Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion volcanum was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1924, with the type locality given as the Mount Cameroon region — specifically the volcanic terrain that gives the species its name. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species has been moved from the genus in which Ahl originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Aphyosemion volcanum (Ahl, 1924) within the family Nothobranchiidae.
The species has a tangled synonymy. It was historically confused with Aphyosemion bivittatum, a related but distinct species, and older literature may refer to it under the name A. bivittatum or within the A. bivittatum superspecies complex. The American Killifish Association assigns it to Class 10 (Chromaphyosemion), a clade of West and Central African killifishes characterised by vivid, intricate colour patterns in males. The AKA records 25 references in the specialist literature under the designation JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association), reflecting decades of hobbyist study.
The specific epithet volcanum is a Latinisation of 'volcano', directly referencing the volcanic substrate and flanks of Mount Cameroon that define the type locality and much of the known range. The mountain, known locally as Fako, is one of the most volcanically active in Africa and its peculiar soils and rainfall regime shape the soft, slightly acidic water chemistry that the species requires.
Morphology
Males reach approximately 1.5–2 in total length; FishBase records a maximum of 2 in TL. Females are slightly smaller, more plainly coloured, and carry the rounded belly typical of gravid killifishes. Body shape is slender and laterally compressed, as in most Aphyosemion, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
Male colouration is the species' most striking feature. The body base carries overlapping patches of red, yellow, green, brown, and pink — the multicoloured mosaic characteristic of the Chromaphyosemion group — with the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins typically elaborated with additional pigment. The precise pattern varies somewhat among the more than 40 documented collection localities, giving different population strains subtly distinct appearances that specialist breeders track carefully.
Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown or greyish tones without the vivid patterning. This pronounced sexual dichromatism is consistent with a mating system in which male colour serves as a signal in mate choice.
Habitat
Aphyosemion volcanum inhabits swampy sections of small brooks and streams flowing through lowland and mid-elevation rainforest on and around Mount Cameroon. The substrate is characteristically volcanic soil overlain with organic detritus, leaf litter, and humus, producing water that is very soft, slightly acidic, and heavily stained with tannins and humic acids. FishBase records temperatures of 73–79 °F, pH 6.0–6.5, and very low hardness (around 1 dH); Fishipedia extends the pH range slightly to 5.5–6.5 and similarly records hardness of 1–2 dH. Flow is slow or nearly stagnant in the swampy pool and backwater habitats the species favours.
This is non-annual water. Unlike the seasonal savanna pools that drive the annual life history in species such as Fundulopanchax and Nothobranchius, the rainforest streams and swamps around Mount Cameroon persist year-round (or nearly so), providing stable habitat in which A. volcanum can live for several years and reproduce continuously. The dense forest canopy moderates temperature and maintains the consistently high humidity that keeps substrate moisture levels stable.
The known range is centred on the Kaké River drainage and extends to the Chutes d'Ekom, Ekondo Titi, Meme, Mbonge, Muyuka, and Kumba areas — all within a relatively compact footprint on and immediately around the mountain.
Feeding
Like all Aphyosemion, A. volcanum is a carnivore. In the wild it feeds on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insects and their larvae, small worms, and other soft-bodied prey items available in the leaf-litter and surface zones of its forest-stream habitat. The upturned mouth is well adapted for taking prey at or near the water surface.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae, tubifex worms, and small mosquito larvae. Dried and prepared foods may be taken once the fish is settled, but live and frozen foods produce the best condition and colour in both sexes. Overfeeding must be avoided in the small, soft-water tanks typical of killi culture, where nitrogen accumulation can destabilise the chemistry rapidly.
Mating
Aphyosemion volcanum is a plant spawner, not an annual. The species breeds continuously in permanent water, with pairs depositing adhesive eggs individually on fine-leaved plants, moss, fibrous root masses, or synthetic spawning mops placed near the substrate or in mid-water. There is no diapause, no buried egg stage, and no dependence on a dry season — eggs develop and hatch in water over a period of days to weeks at ambient temperature.
The mating system documented in FishBase and hobbyist literature is polygynous: a single male is typically kept with several females. Males court with intense fin-spreading and colour displays; a female ready to spawn will follow the male to a chosen spawning site, where a brief embrace or side-by-side press releases a single egg and milt simultaneously. The pair repeat this over multiple sessions and days, producing eggs gradually rather than in a single mass spawning event.
Males are territorial and can harass females in confined quarters. Best practice in the hobby is to provide a well-planted or heavily structured tank and to maintain the recommended male-to-female ratio.
Breeding
Eggs are laid singly on spawning mops or fine plant leaves and can be collected by the keeper every few days, or the adults can be separated after a conditioning period and the mops transferred to a hatching container. Eggs are small and moderately adhesive; incubation in water at 73–77 °F takes approximately 2–3 weeks, though exact timing varies with temperature.
Fry are tiny on hatching and require appropriately sized first foods. Infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods are used for the first days, followed by newly hatched Artemia nauplii and finely sieved micro-worms as growth allows. The small size of the fry and the soft, low-hardness water required make this a species that rewards careful attention to water quality and feeding regime in the rearing tank.
Hobbyist sources classify A. volcanum as difficult to breed — Fishipedia rates it as hard — reflecting its sensitivity to water chemistry deviations and the need to maintain very soft, slightly acidic conditions throughout the breeding and rearing process. Despite the challenge, the species is maintained by specialist killi keepers and periodically appears in the offerings of specialist societies and fish auctions.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion volcanum is a species for experienced killifish keepers rather than community aquarists. It demands very soft, slightly acidic, tannin-rich water matching its rainforest-stream origin: pH 5.5–6.5, hardness 1–2 dH, temperature 73–79 °F. Hard or alkaline tap water without conditioning will suppress colour, compromise immune function, and prevent breeding. Peat filtration or the use of Indian almond leaves and driftwood to lower pH and add humic substances is standard practice.
Tank size can be modest — a 10–15 US gal aquarium is adequate for a trio or small group — but the setup must be well-established and stable. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as all killifishes are accomplished jumpers. Dense planting with fine-leaved species (Java moss, Taxiphyllum spp., or synthetic mops) provides both spawning sites and the visual cover that reduces stress and male aggression. Subdued lighting suits the species' forest-floor habitat and enhances colour.
A. volcanum is a shy and somewhat retiring species; Fishipedia notes it is diurnal but hide-prone. It should not be mixed with boisterous or large tankmates. A species or Aphyosemion-only setup is strongly recommended. Availability is occasional through specialist killifish societies and hobbyist networks rather than general retail, and its demanding water requirements mean it is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist circles.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion volcanum as Endangered (EN) in 2009 (assessed by T. Moelants), applying criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — a combination that indicates both a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, with continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. The assessment was logged under taxon ID 182487 and assessment ID 7896707.
The species' Endangered status reflects the double jeopardy of a narrow endemic in a rapidly changing landscape. Mount Cameroon and its foothills lie within one of the highest-rainfall and most biodiverse corridors in Africa, but the lowland and mid-elevation forest in the Kaké, Meme, and Kumba watersheds has faced sustained pressure from agricultural clearance, oil palm expansion, and timber extraction. The volcanic soils that produce the fish's characteristic water chemistry also make the hillsides attractive for smallholder farming. Forest loss directly degrades the stream-side canopy that buffers water temperature and maintains the leaf-litter input on which the food web depends.
Although more than 42 collection localities are documented by the AKA — a relatively large number for a Chromaphyosemion species — all lie within a geographically compact area around Mount Cameroon, meaning that landscape-scale habitat loss or a major volcanic event could simultaneously affect a large proportion of known populations. Collection pressure for the ornamental trade has also been cited as a contributing threat, though it is secondary to habitat loss in the threat profile. The AKA maintains studbook-quality locality records that could support future conservation breeding and reintroduction efforts should the situation worsen.
