Aphyosemion coeleste is a small, richly coloured non-annual killifish from the forest streams of southeastern Gabon and the adjacent Louesse River drainage of the Republic of Congo. Described in 1977 from a brook near Massango in the Lekedi system — a tributary of the Ogooué — it inhabits permanent swampy forest streams at elevations up to roughly 400 metres on the eastern slopes of the Chaillu Massif, where soft, acidic water flows slowly beneath grassy overhangs. The species epithet coeleste — Latin for heavenly or sky-blue — speaks to the vivid blue of the male's flanks, a colouration that places it firmly in the jewelled company of the Mesoaphyosemion subgenus. Multiple collection localities spanning both Gabon and Congo yield populations with subtly distinct colour patterns and even different karyotypes, making it a collector's fish as much as a hobbyist's. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2009, citing manganese mining and slash-and-burn agriculture as the primary threats to its narrow endemic range.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion coeleste was described by Joerg-Volker Huber and Anton C. Radda in 1977, from specimens collected in August 1976 at a brook approximately 13 kilometres northwest of Moanda in the Lekedi system drainage, which flows into the Ogooué catchment of southeastern Gabon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Aphyosemion coeleste Huber & Radda, 1977, placed in the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion within the large and species-rich genus Aphyosemion — the African forest killies of the family Nothobranchiidae.

Within the genus, A. coeleste anchors its own species group within Mesoaphyosemion, a clade of laterally compressed, relatively deep-bodied killifish characterised by vivid male colouration and a non-annual reproductive strategy. The American Killifish Association reference library places it alongside other Mesoaphyosemion species from the Ogooué basin and records meristic values of D = 11–12, A = 14–15, dorsal-to-anal fin offset of +7 to +8 positions, and a lateral line scale count of 29–31. Karyotype data reveal an unusual degree of chromosomal variation across populations: 2n = 32 has been recorded from some localities and 2n = 30 from others, suggesting that the 'species' as currently bounded may encompass distinct genetic lineages. Sympatric associates at type-locality-proximate sites include Aphyosemion thysi, Procatopus cf. calindae, small barbs, Ctenopoma nanum, and Hymenochilus sp.

Morphology

Adult males reach approximately 1.5–2 in standard length (Radda & Pürzl 1987), with FishBase recording a maximum of 2 in total length. Females are slightly smaller, less deep-bodied, and uniformly dull olive-brown with minimal fin marking. The body is moderately compressed and somewhat deep for an Aphyosemion, consistent with the Mesoaphyosemion subgenus profile.

Male colouration is the defining character: the flanks are a vivid sky-blue to turquoise-blue, hence the epithet coeleste, overlaid with a pattern of red spots or short streaks that varies in intensity and arrangement among populations. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins carry red sub-marginal bands that begin to develop in males at approximately 1 in standard length — the first reliable indicator of sex in growing juveniles. Egg diameter is recorded at approximately 0.5 in, relatively large for an Aphyosemion, consistent with the non-annual life history strategy of producing fewer, well-provisioned eggs rather than the large clutches of seasonal species.

Habitat

Aphyosemion coeleste is endemic to a geographically compact region straddling the border of southeastern Gabon and the adjacent western Republic of Congo. Its range spans the eastern slopes of the Chaillu Massif, the Louesse River drainage of southern Congo, and multiple tributaries of the Ogooué system in Gabon, including the Lekedi, Missanga/Matsanga, and Mounana drainages. Multiple collection localities are documented — among them Moanda, Mounana, Mayala, Mbinda (at roughly 1312 ft altitude), RPC 5 Titi, and the Malinga group — each yielding what the killifish hobby treats as distinct population strains.

The preferred microhabitat is permanent or near-permanent rainforest brook: small, slow-flowing streams 1–4 metres wide and 10–40 centimetres deep, with swampy margins and grassy overhangs under which the fish shelter. The AKA reference records measured biotope values of pH 5.0–6.5 and temperature 63–70 °F across collection sites, with dry-season temperatures of 64–66 °F. FishBase extends the temperature envelope to 64–72 °F and the pH range to 5.8–7.2 for captive management. These are soft, often tannin-stained forest waters with low mineral content, typical of the Congolian rainforest substrate across this region.

Feeding

In nature Aphyosemion coeleste feeds as a microinvertebrate predator, taking small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and other invertebrates associated with the slow-moving, leaf-litter-rich streams it inhabits. This guild is typical of West and Central African forest killies and underpins their bright colouration, which is expensive to produce and maintain and reflects access to carotenoid-rich prey.

In captivity the species responds well to live and frozen small invertebrates: newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, Cyclops, Daphnia, and small bloodworm portions are all accepted. The AKA breeding notes caution against overfeeding — the species has a tendency to gorge — and recommend feeding sparingly every two days on live foods. Variety is more important than volume; a diet heavy in dried or freeze-dried foods alone tends to suppress breeding activity and diminish condition.

Mating

Aphyosemion coeleste is a non-annual killifish. It does not bury eggs in sediment, does not undergo embryonic diapause, and is not tied to a seasonal drying cycle. Instead, pairs court and spawn throughout the year in permanent water, depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, and floating spawning mops near or at the water surface — the classic plant-spawner reproductive mode shared by most Mesoaphyosemion species.

Males establish loose dominance hierarchies and court females with lateral displays that show off the vivid flank colouration and the red-banded fins. Because the species is not highly prolific, spawning events are spread over time rather than concentrated in a single mass release. Males develop the characteristic red sub-marginal fin banding at roughly 1 in SL, and females that are receptive adopt a pale, slightly distended posture. In practice, most hobbyists condition pairs separately and introduce them to a prepared spawning tank with ample mop or fine plant material.

Breeding

Spawning occurs among floating spawning mops or Java fern, with the pair depositing single adhesive eggs that the keeper collects manually or leaves in a separate low-density fry-rearing tank. Egg diameter is approximately 0.5 in — large by Aphyosemion standards. Incubation in water at 66–70 °F takes two to three weeks. Semi-dry incubation in moist peat fibre can work for limited periods (AKA records up to approximately three weeks), but the species is primarily an aquatic spawner and the semi-dry method is a secondary technique rather than a routine one.

Fry are free-swimming shortly after hatching and accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, and infusoria as first foods; sieved Cyclops and Daphnia are added as they grow. Growth is slow: first male colouration appears at around three months, and sexual maturity is typically reached at six months. The AKA notes that first eggs produced by fish under six months old tend to be infertile, and recommends conditioning young fish to at least eight months before using them as breeding stock. Breeding water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0); hard water is tolerated but growth slows. The fish periodically enter rest phases with no spawning activity, which is normal and should not be interpreted as a sign of poor condition.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion coeleste is considered a moderately difficult species for the killifish hobby — manageable for an experienced keeper but less forgiving than the hardier Aphyosemion gardneri group. FishBase rates it as difficult to maintain in the aquarium, reflecting its sensitivity to temperature extremes and requirement for reliably soft, slightly acidic water. The AKA recommends keeping it at 66–70 °F; temperatures above 73–75 °F over extended periods are poorly tolerated and shorten lifespan.

A small, well-filtered species tank of 10–15 US gal, with a tight-fitting lid, dim lighting, floating plants or Indian fern, and regular partial water changes with soft, lightly acidified water suits this fish well. It is best kept as a species or with very small, non-competing dither fish. Males may quarrel in the absence of sufficient cover; a ratio of one male to two females is a common recommendation, with backup mop material to spread spawning activity. The long-lived nature of the non-annual strategy means these fish can live two to four years in good conditions — a contrast with the annual species that defines what 'longevity' means for a killifish. Multiple population strains with distinct colour forms circulate in the hobby and are tracked by collectors using collection codes (Moanda, Mbinda, Mayala, and others); mixing strains is discouraged to maintain the genetic integrity of each locality form.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion coeleste as Vulnerable (VU) in February 2009, a status that reflects the species' narrow endemic range and the accumulation of industrial and agricultural pressure within it. The primary threat identified in the assessment is manganese mining, which is active in the Moanda area of southeastern Gabon — the heart of the species' range and the location of the type locality. Iron and uranium mining are listed as potential future threats. Slash-and-burn agriculture causes sedimentation and chemical alteration of the small forest streams the species depends on, and deforestation for timber removes the canopy shade that keeps these streams cool and their banks stable.

No conservation actions were known at the time of the 2009 assessment. The species occurs in a region of Gabon that has seen continued industrial development since the assessment, and the 2009 data may understate current pressure. Its requirement for permanent, cool, soft-water forest streams makes it particularly vulnerable to catchment-scale disturbance: unlike annual killies that can recolonise from diapausing eggs after a disturbance, A. coeleste depends on continuous, connected water. The killifish hobby maintains multiple population strains in captivity, providing a genetic reservoir, but formal ex-situ conservation programmes are absent. An updated IUCN assessment, incorporating current land-use and mining data for the Ogooué basin, would be warranted.
