Taxonomy & naming
Synodontis robbianus was described by Andrew Smith in 1875. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the large genus Synodontis, which encompasses well over a hundred species spread across the river systems and lakes of tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis robbianus as the valid name under which this species is currently recognised.
The genus name Synodontis is an old Greek-derived term applied to these African catfishes, conventionally interpreted as 'joined teeth' or 'meeting teeth' (syn-, together + odous, tooth), referring to features of the dentition that originally distinguished them. The epithet robbianus honours its dedicatee; it is a Latinised adjectival form of a personal name, as was common practice in nineteenth-century taxonomic descriptions. Beyond the authority and date, primary description details for this species are sparse in accessible literature.
Morphology
Synodontis robbianus has the classic squeaker build: a broad, somewhat flattened head, a robust but relatively short body, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair arising from the upper jaw and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs beneath the chin. The dorsal fin bears a stiff, serrated, locking spine at its leading edge, and each pectoral fin similarly leads with a locking serrated spine; these can be rasped against the pectoral girdle to produce the namesake squeaking sound.
Adult size is modest: specimens typically measure 3–3.5 in standard length, with a reported maximum of around 4 in SL. This places S. robbianus among the smaller members of the genus — notably more compact than many commonly kept Synodontis. The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which has direct implications for medication sensitivity. Colouration is not well documented in the accessible literature; as with many small squeakers it is likely a mottled brown or grey-brown, providing camouflage against the riverbed.
Habitat
Synodontis robbianus is native to the Ogowe (Ogooué) River system, which drains a large part of Gabon and extends into southern Cameroon in West-Central Africa. The Ogowe is a major lowland tropical river flowing through equatorial forest, and its waters are characteristically soft and mildly acidic — low in dissolved minerals, stained to amber by tannins and humic acids from forest leaf litter, with temperatures in the warm tropical range of approximately 73–79 °F and pH typically between 6.0 and 7.5.
Like other river-dwelling Synodontis from West and Central Africa, S. robbianus is a benthic species, living on or near the riverbed where it forages among leaf litter, submerged wood, and root tangles. It is most active after dark. This is emphatically not a rift-lake species: the soft, acidic conditions of its home river are far removed from the hard, alkaline water of Lake Tanganyika or Lake Malawi.
Feeding
Synodontis robbianus is an omnivorous benthic forager. In the wild it takes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — along with any organic matter it encounters while rooting through the substrate after dark. Some algal and plant material is likely taken incidentally.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and will accept a range of sinking foods: quality catfish pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, frozen brine shrimp, and other prepared foods. Because it is nocturnal, offering food after lights-out ensures it receives adequate nutrition without being outcompeted by day-active tankmates. Live or frozen foods are not strictly necessary but are relished.
Mating
Synodontis robbianus is not the cuckoo brood-parasite of its genus — that distinction belongs to S. multipunctatus, which spawns parasitically with mouthbrooding cichlids. S. robbianus is a West-Central African river fish with no such specialisation documented. In the wild, mating likely follows the pattern common to most non-parasitic Synodontis: a brief, poorly observed spawning with adhesive eggs scattered over the substrate, after which the adults provide little or no parental care.
Sexing is not straightforward in this species; as in most Synodontis, mature females are typically fuller-bodied than males, but there are no strong external differences. The species is rarely kept in large numbers, and reliable accounts of natural mating behaviour under aquarium conditions are essentially absent from the hobby literature.
Breeding
Synodontis robbianus is very rarely bred in captivity. Unlike S. multipunctatus, it cannot exploit the cuckoo strategy, and like the majority of Synodontis it does not breed reliably in home aquaria without hormonal induction. Wild fish of this species are believed to scatter adhesive eggs over the substrate with minimal or no parental attention; once the eggs hatch, the fry receive no care.
Commercial breeding of this species is not documented in accessible sources; most aquarium specimens are wild-collected. If attempted in captivity, the approach would follow general Synodontis practice — conditioning a group of well-fed adults, providing soft acidic water matching the native habitat parameters, and supplying substrate cover. Expect low success rates, and note that data on this species' reproductive biology is sparse.
In the aquarium
Synodontis robbianus is a manageable aquarium fish for a reasonably experienced keeper. Its small adult size — 3–3.5 in, rarely exceeding 4 in SL — means it does not require the large quarters demanded by bigger squeakers; a tank of 20–25 US gal is workable for a small group. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 73–79 °F), reflecting its West-Central African river origin; hard, alkaline rift-lake water is inappropriate for this species.
Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, which makes S. robbianus — like all Mochokidae — more sensitive to copper and to many standard aquarium medications than scaled fishes; dose conservatively (half-dose is commonly advised) and research medication safety before treating. Second, the locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle readily in a net and can jab the handler; always move this fish in a container rather than netting it. Provide plenty of cover in the form of caves, hollow wood, and leaf litter — this is a shy, nocturnal species that hides during the day. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow and can be kept with other soft-water West African fish of appropriate size. Synodontis is best kept in small groups rather than singly.
Conservation
Synodontis robbianus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated. No published assessment of its population status or threats is available in the accessible literature.
The species is native to the Ogowe River basin of Gabon and Cameroon — a region that retains large areas of relatively intact equatorial rainforest and is not subject to the same level of deforestation and agricultural conversion as some other parts of West Africa. However, baseline population data are lacking, and the extent to which habitat modification or collection pressure affects this species is unknown. Most aquarium specimens are wild-caught, and the trade volume appears low given the species' scarcity in the hobby.
