Taxonomy & naming
Beaufortia liui was described by the Chinese ichthyologist H. W. Chang in 1944, in his monograph "Notes of the fishes of western Szechwan and eastern Sikang" (Sinensia 15(1-6):27-60). The specific epithet honours Cheng-chao Liu (1900–1976), herpetologist at West China Union University — a common practice of Chang's in naming fishes from the Sichuan–Xikang region after colleagues.
The genus Beaufortia sits within the family Gastromyzontidae (sometimes rendered as a subfamily of Balitoridae in older literature), the torrent or sucker loaches of Cypriniformes. The taxonomy of this group has been revised repeatedly, and the family name Gastromyzontidae — distinct from the riverine balitorids — is now widely used. FishBase and the ETYFish project both place Beaufortia in Gastromyzontidae. The Catalog of Fishes governs the current valid combination: Beaufortia liui Chang, 1944.
Morphology
Like every member of its family, Beaufortia liui is a dorso-ventrally flattened fish shaped by life in fast water. The body is broad, low and streamlined, and the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are splayed horizontally to form a friction pad that, together with the specially modified oral disc, functions as a powerful sucker on bare rock. This adaptation lets the fish hold station in torrent conditions where a conventionally shaped fish would be swept away.
Maximum reported standard length is 2 in, making it a compact species even by hillstream standards. The skin is near-scaleless — a trait shared across the family — which reduces drag in fast current but also makes the fish sensitive to copper and many aquarium medications. There is no erectile suborbital spine in Gastromyzontidae (that feature belongs to the botiid loaches); instead the defensive and rheophilic suite centres entirely on body form and fin posture.
Habitat
Beaufortia liui is native to western Sichuan and eastern Xikang (now the western Sichuan–Tibet border region) in China — upland drainages of the upper Yangtze system. Its congener B. kweichowensis, whose ecology is well documented by Seriously Fish, inhabits shallow, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated headwaters and minor tributaries with riffles, runs, pools and cascades — and this general ecology applies to Beaufortia as a genus. The water is cold to cool, clear, low in nutrients, and flows over rock, gravel and coarse sand.
This is definitively not a warm, still-water fish. The dissolved oxygen levels in torrent habitats are at or near saturation, and Beaufortia species are physiologically adapted to that richness; they cannot extract sufficient oxygen from the warmer, still water of a typical tropical community tank. The substrate is scoured clean rock and coarse gravel — the precise surface on which biofilm accumulates and from which the fish feeds.
Feeding
Beaufortia liui is an obligate aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its oral disc, it rasps diatoms, algae, periphyton and the microscopic invertebrates embedded in biofilm from hard surfaces in fast-flowing streams. This is a highly specialised feeding niche: the food is low in energy per unit surface area, so the fish must graze continuously across a large area of rock to meet its needs.
In the aquarium, this creates the most common cause of death for hillstream loaches: starvation in a clean or newly set-up tank. Beaufortia requires a mature aquarium in which algae and biofilm have had weeks or months to colonise rock and glass. A biofilm-free tank, however chemically ideal, is a bare larder. Supplemental feeding with blanched vegetables (spinach, courgette, cucumber), algae wafers and small frozen foods (daphnia, micro-worm) can extend the diet, but these fish do not thrive on wafers alone and need the established biofilm layer as their dietary foundation.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Beaufortia is subtle and incompletely described for this species. In related hillstream loaches, mature females are generally fuller-bodied when in breeding condition, but reliable external sexing is difficult. In the wild, reproduction is likely tied to seasonal water temperature and flow fluctuations — the cooling of hill streams in the dry season and the increase in flow and food supply that accompanies the monsoon cycle — cues that are challenging to replicate in a home aquarium.
Data on courtship behaviour in B. liui specifically are sparse. Extrapolating from the genus and family, males likely compete for access to females on suitable spawning substrates (fine gravel or rock crevices in flowing water), but no detailed behavioural observations for this species are on record in the available literature.
Breeding
Beaufortia liui is not established as a species bred in home aquaria. Like most hillstream loaches, it is an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release eggs into fast water over gravel or stone substrates, with no parental care after spawning. A few hillstream loach species — notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, strongly flowing river-tank set-ups where mature biofilm, high oxygen and cool temperatures approximate the native stream, but verified spawnings of Beaufortia in captivity are not documented in the sources available.
For a keeper wishing to attempt breeding, the requirements would mirror those of the genus at its best: a large aquarium running a powerful flow (ideally with a powerhead or spray bar creating surface agitation), cool temperatures, high oxygen saturation, very mature biofilm coverage, and a sex-confirmed pair or small group. The absence of any documented home spawning for this species means honest expectations are low; it should be kept for enjoyment, not for breeding goals.
In the aquarium
Beaufortia liui demands conditions that diverge sharply from the warm, still tropical community tank. The fundamental requirements are cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a mature, biofilm-coated aquascape. Temperature should sit in the cooler subtropical range appropriate for Sichuan upland streams — not the 79–82 °F of a standard tropical set-up. A powerful flow from multiple powerheads or a dedicated river manifold, combined with intense surface agitation for gas exchange, is not optional; it is the physiological baseline. Water quality must be excellent: hillstream loaches are intolerant of elevated nitrates and ammonia.
The tank interior should be rock-heavy — flat stones, slate, smooth river cobbles — colonised over several months with green and brown algae and biofilm before any hillstream loach is introduced. A bare or recently set-up tank is unsuitable. Because the skin is near-scaleless, Beaufortia is sensitive to copper-based treatments and concentrated medications; any medication use should be at reduced doses with careful observation. Given the small adult size (under 2.5 in) a dedicated hillstream tank of 15–20 US gal or more, heavily stocked with rock and running a vigorous current, is appropriate; it can be kept with other hillstream-adapted fish of similar size and flow preferences.
Conservation
Beaufortia liui has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category. Data on its population size and distribution are sparse — the species is known from the upland drainages of western Sichuan and eastern Xikang, a region of the upper Yangtze basin, but systematic survey data are not available in the accessible literature.
The pressures facing hillstream loaches across China's upland river systems include hydropower development (dams alter both flow regimes and water temperature, eliminating the fast, cold, well-oxygenated conditions these fish require), sedimentation from agriculture and deforestation, and — in a few regions — collection for the aquarium trade. Beaufortia liui is not commonly encountered in the international trade, so collection pressure is probably low for this species specifically, but the broader threats to torrent-fish habitat in southern China are real and documented. A formal IUCN assessment would be valuable.
