Epiplatys huberi is a small, non-annual panchax killifish endemic to the forests of southwestern Gabon, known from permanent or near-permanent streams on the southwest flank of the Du-Chaillu Massif in Ngounié Province. Described by Radda and Pürzl in 1981, it belongs to a rich West and Central African genus of surface-oriented egg-placers that spawn in clumps of fine-leaved vegetation rather than burying eggs in seasonal pool sediments. Named in honour of the French ichthyologist and killifish authority Jean H. Huber, the species reaches approximately 2.5 in total length and is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, though its restricted range in an area of active timber extraction warrants continued monitoring.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys huberi was described in 1981 by the Austrian killifish researchers Arthur C. Radda and Erich Pürzl. The type locality is recorded precisely as the southwest flank of the Du-Chaillu Massif, Ngounié Province, in southwestern Gabon — specifically a site approximately 16 mi east-northeast of N'Dendé on the road to Lébamba. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) treats Epiplatys huberi Radda & Pürzl, 1981 as the valid combination, and the authority is presented without parentheses because the species was described in its present genus.

The genus Epiplatys belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae and encompasses, by current treatments, some 53 valid species distributed across West and Central Africa from Senegal to the Congo basin. The genus is organised into several subgenera, though informal species-group assignments are the more commonly used framework in the hobby. Epiplatys are characterised as non-annual panchax: they inhabit permanent and semi-permanent waters, lay adhesive eggs on plant material near the water surface, and live considerably longer than the annual killifish of the Fundulopanchax and Nothobranchius groups that colonise ephemeral pools.

The ETYFish Project records that the species epithet huberi honours Jean H. Huber (born 1952), a French ichthyologist and pharmaceutical executive who made extensive contributions to killifish taxonomy and documentation, particularly across Africa and South America. Killi-Data lists the species among the valid members of Epiplatys and provides the same authority and date.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in for Epiplatys huberi, placing it among the smaller members of a genus where sizes range roughly 1.5–4 in. The body form is typical of the panchax guild: elongated and slightly laterally compressed, with a dorsally flattened head and a terminal, upturned mouth adapted for seizing prey at or just below the surface film. The dorsal fin is set well back toward the caudal peduncle, and the caudal fin is rounded to slightly pointed in males.

As with most Epiplatys, males display more vivid colouration and in many populations develop extended fin filaments. Females are typically smaller and less colourful, with a fuller abdomen when gravid. Detailed colouration notes for E. huberi specifically are sparse in the available literature, but the species belongs to a group in which males commonly show blue-green iridescent flanks, orange or red finnage, and a series of dark vertical bars or spots along the body — a pattern broadly consistent with other Ngounié watershed Epiplatys.

Habitat

Epiplatys huberi is endemic to Gabon, with its type and (as far as published records indicate) only known locality in the Ngounié Province on the southwest flank of the Du-Chaillu Massif. The surrounding landscape is lowland to submontane Central African rainforest drained by tributaries of the Ngounié River, itself a major right-bank tributary of the Ogooué.

FishBase characterises the habitat as permanent water, consistent with the non-annual biology shared by all Epiplatys. In this part of the du Chaillu uplands, streams typically run over laterite and sandy substrates beneath closed rainforest canopy, producing soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water with low conductivity and low buffering capacity. Temperatures recorded in FishBase for the species are 64–72 °F, reflecting the slightly cooler, higher-elevation position of the type locality relative to coastal Gabon lowlands. The fish likely occupy shallow, heavily vegetated stream margins, leaf-litter accumulations, and overhanging bank zones — microhabitats typical of surface-feeding Epiplatys across the genus range.

Feeding

Like all Epiplatys, E. huberi is an opportunistic surface and near-surface predator. The upturned mouth and flattened cranial profile are adaptations for taking small prey at the water's surface: terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, small insects, mosquito larvae, and other small organisms that become available at or just below the surface film.

In the aquarium, the species will readily accept suitably sized live and frozen foods — Drosophila fruit flies, mosquito larvae, small bloodworm, and Artemia are all appropriate. Dry foods of a floating or slowly sinking type are accepted by acclimated individuals. Feeding at the surface or upper third of the water column replicates the natural foraging posture and encourages confident behaviour.

Mating

Epiplatys huberi reproduces in the manner shared by all non-annual Epiplatys: it is a plant-spawner or mop-spawner, depositing individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, floating plant material, or synthetic spawning mops placed near the water surface or among the mid-water vegetation. There is no diapause; eggs require no drying or peat-moss storage between incubation stages, and the fish does not bury eggs in substrate. Spawning occurs in discrete pairs rather than group spawning events and continues daily or near-daily over extended periods.

Males court females with lateral displays, spreading the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins to show colouration. A brief spawning embrace — the male wrapping alongside the female — accompanies each egg release, with one or a few eggs deposited per embrace. Compared with annual killifish, mating in non-annual Epiplatys is a low-intensity, repeated-event process rather than a concentrated seasonal burst.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and typically clear to slightly amber, and are deposited singly or in small clusters on plant leaves or spawning mop fibres. Incubation in water at 68–72 °F takes approximately 10–14 days, after which the fry hatch as miniature, free-swimming juveniles capable of taking small live foods immediately.

In the aquarium, a dedicated breeding setup — a pair in a small, well-planted or mop-equipped tank — is the standard approach. Eggs can be collected daily by removing and replacing the spawning medium, then incubated separately in small containers of slightly acidic, aged water. This prevents predation of eggs and newly hatched fry by the parents. First foods for fry include Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and paramecia; the fry grow comparatively steadily toward adult size over several months. Because E. huberi is non-annual, the adults are long-lived relative to annual species and will spawn across multiple seasons with good husbandry.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys huberi is suited to a small, quiet, well-planted aquarium. A tank of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid (killies are accomplished jumpers), mature filtration providing gentle surface movement, and floating or emergent fine-leaved plants provides an appropriate environment. The cooler temperature range recorded for this species — 64–72 °F per FishBase — means it does not require heating in many temperate climates and in fact may not thrive at the higher temperatures common in tropical community tanks.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness), reflecting the rainforest stream conditions of its Ngounié source waters. The species is best kept in a small species or near-species group: a pair or small group (one male to two or three females) avoids excessive male-on-female harassment. Tank mates, if used, should be small, peaceful species occupying mid-water or bottom zones, since E. huberi focuses activity near the surface.

In the hobby, Epiplatys huberi is a specialist fish maintained primarily within killifish clubs and among collectors interested in West and Central African panchax diversity. It is uncommon in general trade; specimens are more often obtained through killifish association fish rooms or direct exchanges between specialists.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys huberi as Least Concern (LC) in 2009, reflecting that at the time of assessment no immediate evidence of rapid population decline was identified. The assessment predates more recent documentation of land-use change in the Ngounié basin, and the species' highly restricted known range — a single type locality in the Du-Chaillu Massif foothills — makes it inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation.

The primary threat to forest streams in Ngounié Province is commercial logging and associated road construction, which increases fine sediment loads, raises water temperatures through canopy removal, and alters the hydrology of small headwater streams. Agricultural clearance and small-scale artisanal gold mining also affect the broader Ogooué tributary network. None of these pressures has been specifically documented for the type locality of E. huberi, but the narrow endemic range means that a single significant disturbance event could eliminate or fragment the known population.

Given the 2009 assessment date and the pace of forest loss in Gabon's interior since that time, a reassessment using updated habitat mapping would be warranted. In the interim, the Least Concern listing should be read alongside the caveat of a very restricted known distribution rather than as a signal of secure, widespread abundance.
