Aphyosemion edeanum is a small, non-annual killifish described by the Austrian ichthyologist Arthur C. Radda in 1974 from the tropical rainforest streams of West Africa. Like other members of the diverse genus Aphyosemion, it inhabits shaded, slow-flowing or still water bodies in forest environments characterised by soft, acidic, heavily tannin-stained water. A plant-spawner rather than an annual species, it deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops and lives considerably longer than its annual counterparts from drier savanna habitats. Although not broadly evaluated by the IUCN, the narrow endemic distribution typical of many Aphyosemion species makes habitat integrity in its home watershed a matter of ongoing concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion edeanum was described by Arthur C. Radda in 1974. The authority appears in parentheses in the modern combination because the species was originally placed in a genus that has since been revised under the rules of zoological nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) treats the valid name as Aphyosemion edeanum (Radda, 1974). The genus Aphyosemion was erected by Myers in 1924 and has grown into one of the largest killifish genera, encompassing well over 100 species distributed across the Atlantic-draining rainforest and forest-savanna mosaic of West and Central Africa.

Within the genus, Aphyosemion is divided into informal species groups on the basis of shared colour patterns, meristics, and more recently molecular phylogenetics. A. edeanum belongs to the broadly construed western Aphyosemion assemblage, a loosely defined set of forest-dwelling, plant-spawning species whose taxonomy is still being refined. Killifish taxonomy at the species level is notoriously fluid — new populations with distinct colour morphs are regularly described as new species, and the boundary between A. edeanum and closely related congeners may shift as molecular data accumulate. The specific epithet edeanum likely references the Edea or Edéa area of Cameroon, a coastal-zone town near the mouth of the Wouri drainage system, pointing to the probable type locality region from which the species was first collected.

Morphology

Aphyosemion edeanum is a small, elongate killifish typical of the genus, reaching approximately 1.5–2 in total length. The body is slender and slightly compressed laterally, with the dorsal fin set far back on the body — a characteristic shape shared across Aphyosemion. Males display the vivid polychromatic colouration for which the genus is celebrated: the flanks typically show a mosaic of iridescent blue-green or turquoise scales overlaid with reddish to orange-red spots or vermiculation, and the unpaired fins carry bright red, orange, or yellow edging against a contrasting blue or green ground colour. The pattern details vary among populations, making colour pattern a key tool in field identification but also a source of taxonomic confusion.

Females are considerably plainer, as in all Aphyosemion: the body is ochre to pale brown with faint spotting and the fins are colourless to lightly tinted. This strong sexual dichromatism reflects the mate-choice-driven evolution of male ornament typical of non-annual forest killies, where males invest heavily in visual signalling rather than in rapid maturation and mass egg production as annual species must. The mouth is small and upturned, consistent with the surface and mid-water feeding habits of the group.

Habitat

Aphyosemion edeanum is native to the Atlantic-draining lowland rainforest of West-Central Africa, in the region of Cameroon and possibly adjacent areas. Like virtually all forest Aphyosemion, it inhabits small, shaded streams, seepage channels, shallow pools in forest clearings, and the marginal vegetation of larger watercourses where current is negligible. These habitats are characteristic: the water is soft (conductivity often below 100 µS/cm), acidic (pH typically 5.0–7.0), and stained brown with humic and fulvic acids leached from leaf litter and forest soils — what aquarists commonly call blackwater.

Temperatures in shaded equatorial forest streams are relatively stable and moderate, generally 68–79 °F, without the strong seasonal extremes that drive annual killifish to evolve diapausing eggs. The substrate is typically sandy or silty, with abundant fallen leaves, submerged roots, and emergent or trailing vegetation providing spawning sites and refuge. Because these habitats are tied to intact forest canopy, deforestation and forest edge effects — which raise temperature, increase light penetration, and destabilise flow — can render them unsuitable rapidly even without direct drainage.

Feeding

Aphyosemion edeanum is a micropredator, as is typical for the genus. In nature it feeds on small invertebrates at and near the water surface and in the water column: mosquito larvae, small aquatic insects, microcrustaceans such as copepods and cladocerans, and other zooplankton form the bulk of the diet. The upturned mouth is well adapted to taking prey at or just below the surface film, and the small gape limits prey size.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, and micro-worms are all suitable. Dry foods (micro-pellets and granules) are accepted by most individuals once acclimatised but should not form the sole diet. A varied live and frozen diet supports the best colouration in males and good reproductive performance in both sexes. Overfeeding should be avoided in the small, lightly filtered tanks that suit this species, as uneaten food degrades water quality rapidly.

Mating

As a non-annual species, Aphyosemion edeanum employs a fundamentally different reproductive strategy from the annual killifishes of seasonal pools. Rather than producing diapausing eggs buried in the substrate to survive a dry season that kills the adults, A. edeanum lives in permanent or near-permanent water and spawns continuously over extended periods, depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, moss, submerged roots, or spawning mops.

Male courtship is visually elaborate. The male displays his polychromatic finnage in lateral spreads and S-curve postures before the female, and pursues her persistently. Receptive females respond by moving toward the spawning substrate, where the male positions alongside her and the pair drive into the vegetation or mop fibres together, releasing a small number of eggs — typically one to a handful per spawning act — which adhere to the substrate. Spawning is a recurring daily or near-daily event rather than a single mass release; over weeks, a pair produces dozens to low hundreds of eggs. Males may be aggressive toward each other and persistent toward unreceptive females, so pairs are ideally spawned separately or in a well-planted tank providing females with refuge.

Breeding

Eggs of Aphyosemion edeanum are incubated in water — either left in situ on the spawning mop or plant and the adults removed, or picked from the spawning medium and transferred to small containers of soft, slightly acidic water. Unlike annual killifish eggs, they do not require a dry-storage diapause phase; they simply incubate submerged over a period of typically 14–21 days depending on temperature, with warmer water (75–79 °F) accelerating development.

Hatching larvae are small but relatively well-developed compared to annual species' fry. They become free-swimming and begin feeding within a day or two of hatching. First foods are very small live items: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry foods of appropriate particle size, progressing to Artemia nauplii within the first week as the fry grow. Soft, clean water is important in the rearing tank; regular small water changes with water of similar temperature and chemistry prevent ammonia accumulation without stressing fry. Young fish show sex-linked colour differentiation within the first few weeks, with males beginning to develop their characteristic colouration by the time they reach 1 in. Sexual maturity is reached at roughly 3–4 months.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion edeanum is a rewarding species for the specialist killifish keeper, though its soft-water requirements and somewhat retiring nature mean it is less commonly encountered in the general hobby than more robust West African killies. A small tank of 10–15 US gal is entirely adequate for a pair or trio (one male, two females); the species does not need space so much as good water quality and appropriate chemistry. Soft, acidic, tannin-stained water — achieved with peat filtration or botanical additions (alder cones, Indian almond leaves, dried beech leaves) — closely replicates the blackwater forest streams the species inhabits and encourages natural colouration and breeding.

Temperature should be maintained at 68–77 °F; elevated temperatures stress the fish and shorten lifespan, while the lower end of the range suits the cool, shaded streams of equatorial forest. A gentle sponge filter provides adequate filtration without the strong current the species would not encounter in nature. Dense planting with fine-leaved species such as Java moss, floating plants, or spawning mops gives males and females retreat spaces and provides the natural spawning substrate. The aquarium must be tightly covered — all killifish are agile jumpers.

A. edeanum is peaceful toward fish too large to be considered prey, but given its small size it should not be kept with boisterous or large tankmates. A biotope setup with other small, soft-water West African species, or a dedicated killifish breeding tank, suits it best. With attentive husbandry — consistent water quality, varied diet, and appropriate temperature — the species can live three to five years, considerably longer than annual killies.

Conservation

Aphyosemion edeanum has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List; the assessment search returns no result for this species, placing it in the de-facto Not Evaluated (NE) category. This absence of evaluation is itself telling: many forest Aphyosemion species are single-locality or few-locality endemics whose ranges fall within politically complex regions of Central Africa where field surveys are difficult to conduct and repeat. The lack of a formal assessment should not be taken to imply the species is secure.

The primary conservation concern for A. edeanum, as for most members of its genus, is habitat loss driven by deforestation. The Atlantic coastal forests of Cameroon are among the most biodiverse on the African continent but have experienced significant clearing for palm oil, rubber, cocoa, and subsistence agriculture, as well as urban expansion around coastal cities. The small, shaded forest streams that Aphyosemion inhabit are among the first habitats lost when canopy is removed: sedimentation, warming, desiccation, and altered hydrology make former stream habitats unsuitable even before physical drainage occurs. Localised populations with narrow ranges are particularly vulnerable to local extinction with no prospect of recolonisation from surviving populations elsewhere.

The species is maintained in the collections of killifish enthusiasts through the American Killifish Association (AKA) and European equivalent societies, where it circulates as a captive-bred strain. These hobby collections serve a genuine, if informal, ex-situ conservation function for Aphyosemion species that may be declining or extinct in portions of their wild range.
