Simpsonichthys punctulatus is a tiny annual killifish endemic to the cerrado savanna of central Brazil, known from a single seasonal swamp in the upper rio Paracatu drainage of the rio São Francisco basin in Goiás state. Males are jewelled with longitudinal rows of light blue dots along the flank and carry a long filamentous tip on the dorsal fin, while the pectoral fins blush red with blue spots — the diagnostic character used to distinguish this species within the eastern clade of its subgenus. Like all South American annual killies, it lives a compressed life dictated by the cerrado's wet–dry cycle: adults spawn into the soft mud of temporary pools, then perish in the drought, leaving only buried, diapause-arrested eggs to carry the lineage through the dry months until the rains return. The IUCN assesses it as Vulnerable, citing its restriction to one known location and ongoing pressure from agricultural land conversion and ornamental-fish collection.

Taxonomy & naming

Simpsonichthys punctulatus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Gilberto Brasil in 2007, based on specimens collected from a seasonal swamp adjacent to a tributary of the rio Bezerra in the rio Preto drainage, upper rio Paracatu system, rio São Francisco basin, central Brazil. The description appeared in Vertebrate Zoology 57(1): 57–61. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Simpsonichthys punctulatus (Costa & Brasil, 2007); the authority is parenthesised because the species was originally placed in a subgenus that has since been rearranged.

Costa and Brasil placed the species in the eastern clade of the subgenus Simpsonichthys within the large genus Simpsonichthys, a group of South American annual killifishes belonging to the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes). The genus Simpsonichthys was erected to accommodate a diverse assemblage of Brazilian annual killies that share the peat-spawning reproductive strategy and a broadly similar body plan, distinguished from one another primarily by male coloration and fin ornamentation.

The specific epithet punctulatus is Latin, meaning 'dotted' or 'spotted', a direct reference to the rows of light blue dots that pattern the male's flanks — the most immediately visible feature of the living fish. No established common name is widely used for this species in the English-language hobby.

Morphology

Simpsonichthys punctulatus is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in for males and approximately 1 in SL for females, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, conforming to the stocky profile typical of Simpsonichthys. The original description records 14–19 dorsal soft rays in males and 17–19 anal soft rays, counts that help separate it from allied species within the eastern clade.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males are the ornamental sex: the flanks carry longitudinal rows of small, iridescent light blue dots against a darker ground colour — the namesake 'punctulatus' pattern — and the pectoral fins are red with blue spots, the character Costa and Brasil identified as diagnostic for this species. The dorsal fin in males ends in a long, filamentous extension on its uppermost ray. Females are cryptically coloured, lacking the blue spotting and fin filament, and with a plain, brownish body suited to a life spent close to the substrate.

In life, both sexes are small, bottom-oriented fish with upturned mouths adapted for surface-feeding and the substrate-diving behaviour used during spawning.

Habitat

The type locality and sole known location of Simpsonichthys punctulatus is a temporary swamp of approximately 0 mi² situated adjacent to a tributary of the rio Bezerra, within the rio Preto drainage of the upper rio Paracatu system, itself a left-bank tributary of the rio São Francisco, in Goiás state, central Brazil. The swamp lies within the cerrado biome, the vast tropical savanna of the Brazilian interior, and floods seasonally with the summer rains before drying completely during the dry season.

The pools inhabited by this species are shallow, warm, and rich in decomposing organic material — a combination of leaf litter, mud, and detritus that accumulates on the pool floor during the wet phase and constitutes the substrate into which the fish spawn. Water in such cerrado pools is typically soft and mildly acidic, coloured by tannins, though specific chemistry parameters for this locality have not been published in the available literature. The pools are classified by the IUCN as seasonal or intermittent inland wetlands and marshes, set within shrubland vegetation.

The species' restriction to a single small wetland makes it one of the most geographically restricted killies known, and any degradation or drainage of that site would likely extirpate the entire species.

Feeding

No stomach-content study specific to Simpsonichthys punctulatus has been published. The IUCN assessment notes that diet information for the species is inferred from other rivulids, and reports the known aquatic diet of closely related species as comprising arthropods, testate amoebae (tecamebae), and rotifers — a combination of small crustaceans, zooplankton, and microinvertebrates consistent with the guild of small, surface- and mid-water feeding killies that exploit the invertebrate bloom that follows each wet-season pool refill.

In the aquarium, Simpsonichthys punctulatus and its genus-mates are typically offered live or frozen small invertebrates: artemia nauplii and adults, daphnia, cyclops, micro-worms, and finely chopped bloodworm. Surface-active live foods are particularly effective. The small adult size constrains the practical food size; items should be well within the gape of the upturned mouth.

Mating

Simpsonichthys punctulatus is an annual killifish with a substrate-diving reproductive mode. Courtship is initiated by the male, who displays his blue-spotted flanks and red pectoral fins to the female in lateral presentations near the pool floor. Mating in South American annuals is substrate-oriented: the pair align side by side or with the male arched over the female and, at the moment of spawning, both fish dive forcefully into the soft mud or peat of the pool bottom, burying one or more eggs before rising and repeating the sequence.

The burrowing dive is not incidental — it is the functional mechanism of egg placement. The eggs must be deposited below the substrate surface to survive the desiccation of the dry season in the humid, oxygen-limited microenvironment of the mud, where diapause physiology maintains embryo viability for weeks to months. Males of Simpsonichthys species orient to the bottom during mating activity, and the pair should be provided with a sufficiently deep layer of soft peat or coconut fibre in captivity to allow the dive-and-spawn sequence to occur naturally. Hobbyist accounts for the genus record that this spawning act can be vigorous and rapid, with pairs completing multiple dives across a spawning session.

Breeding

Simpsonichthys punctulatus breeds by the annual killifish method: eggs are deposited and buried in the substrate, then passed through one or more diapause stages — arrested developmental phases during which metabolic activity is dramatically reduced — that allow the embryos to survive the dry season unscathed in the desiccated mud. When the pool refills at the onset of the next rainy season, the environmental cues (temperature change, osmotic shift, or simply re-hydration) release the diapause and the eggs hatch rapidly, producing a new generation of fry that must grow, mature, and reproduce within the wet season before the pool again dries.

Hobbyist experience with the genus, reported via the American Killifish Association and informal breeding discussions, indicates an egg incubation period of approximately four months for Simpsonichthys under standard peat-storage conditions. In practice, the aquarist collects the spawning medium (peat moss or coir) after 4–6 weeks of spawning, gently dries it to slight dampness, seals it in a plastic bag or container, and stores it at room temperature for the recommended incubation period. Re-wetting the peat in soft, slightly acidic water triggers hatching over one to several days. Fry are small at hatching but capable swimmers; first foods should be the finest live invertebrates (infusoria, paramecia, micro-worms) before graduating to artemia nauplii. Because the adult life cycle is compressed, fish can reach reproductive maturity within weeks of hatching in warm conditions. Breeding pairs should be kept in a species-only setup to minimise disturbance of the spawning substrate.

In the aquarium

Simpsonichthys punctulatus is a specialist fish for the killifish enthusiast rather than a general community species. Its small size (under 1 in), ground-hugging behaviour, and requirement for precise substrate management make it poorly suited to mixed community tanks; it is best kept in a dedicated species aquarium or paired with similarly sized, non-competitive companions that will not disturb the peat spawning layer.

A typical setup uses a small aquarium (5.5–10 US gal), dimly lit, with a dark substrate of fine peat or coconut fibre several centimetres deep to allow the spawning dive. Floating plants or surface cover reduce light levels and provide the shaded, tannin-rich conditions that approximate the species' cerrado pool habitat. Water should be soft and slightly acidic; a temperature range of approximately 72–79 °F is appropriate for the cerrado climate of central Brazil, with cooler temperatures possible during a rest period. Filtration must be gentle — sponge filters are standard — to avoid disturbing the substrate or creating currents incompatible with the fish's bottom-oriented lifestyle.

The fish is not commonly encountered in the trade but is maintained by specialist killifish societies, notably members of the American Killifish Association, who exchange eggs via peat-mail. Given the species' IUCN Vulnerable status and restriction to a single wild locality, captive maintenance carries genuine conservation value. Keepers should prioritise producing viable surplus eggs and sharing them within the hobby network to ensure continuity of the captive population independent of any single breeding group.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Simpsonichthys punctulatus as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 in November 2018, with the assessment published in the 2022 v2025-2 update. The criterion D2 designation is applied to species known from a single location — or a very restricted area of occupancy — that face a plausible future threat capable of driving rapid decline. In this case, the entire known global range of the species is one temporary swamp of approximately 0 mi² in Goiás state, Brazil.

The IUCN assessment identifies three concrete threat categories acting on this site: illegal collection for the ornamental trade (specifically export of eggs, the form in which annual killifish are most easily transported internationally); agricultural land use and conversion of the surrounding cerrado, which degrades the catchment hydrology that maintains the seasonal pool; and the proximity of the type locality to the BR-020 federal highway, which introduces associated development pressure, pollution risk, and facilitated access for collectors. Any of these threats, in isolation or combination, could alter or destroy the one known habitat patch.

The cerrado biome, where this species is endemic, is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots: more than half of its original extent has been converted to agriculture, primarily soy and cattle ranching, and the seasonal wetlands embedded in it are among the least protected habitat types in Brazil. For an annual killifish that occupies a single sub-hectare pool, the margin for error is essentially zero. Active conservation of the type locality, and the perpetuation of healthy captive populations within specialist killifish societies, represent the two practical lines of defence for this species.
