farming — timber extraction, and road construction. The small, shaded forest streams that A. riggenbachi depends on are vulnerable to sedimentation, temperature increase, and water-chemistry alteration when surrounding canopy is cleared. Because the species is tied to basement-complex draining catchments and does not occur in large rivers or open water, local extirpation through habitat degradation is a realistic risk even where formal conservation status remains reassuring.
The killifish hobby maintains an active conservation role for this species through the captive-breeding network coordinated by the American Killifish Association and the British Killifish Association, where documented locality strains are maintained and exchanged. With 63 recorded collection localities, the hobby record for this species is unusually thorough, providing a baseline against which future range contractions could in principle be measured.
