Beaufortia szechuanensis is a small, flattened hillstream loach from the cool, fast-flowing tributaries of the upper Yangtze River in Sichuan Province, China. Its body is a living suction disc — flattened on the underside and fringed with paired fins that press it flush against bare rock in water that would sweep an ordinary fish away. It reaches about 3 in standard length and spends its days rasping biofilm and diatoms from stone in cold, torrential, oxygen-rich streams at elevations that hover around 600 metres. In the aquarium it demands mature, strongly-circulating water and a rockscape smothered in established algae; without those things it quietly starves, which is the commonest way it is lost. It is rarely traded and has never been bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia szechuanensis was first described by the Chinese ichthyologist Ping-Chih Fang in 1930, from specimens collected at Omei-shien in western Szechuan (now Sichuan) Province. The original description placed it under the author's patronymic, so the authority is written with parentheses — (Fang, 1930) — signalling a subsequent generic transfer. The species was historically referenced under the old genus Gastromyzon, and some aquarium literature still uses Gastromyzon szechuanensis; the current valid placement in Beaufortia is supported by both conventional taxonomy and by a 2015 mitochondrial genome study that confirmed its position within the family Balitoridae.

Beaufortia is a genus of hillstream or torrent loaches in the subfamily Balitorinae, family Balitoridae, order Cypriniformes. The family Balitoridae (river loaches, hillstream loaches) is a large, diverse Old-World group distributed across South and East Asia, characterised by the ventral-sucker body plan that allows life on rocks in swift current. Within Balitoridae, Beaufortia is one of several genera of the Chinese torrent-loach lineage; its nearest traded relatives include the Hong Kong pleco (Beaufortia kweichowensis) and the butterfly hillstream loach (Sewellia lineolata). The species epithet szechuanensis is simply a Latinised form of the province name — 'of Sichuan'.

Morphology

The body plan of Beaufortia szechuanensis is wholly adapted to life in fast water. The fish is strongly depressed — flattened from back to belly — with a broad, rounded head and a wide, ventrally opening mouth surrounded by modified lips that function as a scraping organ and, together with the pectoral and pelvic fins, form an adhesive disc that anchors the fish to rock against strong currents. Seen from above, it has a leaf-like silhouette; from the side it barely registers as a fish. The maximum recorded standard length is 3 in, making it a small species even by hillstream standards.

The skin is near-scaleless and smooth; a few small embedded scales are present but the fish has essentially none of the hard armour that would make it robust. This bare skin is significant in the aquarium: Beaufortia, like other balitorids, is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength chemical treatments. The dorsal surface is mottled brown and grey, cryptically matching the rock and biofilm of its stream bed; the underside is pale. No prominent suborbital spine is present — that feature belongs to the botiid and cobitid loaches; Beaufortia relies on its suction grip rather than a spine for defence.

Habitat

Beaufortia szechuanensis is native to clear, swift, high-elevation tributaries of the upper Yangtze River system in Sichuan Province, China. The type locality is Omei-shien (the Emei Shan area), at an elevation of roughly 1903 ft (1,900 feet); records extend to the Qing He, Ming He, Wu He and Da Ning He drainages. The water in these headwater streams is cool throughout the year — Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 68–75 °F (68–75 °F) — well-oxygenated, and essentially torrential over smooth bedrock and boulders. Visibility is high; suspended sediment is low; dissolved minerals are moderate (neutral to slightly alkaline pH, medium-hard water).

This is not a tropical lowland fish. The streams it inhabits are rheophilic environments — fast, cold, clear, and perpetually flushed with dissolved oxygen. The fish lives on the upper surfaces of submerged rock, anchored by its suction disc, grazing the thin layer of algae, diatoms and biofilm that forms on stone exposed to bright, fast-moving water. It is a species of the current-face, not the slack channel, and essentially never encounters still or warm water in the wild.

Feeding

Beaufortia szechuanensis is an aufwuchs grazer — its primary food is the thin community of algae, diatoms, protists and organic detritus collectively called biofilm that coats submerged rock in well-lit, fast-flowing streams. The scraping lips and flattened snout are structurally suited to this: the fish presses its mouth against stone and rasps, dislodging and ingesting the surface layer. It does not chase or pursue food; it crawls steadily over rock, grazing as it goes.

In the aquarium, this biology defines both the diet and the setup. The fish must have a mature rockscape where biofilm and algae have had months to develop — a newly established tank offers little or nothing for it to eat, and it will starve before the keeper notices. The minimum practical feeding programme combines a well-established algae film on glass and rock with supplemental offerings: algae wafers and spirulina wafers placed directly on a stone, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber), and small frozen foods such as mysis shrimp or bloodworm to supply protein. Variety and a mature tank are both non-negotiable. It is not a cleanup crew fish and not a generic algae eater; it is a specialist grazer with specific nutritional needs.

Mating

Almost nothing is known about the mating behaviour of Beaufortia szechuanensis in the wild, and the species has not been observed mating in captivity. The few available hillstream loach breeding records from closely related genera suggest that sexual dimorphism — where present at all — is subtle, with females becoming noticeably broader across the body when gravid. In Beaufortia, distinguishing males from females reliably is not possible from external appearance alone without a close examination of a ripe female.

In nature, spawning in hillstream loaches is presumed to be linked to seasonal cues — changes in water temperature, flow rate, and day length tied to the spring and early summer flush in mountain streams. The fish are thought to deposit eggs among fine gravel or within the biofilm matrix on rock surfaces, but direct observation is lacking for this genus in the wild. Given that the species is rarely traded and captive experience is minimal, the mating system remains essentially undescribed.

Breeding

Beaufortia szechuanensis has not been bred in captivity; Seriously Fish notes the absence of captive spawning records, and no reports in the hobby literature describe a confirmed spawning. Like most hillstream loaches it is assumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — eggs are deposited on or among stones or buried in fine gravel in fast-flowing water and left to develop without guarding or tending by either parent. This is the general pattern across Balitoridae, and a handful of genus-level exceptions (notably Sewellia lineolata, which has been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks) demonstrate that it is biologically possible in the family — just not yet achieved with Beaufortia.

For the keeper, the honest position is that breeding this species should not be expected. The combination of cool, high-flow water, a mature biofilm-covered environment, and the correct seasonal temperature and photoperiod gradient would be the logical starting conditions for any attempt, but the species is too rarely kept — and too poorly studied — for a reliable method to have been established. This is a fish to keep for the pleasure of watching it in a well-maintained river tank, not one to acquire with the intention of producing fry.

In the aquarium

Beaufortia szechuanensis is an unforgiving fish for the unprepared. The setup must be correct before the fish is bought — not adjusted afterward. The single most important requirement is flow: the tank needs strong, turbulent circulation, typically 10–15 times the tank volume per hour, delivered in a way that creates visible surface agitation and moves water vigorously across the rockscape. Canister filters with spray bars, powerheads pointed at the surface, or a wavemaker in a longer tank are all suitable; a standard hang-on-back filter is not. High dissolved oxygen is inseparable from high flow — the fish breathes fast, oxygen-saturated water and does not tolerate a stagnant or warm, low-oxygen environment.

The second requirement is maturity. The tank must be fully cycled and then left to grow algae and biofilm across its rocks and glass for several months before this species is added. A bare or newly established tank has no food on its surfaces; the fish will pick at the rock and find nothing, and it will slowly weaken and die. Smooth river pebbles, slate, or smooth sandstone arranged to allow the fish to move freely across their faces give the best surface area for biofilm development. A soft sandy substrate between rocks is appropriate. The water should be kept at 68–75 °F (68–75 °F) — notably cooler than most community tropical tanks — at a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (around 7.0–7.5) in moderately hard water.

Beaufortia szechuanensis is peaceful toward other fish and will coexist with other cool-water species that tolerate the same flow. A small group of three to five individuals is better than a singleton, as the fish are more active and less stressed when conspecifics are present. Because it is near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength chemical treatments; any disease medication must be used at reduced doses and with close observation. It is a long-lived species in good conditions — hillstream loaches regularly reach eight years or more — so a proper setup repays the investment over time.

Conservation

Beaufortia szechuanensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its known range is restricted to high-elevation tributaries of the upper Yangtze in Sichuan Province, a drainage that has seen significant hydrological modification over recent decades through dam construction, channelisation, and sedimentation from land-use change in the Yangtze headwaters. For a fish that depends on clear, fast, cool water over clean bedrock, these pressures are directly threatening to habitat quality even in the absence of targeted collection.

The species is rarely traded — Seriously Fish notes that it is unlikely to have been exported at any scale compared to the more commonly available Beaufortia kweichowensis — so the ornamental trade is probably not a significant pressure. The greater risk to populations is the ongoing alteration of Sichuan's mountain stream systems. Until a formal range-wide survey and Red List assessment are completed, the conservation status of this species remains genuinely unknown.
