Simpsonichthys rufus is a small annual killifish native to the seasonal pools of the São Francisco River basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where it was first collected in 1997 near the town of Ibiaí. Described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa, D.T.B. Nielsen, and A.C. de Luca in 2001, it belongs to the subgenus Hypsolebias within the large Simpsonichthys assemblage — a group of brilliantly coloured South American annuals that evolved to colonise ephemeral grassland pools. Males display warm reddish-brown tones, giving the species its Latin epithet, and reach about 2 in standard length. Like all members of its group, the fish lives out its entire wild lifespan in pools that evaporate completely each dry season, entrusting the next generation to drought-resistant eggs buried in the mud.

Taxonomy & naming

Simpsonichthys rufus was formally described in 2001 in the Brazilian aquarium journal Revista Aquarium (volume 4, number 26, page 29) by Wilson J.E.M. Costa, D.T.B. Nielsen, and A.C. de Luca. The type locality is Ibiaí, near the Rio São Francisco in Minas Gerais, Brazil — a site in the central portion of the São Francisco drainage. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Simpsonichthys rufus (Costa, Nielsen & de Luca, 2001). Because the original description placed the fish in Simpsonichthys, no parenthetical shift is required for the authority.

The species is assigned to the subgenus Hypsolebias, a lineage within Simpsonichthys distinguished by certain fin-ray counts and colouration patterns. Costa's 2007 revision of the genus (Zootaxa 1669) expanded the known distribution of S. rufus — and the subgenus — to include not only the São Francisco basin but also the Tocantins, Jequitinhonha, and Jaguaribe basins, as well as isolated north-eastern coastal drainages of Brazil. This scattered, disjunct distribution across multiple river systems is typical of annual killies that colonise isolated temporary pools during episodes of high rainfall and river connectivity.

In hobbyist literature and some older checklists the fish may appear under the synonym or informal label Hypsolebias rufus, following proposals to elevate the subgenus to full generic rank — an arrangement not accepted in the current Catalog of Fishes treatment. Serious Fish sources should use Simpsonichthys rufus as the valid name.

Morphology

Simpsonichthys rufus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length (SL), as recorded by FishBase and the hobbyist site It Rains Fishes. Males are the more colourful sex: the body is suffused with reddish-brown to orange-red tones — the colour that inspired the specific epithet rufus — typically overlaid with iridescent blue-green or turquoise scale markings on the flanks, particularly toward the head and anterior body. The fins, especially the dorsal and caudal, are often ornately patterned with red, orange, and turquoise bands or spots edged in contrasting colours. The rounded caudal fin and the posteriorly positioned dorsal and anal fins are characteristic of annual killifish in this group.

Females are considerably plainer: a greyish-brown to olive base colour with little of the male's iridescence or warm pigmentation, and more uniform fins. This degree of sexual dichromatism is the rule in Simpsonichthys and serves as the primary field character separating the sexes. Meristic data recorded by It Rains Fishes include dorsal fin rays D 22, anal fin rays A 21, and approximately 27–28 lateral-line scale rows (LL ~27.5) — counts that place it comfortably within the Hypsolebias subgenus range.

Habitat

Simpsonichthys rufus inhabits seasonal rain-fed pools and temporary floodplain pans across the São Francisco River basin and several additional north-eastern Brazilian drainages, including the Tocantins, Jequitinhonha, and Jaguaribe basins. These pools form during the wet season rains — typically austral summer — and then shrink and disappear entirely over the dry months. The substrate in such pools is typically soft, dark mud or peat-rich organic sediment, and water chemistry reflects the warm, somewhat mineral-poor conditions of the Brazilian cerrado and caatinga transitional zones.

FishBase lists the species as a freshwater, pelagic (open-water column) tropical fish, consistent with life in shallow, well-lit seasonal pans rather than shaded forest streams. Temperatures in these exposed pools can fluctuate considerably over a daily cycle and swing from moderate to hot (roughly 72–86 °F) during the rainy season. The pools are generally soft to moderately hard and tend toward acidity, reflecting the lateritic and sandy soils of the interior plateau. With the onset of the dry season, water levels fall rapidly, the fish age and die, and only the egg cohort buried in the substrate carries the population forward to the next rains.

Feeding

Like the majority of Simpsonichthys species, S. rufus is a micro-predator in the wild, targeting small aquatic invertebrates — zooplankton, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and aquatic worms — that proliferate in the nutrient-rich seasonal pools. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2 (± 0.4 SE), indicating a carnivorous to omnivorous diet positioned toward the base of the food web, consistent with a fish feeding primarily on invertebrates rather than other fish.

In captivity, the species accepts a wide range of live and frozen invertebrate foods: Artemia nauplii (brine shrimp larvae) are the standard fry food and are taken eagerly by adults as well; Daphnia, Moina, Cyclops, Grindal worms, micro-worms, and frozen bloodworm are all suitable. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals but should not form the bulk of the diet. Feeding small live or frozen invertebrates two to three times daily supports the rapid growth rate that annual fish require to reach breeding condition before the pool dries.

Mating

Simpsonichthys rufus is an annual killifish with an egg-burying reproductive strategy. In seasonal pools that dry completely each year, the fish cannot deposit eggs on plants, on the surface, or in the water column — all of these would perish when the pool evaporates. Instead, the species evolved a substrate-spawning system in which the pair drives together into the soft mud or peat at the bottom of the pool and deposits eggs directly into the sediment, where desiccation-resistant diapause eggs can survive the dry season in dormancy.

Male courtship involves brilliant colour display and direct approach to the female, with males competing intensively when females are present — the striking red and turquoise colouration of the male functions as both a signal of genetic quality and a cue for female mate choice. When a female is receptive, the pair align side-by-side or slightly oblique and plunge simultaneously into the substrate surface; the brief dive is the spawning act, depositing eggs in the top layer of mud. The pair surfaces and may repeat the dive numerous times over a spawning session, depositing eggs across a wide area of the pool floor.

Breeding

Eggs of Simpsonichthys rufus buried in the substrate are drought-resistant: they enter diapause — arrested embryonic development — and survive through the dry season in the desiccated mud. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs resume development and hatch into fry that are immediately free-living. In the wild this cycle is annual, with life spans recorded at roughly 6–8 months in the field; captive fish may live 10–12 months under good conditions.

In the aquarium the standard annual killi breeding method closely mimics the natural system. A layer of peat or coir fibre (1–2 in deep) is provided in the bottom of the spawning tank. The pair spawns into this substrate over several weeks; spawning activity by It Rains Fishes is described as the pair dividing entirely into the peat during each spawning act. After the spawning period, the peat is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess moisture, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at room temperature (70–79 °F) for 8–10 weeks — the minimum diapause period recorded for this species at that temperature range. At the end of storage, the peat is re-wetted with aged soft water and fry appear within 24–48 hours. First foods are infusoria, Paramecium, or commercial micro-fry powder; Artemia nauplii are introduced after a week as the fry grow rapidly. Because the animals are short-lived, multiple clutches of eggs can be taken across a season to build up stock.

In the aquarium

Simpsonichthys rufus is a rewarding but specialised aquarium fish suited to hobbyists familiar with annual killifish husbandry. The species is small (2 in SL) and peaceful toward fishes too large to eat, but males may quarrel with one another; the recommended arrangement is one male with two or more females in a dedicated species tank of modest size (10–15 US gal is ample). A tight-fitting lid is essential, as killies are strong jumpers.

Water should be soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral (pH roughly 6.0–7.0), and warm (72–82 °F). Peat filtration or the use of Indian almond leaves helps acidify and tannin-stain the water to approximate natural pool chemistry. The substrate should include a spawning medium — a layer of peat or coir — even when not actively breeding, since the fish will use it instinctively. Live and frozen invertebrate foods are strongly preferred over dry foods; twice-daily feeding of varied invertebrate items keeps the fish in breeding condition.

Because wild populations are tied to single localities or small groups of seasonal pools, and because the hobby's captive lines represent genetic material that may not be replaceable if those pools are lost, responsible keepers record the provenance of their stock and avoid hybridising populations from different drainages. The killifish hobby's established network of clubs and specialist groups (such as the American Killifish Association and its European counterparts) maintains studbook-style records for many Simpsonichthys populations, and sourcing fish through these channels is strongly encouraged over wild-caught imports.

Conservation

Simpsonichthys rufus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently listed as Not Evaluated (NE). This gap is common for Brazilian annual killies — the group is speciose, the taxonomy is still being resolved, and many species were described relatively recently. The absence of an IUCN assessment does not imply security; it reflects limited assessment capacity relative to the number of species involved.

The species' narrow dependence on seasonal pools in the São Francisco basin and additional north-eastern Brazilian drainages makes it inherently vulnerable. The São Francisco basin has experienced severe water stress over recent decades: large-scale irrigation for agriculture, the São Francisco River diversion project (Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco), groundwater extraction, and riparian deforestation have reduced and fragmented the seasonal wetlands on which annual killies depend. Temporary pools are easily drained, filled, or contaminated, and because annual killifish cannot migrate between pool systems once the dry season begins, any pool that is destroyed eliminates the local population permanently.

Additional threats across the genus include the introduction of non-native fish — particularly livebearers such as Poecilia reticulata and mosquitofish Gambusia — into temporary pools for malaria control; these species reproduce continuously and outcompete or predate annual killi fry and eggs. The hobbyist community plays a meaningful role in maintaining insurance populations of rare Simpsonichthys species, and the rigorous documentation of collection locality on captive fish ensures that conservation-relevant genetic diversity is preserved even if wild pool habitats are lost.
