Aphyosemion melanogaster is a small, non-annual killifish described from the Lobe River drainage of southwestern Cameroon in 2005, placing it among the most recently named members of the subgenus Chromaphyosemion. Like its close relatives in the Kribi-area rainforest — including the sympatric Aphyosemion loennbergii and Aphyosemion punctulatum — it inhabits permanent, soft, acidic streams running through primary rainforest, depositing adhesive eggs on fine plants and mops rather than burying a diapausing clutch in seasonal peat. Its modest size (under 1 in standard length) and restricted endemic range make it a fish for specialist killifish keepers rather than general hobbyists, and its status as Not Evaluated by the IUCN leaves open the conservation questions facing a single-drainage endemic in a region under sustained deforestation pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion melanogaster was formally described by Legros, Zentz & Agnèse in 2005 from specimens collected in the Lobe River basin of southwestern Cameroon. The species is placed within the subgenus Chromaphyosemion, a clade of non-annual, permanently running-water killies centred on the coastal drainages of Cameroon and Gabon. The valid combination as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Aphyosemion melanogaster Legros, Zentz & Agnèse, 2005 — the authority appears without parentheses because the name was erected directly in Aphyosemion and has not been transferred. The family affiliation follows Nothobranchiidae, the dominant clade of African killifishes.

The species belongs to a guild of morphologically similar, allopatric or partially sympatric Chromaphyosemion that partition the small watercourses of the Kribi-area forest. At the type locality sites in the Lobe basin, A. melanogaster has been recorded in sympatry with A. loennbergii and A. punctulatum, underscoring the fine spatial partitioning within this genus in Cameroon's coastal drainages. Karyotypic data reported by Völker and collaborators document a diploid number of 2n=36 for the species, consistent with other members of the subgenus. The American Killifish Association literature archive holds a reference profile based on Pohlmann's material and photographs from the Lobe and Lolabe (near Mboro) river collections.

Morphology

Aphyosemion melanogaster is a small killifish; FishBase records a maximum size of 1 in standard length for unsexed or male individuals — placing it at the diminutive end of the Aphyosemion size spectrum. The body form is typical of the Chromaphyosemion guild: slender and laterally compressed with an upturned, terminal mouth suited to intercepting surface and near-surface invertebrate prey, and moderately large, reflective scales.

Sexual dichromatism is characteristic of the subgenus: males carry the elaborate colour patterning and extended fin rays that define Chromaphyosemion, while females are the more cryptic, brown-toned sex with largely unpatterned fins. The specific epithet melanogaster (Greek: melas, black + gaster, belly or stomach) references a dark or blackish ventral colouration in one sex. Detailed chromatic descriptions from live material — fin ray counts, precise scale-row data, and the full adult male livery — are available in the 2005 original description by Legros, Zentz & Agnèse, which should be consulted for definitive morphometric data.

Habitat

Aphyosemion melanogaster is endemic to the Lobe River drainage in the coastal lowlands of southwestern Cameroon; collection records include multiple sites in the Lobe basin as well as the Lolabe River near Mboro. These are permanent, shaded streams and pools within or at the edge of primary rainforest on the humid coastal plain north and west of Kribi — a landscape dominated by dense canopy, deep leaf litter, and waterlogged basement soils.

The waters of this region are characteristically very soft, gently to moderately acidic, and tannin-stained by decomposing organic matter. Congener data from the same subgenus (Chromaphyosemion poliaki) provide a practical proxy for field conditions: pH in the range 4.5–6.5, general hardness up to 8 °dH, and temperature around 73–77 °F. These parameters reflect the cool, shaded microclimate of intact rainforest — temperatures that are modest by tropical standards but above the very cool 64–72 °F typical of some highland Aphyosemion localities. The permanent nature of the streams underpins the non-annual life history: there is no dry-season desiccation pressure to favour diapausing eggs.

Feeding

In the wild, Aphyosemion melanogaster is a micropredator, foraging for the small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and wind-blown or fallen terrestrial insects — that characterise soft, productive rainforest streams. The upturned mouth is well-suited to targeting prey at the water surface and in the surface film, and at 1 in SL the prey items are correspondingly tiny.

In captivity, live and frozen small invertebrates form the appropriate diet: Artemia nauplii, micro-worm, Grindal worm, Daphnia, and small bloodworm are all suitable. Dried foods may be accepted once the fish is settled, but live and frozen items are preferred for conditioning and colour. Because of its small size, feeding portions should be modest; soiled water in the soft, poorly buffered conditions suited to this fish degrades rapidly and ammonia tolerance is low.

Mating

Aphyosemion melanogaster is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. The reproductive mode that defines Chromaphyosemion is continuous trickle-spawning: the pair locate a clump of fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or a floating spawning mop and deposit individual adhesive eggs one at a time over a sustained period — days to weeks — rather than committing a single mass clutch to seasonal peat. There is no diapause; eggs develop directly in water and require no drying phase.

Male courtship involves lateral fin-spreading, colour intensification, and persistent close-following of receptive females. Once the female is ready, the pair align flank-to-flank at the spawning substrate and a single egg is deposited and fertilised per embrace. The adhesive coat anchors the egg among plant fibres or mop strands. Because adults readily consume eggs, the spawning substrate is typically removed every few days and replaced with fresh material so eggs can hatch undisturbed in a separate vessel.

Breeding

Eggs of non-annual Aphyosemion are incubated in shallow, soft water — typically water from the spawning tank diluted with a small proportion of distilled or RO water — in low, lidded containers or petri dishes. At temperatures around 72–75 °F, eggs hatch in approximately two to three weeks, though the timeline varies. Unlike the peat-stored eggs of annual killies, non-annual eggs must not be allowed to dry; they are checked regularly and any fungused eggs removed promptly with a fine brush.

Fry of Aphyosemion melanogaster are tiny — commensurate with the adult size of under 1 in — and require appropriately small first foods: infusoria, vinegar eelworm, or the finest-grade commercial fry powders before progressing to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. A tight-fitting cover on the rearing vessel is essential from the outset, as even newly free-swimming killifish fry are capable of negotiating surprisingly small gaps. Growth is gradual, and water quality must be maintained fastidiously in the soft, lightly buffered conditions the species requires. Sexual maturity is typically reached at several months of age.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion melanogaster is a specialist fish for killifish hobbyists who can maintain small volumes of soft, acidic, cool water. Its sub-1 in adult size means a single pair or trio can be comfortably housed in a well-planted tank of 5.5–10 US gal, heavily shaded with floating plants or a dark cover to suppress ambient light and mimic the dimly lit forest floor. Spawning mops of dark wool or java moss clumps provide ideal egg-deposition sites that are easily removed for incubation.

Water chemistry should mirror the Cameroon rainforest: temperature 72–77 °F, pH 4.5–6.5, hardness below 8 °dH — conditions achievable with a blend of reverse-osmosis or rain water and a small proportion of mature blackwater or peat filtration. Efficient but gentle filtration (a sponge filter driven by a low-output air pump) maintains quality without generating the current this fish does not inhabit in nature. The species is best kept as a single-species setup or with other small, compatible Chromaphyosemion; tankmates must be similarly sized and non-competitive. The American Killifish Association community is the primary hobbyist resource for current husbandry notes and access to captive breeding lines, as wild-collected material is rarely available outside specialist circles.

Conservation

Aphyosemion melanogaster has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated — a gap that leaves its conservation standing formally unquantified. The Lobe River drainage where it is endemic lies in the coastal lowlands of southwestern Cameroon, a region subject to ongoing deforestation for timber extraction, oil palm expansion, and subsistence agriculture. These pressures reduce forest canopy cover, increase sediment and nutrient loads in streams, and degrade the clear, cool, low-conductivity water chemistry on which Chromaphyosemion species depend.

As a single-drainage endemic with a small adult size and presumably limited dispersal capacity, A. melanogaster is inherently vulnerable to localised habitat deterioration — a pattern shared by numerous Aphyosemion species across the forest-stream drainages of Cameroon and Gabon. The sympatric occurrence with A. loennbergii and A. punctulatum at Kribi-area sites means that any baseline survey of those species could readily include melanogaster, and a formal IUCN assessment drawing on collection records from the original description sites would meaningfully clarify its status. In the interim, maintenance of captive breeding lines in the killifish hobby provides an informal ex situ buffer for a species whose wild populations have not been recently surveyed.
