Aphyosemion omega is a small, brilliantly coloured killifish endemic to the forested lowlands of southern Cameroon, where it inhabits shallow seasonal streams along the Kopongo–Bonepoupa road corridor. Placed in the subgenus Chromaphyosemion — the plant-spawning, non-annual Aphyosemion that breed continuously on aquatic vegetation and spawning mops rather than burying eggs in peat — it reaches just 1 in standard length and has been documented from at least fourteen distinct collection localities between Kopongo and Bonepoupa. Although not formally assessed by the IUCN, its restricted range within a region subject to ongoing deforestation gives it the conservation profile typical of single-river Cameroonian endemics, and it remains only occasionally available in the specialist killifish hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion omega was described by Rainer Sonnenberg in 2007 on the basis of material collected from a small forest river near the Kopongo/Bonepoupa road in southern Cameroon. FishBase and the American Killifish Association both record the authority as Sonnenberg, 2007 — the species was not described by Radda. The valid name under the Catalog of Fishes is Aphyosemion omega Sonnenberg, 2007.

The species is placed in the subgenus Chromaphyosemion, a lineage of plant-spawning, non-annual Aphyosemion distributed across West and Central Africa. The American Killifish Association classifies it in Class 10, the standard grouping for Chromaphyosemion within the killifish-show system. Morphometric data from FishBase place body depth at approximately 19.7% of standard length and record a slightly negative dorsal-to-anal fin offset (D/A ratio −0.5), consistent with the general Chromaphyosemion bauplan.

The specific epithet omega — the final letter of the Greek alphabet — may suggest this was among the last of a series of Chromaphyosemion described by Sonnenberg in that period, though the original description's exact reasoning for the name is not reproduced in the sources consulted. As with all Aphyosemion, the Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid combination.

Morphology

Aphyosemion omega is a miniature killifish, reaching a maximum of 1 in standard length (FishBase), placing it among the smaller members of the subgenus. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical Chromaphyosemion fashion, with the dorsal fin set well back, a slightly sub-terminal mouth, and relatively large eyes suited to the dim light of shaded forest streams.

Male coloration in the subgenus is characteristically vivid — Chromaphyosemion species in general display combinations of red, orange, and blue patterning on the flanks and unpaired fins — and A. omega conforms to this pattern, though detailed colour descriptions from published sources are not extensively reproduced in the references available. Females are the duller sex, as in all Aphyosemion: brownish or olive-grey overall with reduced or absent fin patterning. Sexual dimorphism is therefore straightforward, with males identifiable by color alone within a few weeks of hatching.

Habitat

The type locality of Aphyosemion omega is a small forest river near the junction of the Kopongo and Bonepoupa road in southern Cameroon. FishBase records this site as shallow — maximum depth around 1 ft — with a sandy to gravelly substrate and no submerged aquatic vegetation. Water at the type locality measured pH 6.0 and approximately 81 °F; the habitat is described as seasonal, meaning the stream level fluctuates substantially with rainfall, though the species' non-annual reproductive mode indicates that water persists long enough for continuous plant-spawning to succeed.

The broader distribution documented by the American Killifish Association spans at least fourteen collection localities between Kopongo and Bonepoupa, suggesting the species occupies a chain of small tributaries and seepage streams within a confined geographic corridor in the southern Cameroonian lowland forest zone. These streams are typically soft, mildly acidic, tannin-tinted, and heavily shaded — conditions common to lowland Chromaphyosemion throughout the Cross River and Sanaga basin watersheds.

Aquarium experience with the subgenus suggests optimal parameters somewhat more moderate than the type-locality reading: soft to moderately hard water (conductivity 150–250 µS/cm), pH 6.6–7.4, and temperature 68–79 °F (68–78°F). The type locality's 81 °F falls within the upper range tolerated, though sustained temperatures above 79 °F may shorten lifespan in a fish that lives only around three years under ideal conditions.

Feeding

Like other small Chromaphyosemion, Aphyosemion omega is a micro-predator in the wild, taking invertebrates — small insects, mosquito larvae, zooplankton, and similar prey — from the water column and surface film of its shallow stream habitat. The species' small gape and 1 in maximum size define the upper limit of prey that can be taken.

In the aquarium, live or frozen small invertebrates such as Drosophila fruit flies, micro-worms, baby brine shrimp, and finely chopped Tubifex provide an appropriate diet and elicit strong feeding responses. High-quality micro-pellets and fine freeze-dried foods are accepted once the fish are acclimated, though live and frozen foods remain the basis for best colour and conditioning of breeding adults. Overfeeding in a small tank quickly degrades water quality; small, frequent offerings are preferable to large single meals.

Mating

Aphyosemion omega is a non-annual killifish with a plant- and mop-spawning reproductive strategy — a key distinction from the annual peat-burying killies with which it shares the family. Rather than laying eggs that enter diapause in dry substrate, Chromaphyosemion pairs spawn continuously over weeks and months, pressing single adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved aquatic plants, surface roots, or the fibres of floating spawning mops.

Males display actively to females, spreading their coloured fins and circling in a lateral threat-and-courtship posture common to the subgenus. Spawning itself is brief: the pair align side by side near a plant or mop, curve their bodies slightly together, and release one egg at a time. This process repeats at intervals throughout the day. Because spawning is distributed over time, a conditioned pair will consistently seed a mop with eggs across many days rather than in a single discrete event.

Breeding

Eggs of Aphyosemion omega are clear and adhesive, approximately 0.05 inches (around 0.5 in) in diameter, and they cling to plant fibre or mop thread without burying. Incubation in water at the recommended temperature range takes 14–21 days; no diapause period occurs. Fry hatch as miniature versions of the adults and become free-swimming within 24–48 hours of hatching.

Sexual characteristics appear around week eight, allowing breeders to separate males and females early. Full maturity is reached at approximately six months of age, and the lifespan under good aquarium conditions is around three years — long for a killifish but short relative to most aquarium species. A standard breeding setup uses a small tank (2.5–5.5 US gal) with a floating synthetic mop, minimal current from air-driven sponge filtration, and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. The mop is checked and harvested every 3–7 days; eggs can be incubated in small containers of aquarium water or on a damp paper towel in a covered Petri dish, though water incubation is the simplest approach for this non-annual species. First foods for fry are infusoria and freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii; micro-worms can be introduced within the first week.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion omega is rated as only occasionally available in the specialist killifish hobby (American Killifish Association), meaning it is typically obtained through killifish society auctions, fish shows, or direct trades between collectors rather than from general aquarium retailers. Collectors often refer to the fish by its collection code — Kopongo 89/35, ADK 09-300, Bonepoupa, and others from the fourteen known localities — and maintaining the provenance of individual population strains is a valued practice among dedicated killi keepers.

The species is well suited to a small, well-planted species tank of 10–15 US gal. Surface cover from floating plants (such as Salvinia) or overhanging broad-leaved specimens replicates the shaded, low-light forest-stream environment and encourages natural behaviour. Water movement should be minimal — a small air-driven sponge filter provides both oxygenation and gentle current. Water quality matters more than specific chemistry within the soft-acidic range: regular small partial changes (20–30% weekly) maintain the low dissolved-waste levels these small fish require.

A pair or a trio (one male, two females) occupies the available space without social conflict. Multiple males in close quarters may spar; if a group is kept, a 20-litre minimum per additional male is advisable. The fish respond well to a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates and to a stable photoperiod. Because they are small and the eggs are correspondingly tiny, tank lids must fit snugly and all gaps should be sealed — Aphyosemion are capable of passing through very small openings.

Conservation

Aphyosemion omega has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated). No published assessment is available at the time of writing, and the species does not appear in IUCN Red List search results for the genus. This absence of formal evaluation should not be read as an indication of security; it reflects the limited resources available for assessing the large number of narrow-range West and Central African killifish species.

The species' documented range is confined to a short road corridor between Kopongo and Bonepoupa in southern Cameroon — an area of lowland rainforest that has experienced significant deforestation pressure from logging, small-holder agriculture, and road expansion. Shallow seasonal forest streams of the type that serve as the type locality are acutely sensitive to riparian clearance: canopy loss raises water temperatures, increases siltation, and eliminates the leaf-litter inputs that fuel the invertebrate communities on which small killies depend. The fourteen collection localities documented by the AKA represent a geographically concentrated cluster, meaning that any large-scale land-use change in the corridor could simultaneously affect all known populations.

Conservation of Aphyosemion omega in the hobby — maintaining pure, locality-coded strains through AKA-affiliated breeders and killifish societies — serves a genuine function as an insurance population for a species at risk in the wild, provided that strain identity is rigorously documented and not compromised by hybridisation with morphologically similar Chromaphyosemion from other localities.
