Sinogastromyzon sichangensis is a small, disc-bodied hillstream loach endemic to the fast, clear tributaries of the upper Yangtze River system in south-central China. It reaches about 3 in in standard length, clings to boulders and gravel in torrent-fast water by means of a sucker formed from its enlarged, fused pelvic fins, and rasps biofilm and algae off rock surfaces in the manner of all true hillstream loaches. In the aquarium it is a species of exacting conditions — cool temperatures, powerful flow, and a mature rockscape thick with biofilm — and dies quickly in the warm, still, bare tanks that the trade too often assigns it to. Get those conditions right, and it is a hardy, long-lived oddity with a convincingly alien silhouette; get them wrong, and it starves and suffocates in weeks.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon sichangensis was described by Chang in 1944 from material collected in the Jinsha River, the principal headwater reach of the Yangtze (Chang-jiang), and its tributaries in Sichuan province. The genus name Sinogastromyzon translates roughly as 'Chinese belly-sucker', combining the Greek gaster (belly) and myzon (to suck) with the Latinized Sino- prefix for China — a reference to the ventral suction apparatus that is the group's defining character. The species epithet sichangensis places the fish in Sichuan (historically rendered Szechwan or Sichuan in Western transliteration), the province where the type series originated.

The species belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches or river loaches), the torrent-specialist sister family to the botiid and cobitid loaches. Within Balitoridae, Sinogastromyzon is a Chinese endemic genus of moderate size, its members confined to fast-water systems draining the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau and the Sichuan basin. Phylogenetic work using mitochondrial genome data has confirmed the species' validity and supports the family-level placement in Balitoridae. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Chang's 1944 combination as valid and no synonym is currently in common use.

Morphology

The most striking feature of Sinogastromyzon sichangensis is its radical body plan. The ventral surface is almost flat, with the pectoral and pelvic fins greatly enlarged and spread laterally to form a broad adhesion platform — functionally a sucker — that allows the fish to hold its position against current velocities that would dislodge most other freshwater fish. The dorsal profile is low and streamlined, reducing drag. The head is depressed and wide, with a downward-pointing mouth equipped for scraping aufwuchs from rock surfaces. Total length reaches approximately 3 in (standard length), with individuals recorded at weights up to 11 g.

Skin texture is a keeper-relevant detail: like most balitorids, S. sichangensis has reduced, deeply embedded scales and skin that is effectively near-naked to the touch. This makes the fish sensitive to copper-based treatments and demands careful medication practices. The suborbital spine found in botiid loaches is absent in balitorids; Sinogastromyzon lacks that defensive armament, relying instead on its adhesive grip and cryptic coloration over stone. Ground colour is brownish-grey with darker mottling that blends into the rocky substrate of its native streams.

Habitat

Sinogastromyzon sichangensis is endemic to China, known from the Jinsha River (the upper Yangtze) and its tributaries including the Anning and Qing rivers, across Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Hubei provinces. It is a rheophilic species — a torrent specialist that lives in the fast, shallow, highly oxygenated sections of hill streams and river rapids where current velocities are high enough to deter most other fish. The substrate is rock and coarse gravel, scoured clean by the current and colonised by thick biofilm and algal growth that supplies the fish's food.

Water chemistry in these environments is cool, clear and well-aerated. Field data and FishBase records indicate the species is subtropical, experiencing temperatures in the range of approximately 68–75 °F (68–74 °F); water above 75–79 °F reduces dissolved oxygen rapidly and physiologically stresses the fish. pH sits in a neutral to slightly alkaline range consistent with the Yangtze drainage — around 7.0–8.0. This is emphatically not a warm-tropical species, and placing it in a heated community tank at 79–82 °F is one of the most reliable ways to kill it.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon sichangensis is an aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps the biofilm — the living mat of algae, diatoms, bacteria, protists and organic detritus — directly from the surface of boulders and bedrock in fast current. Its downward-pointing mouth and flattened head are anatomical adaptations to that lifestyle, not to chasing prey through open water.

The single most important fact for an aquarist is that this fish requires a mature, densely biofilm-covered rockscape to feed on; it will starve to death in a bare or newly established tank that carries little or no algal growth. Biofilm takes weeks to months to develop on rock surfaces, and newly set-up tanks cannot support hillstream loaches. Supplementary feeding with frozen Daphnia, small bloodworm and blanched greens such as courgette or spinach broadens the diet and is well accepted, but these are supplements, not substitutes, for the grazing activity the fish performs constantly across its rock surfaces. Flake food falling through the water column is of limited use to a fish designed to feed against a substrate.

Mating

Relatively little is recorded about mate-choice or courtship behaviour in Sinogastromyzon sichangensis specifically. As with most hillstream loaches, sexual dimorphism is slight and practical sexing is difficult outside the breeding season. Mature females are typically fuller-bodied when gravid, and males of some Sinogastromyzon species develop tubercles or nuptial coloration during the breeding period, but these distinctions are not always reliable or consistent across individuals.

In the wild, reproduction is assumed to follow the seasonal pattern of highland Chinese streams, with spawning likely triggered by the combination of temperature drop, rising water levels after spring rains, and increased flow. The fish would move into fast-water margins and gravel reaches to spawn under those conditions — seasonal cues that are difficult to replicate precisely in a home aquarium.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon sichangensis is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Ripe fish shed eggs over and among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water; neither parent guards or tends the eggs after spawning. This is the standard breeding strategy across Balitoridae.

Verified spawning of this species in home aquaria is rare to undocumented. A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been bred in mature, powerfully-flowing river tanks, and some Sinogastromyzon relatives (such as S. nantaiensis) have reportedly spawned under similar conditions. For most genera, including this one, however, captive breeding remains the exception rather than the rule. The combination of precise water-quality demands, the need for a well-established biofilm rockscape, and the difficulty in conditioning a pair or group makes home breeding a specialist undertaking. Aquarists keeping this species should regard reproduction as a bonus, not an expectation, and be prepared to invest months in maturing a suitable tank before any attempt is plausible.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon sichangensis will thrive in a tank designed around its biology, and decline rapidly in one that ignores it. The non-negotiable requirements are cool water (68–75 °F / 68–74 °F — a chiller is often necessary in summer), powerful current from a powerhead or spray bar, excellent oxygenation through surface agitation, and a mature rockscape that has had weeks to develop a thick algal and biofilm coating. A tank of 30 US gal or larger, with a longer footprint to allow a current corridor, is the appropriate minimum. Water quality must be high: weekly 30% water changes with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water are standard practice.

The near-scaleless skin means copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many other treatments should be avoided; use half-doses and loach-safe products where possible. Unlike the obligate-social botiid loaches, hillstream loaches are less rigidly group-dependent, but conspecifics or compatible species (other hillstream loaches of similar size and flow requirements) are appreciated in a sufficiently roomy tank. This fish is incompatible with typical community aquaria: the warm temperatures, low current and bare or planted décor of a community tank are the conditions it cannot survive in. The reward for correct setup is a hardy, fascinating animal with a gecko-like adhesion to glass and rock that attracts attention from every visitor to the aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sinogastromyzon sichangensis as Least Concern in January 2011, reflecting a range that, while restricted to the upper Yangtze drainage of south-central China, is sufficiently large and the populations apparently stable enough to place it out of immediate threat. The species does not appear to be collected for the aquarium trade at significant commercial scale.

As an endemic of Chinese highland streams, S. sichangensis shares the long-term vulnerabilities common to the upper Yangtze ichthyofauna: hydroelectric development on the Jinsha River and its tributaries, water abstraction and pollution from agricultural and industrial sources, and sedimentation from catchment disturbance. The Three Gorges and Baihetan dam projects have altered discharge and thermal regimes in parts of the Yangtze system, and further dam construction in the Jinsha headwaters continues. None of these pressures has yet driven a documented population collapse in this species, but rheophilic endemics with restricted distributions are structurally vulnerable to habitat change in ways that stable present-day numbers may not capture.
