Taxonomy & naming
Glaniopsis multiradiata was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1982, based on specimens collected from fast-flowing hill streams in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The genus Glaniopsis was itself established much earlier, and Roberts placed this species within it on the strength of its skeletal anatomy and, critically, its distinctively elevated ray counts in both the pectoral and pelvic fins — the character that the specific epithet multiradiata directly commemorates.
The family assignment has shifted with successive revisions of the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Glaniopsis is placed in Balitoridae (the river loaches or hillstream loaches), a family whose internal taxonomy has been repeatedly reorganised. The species is listed in the Catalog of Fishes under Glaniopsis multiradiata Roberts, 1982, and that combination remains current. No synonyms are on record. The fish resembles Liniparhomaloptera disparis disparis closely enough that it occasionally contaminates trade shipments of that species, so correct identification at the point of purchase matters.
Morphology
Glaniopsis multiradiata is a small, strongly flattened loach reaching approximately 2.5–3 in in standard length. The body is dorsoventrally depressed from snout to tail, with the underside forming a broad, near-flat surface: the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and spread wide, and together with the flattened belly they create a hydrodynamic seal that holds the fish to the substrate in fast current. This body plan is the defining character of true hillstream loaches and is instantly recognisable. The head is broad and blunt, the mouth inferior and modified for rasping, and the body is nearly scaleless — the skin feels smooth rather than scaly to the touch.
The name-bearing character is the fin-ray count. The pectoral and pelvic fins both carry more rays than other members of Glaniopsis, a distinction Roberts used to diagnose the species at description. Coloration is cryptic — brownish or olive with variable darker banding and mottling that blends with the biofilm-covered rock of its native habitat. The species carries no erectile suborbital spine of the kind found in botiid loaches; the balitorid body plan trades that defensive structure for the substrate-clinging hydrofoil design.
Habitat
Glaniopsis multiradiata inhabits the fast-flowing, rocky riffles and cascades of hill streams in northern Borneo — type locality is Sarawak, Malaysia, with distribution extending into parts of Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). These are clear, cool, torrential waters running over bare rock and coarse gravel at elevations above the lowland flood plain. Water temperatures in the recorded range run from about 68–75 °F; at the lower end these are distinctly cool conditions relative to typical aquarium tropical fishes. Dissolved oxygen is high — the broken, turbulent surface of a riffle stream keeps water close to saturation — and that oxygen richness is not incidental but essential to this fish's physiology.
The substrate is rock and cobble, typically carpeted with a thin but nutritionally rich film of diatoms, periphyton and algae that the fish grazes continually. Detritus and fine organic material accumulate in sheltered crevices. The water is soft to moderately hard (up to around 12 dH on available records) and near-neutral in pH (approximately 7.0–8.0). These clear, cool, oxygen-rich streams are far removed from the warm, tannin-stained, sluggish tropical waters of popular imagination.
Feeding
Glaniopsis multiradiata is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In nature it spends its life rasping diatoms, periphyton, algae and the associated microscopic invertebrates from rock surfaces in the current. This grazing lifestyle is physiologically obligate: the inferior mouth is structured for scraping rather than engulfing prey, and the fish is not adapted to hunt for discrete food items drifting in open water.
In the aquarium this diet translates to a critical dependency on a mature biofilm-covered rockscape — a tank set up yesterday, or a bare-bottomed one, will slowly starve this species even if food is offered. The most common keeper failure is exactly this: assuming that dropping algae wafers or sinking pellets into an immature tank is sufficient. It is not. A well-established tank with algae-covered rocks is the foundation, supplemented by blanched greens (spinach, kale, courgette), sinking algae wafers, and small frozen foods such as bloodworm and mysis shrimp to supply protein. Bright lighting that promotes algal growth on the tank glass and rocks is a practical requirement, not a preference.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Glaniopsis multiradiata is poorly understood. As in most hillstream loaches, females are thought to become more rounded in the body when in breeding condition, but the two sexes are otherwise externally similar and there is no reliable field character reported in the literature. Determining the sex of a fish in typical trade condition is therefore difficult, and assembling a breeding group requires either obtaining a number of individuals and hoping the sexes are represented, or careful observation of body depth over time.
The mating biology of this species is essentially undocumented. Extrapolating from the group: hillstream loaches in faster-water genera are presumed to spawn during or shortly after periods of peak flow, when cool, oxygen-saturated water is most abundant and food (biofilm) is richest. Whether Glaniopsis undertakes any form of lek or territory-holding, or simply spawns opportunistically among the substrate, is not recorded. Given that aquarium spawning has never been documented for this species, observations remain entirely from the wild and are sparse.
Breeding
No successful aquarium breeding of Glaniopsis multiradiata has been documented. This is consistent with the broader picture for hillstream loaches: most genera are not bred in home aquaria, and verified spawnings across the entire balitorid family are limited to a handful of species — most famously Sewellia lineolata, which has spawned in strongly-flowing river tanks, depositing eggs among stones with no parental care. Based on the family pattern, Glaniopsis would be an egg-scatterer placing adhesive eggs in crevices or among gravel in fast water, with no subsequent parental involvement. But this is inference, not observation.
The trade in this species, where it is imported at all, relies on wild collection. There is no record of hormone-induced farm production. A keeper who obtains this fish should expect to enjoy it without any reasonable prospect of breeding it — the honest position for virtually all hillstream loaches outside the small number of well-documented exceptions.
In the aquarium
Keeping Glaniopsis multiradiata well is a technically demanding exercise, and most failures trace to three requirements that differ sharply from mainstream tropical fishkeeping. First, temperature: this is a cool-water species, thriving at 68–75 °F — the warmer end of a standard tropical aquarium (79–82 °F) will stress and eventually kill it. An unheated or chilled tank in a cool room is typically needed, and this alone disqualifies it for many community setups. Second, flow and oxygen: the tank must deliver near-torrential flow over a rocky hardscape. Multiple powerheads or a dedicated river-manifold setup are the standard approach; a simple canister filter outlet will not provide anything approaching the flow this species requires. Third, the substrate must be biologically mature — rocks and glass densely covered with diatom and algal biofilm. A new tank, regardless of how well it is mechanically filtered, cannot support this species.
Being near-scaleless, Glaniopsis multiradiata should be treated with caution when medications are required: copper-based treatments and standard-strength ich remedies can harm or kill it. Half-strength dosing and copper-free formulations are recommended. The species is not a botiid loach and does not carry a suborbital spine, so netting is less hazardous than with clown or yoyo loaches, but its small size and riverine fragility make handling stressful. Water quality must be pristine — the cool, fast streams it comes from are among the most oligotrophic freshwater environments, and a tank with elevated nitrates or declining oxygen will quickly push this fish into decline. It is a fish for the experienced loach keeper with appropriate equipment, not a beginner's purchase.
Conservation
Glaniopsis multiradiata is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated January 2019. The DD rating reflects a genuine information gap: the species is a narrow-range endemic of northern Borneo hill streams, but systematic surveys of its population size, habitat extent and trends are lacking. A small range in a single island combined with habitat vulnerability is an inherently precarious combination, even if a formal threat level cannot be assigned.
The hill streams of Borneo face well-documented pressures: deforestation and the associated increases in sedimentation and nutrient run-off can devastate the clear, clean, fast-flowing riffles that obligate torrent loaches depend on. Logging, agricultural conversion (including oil palm expansion), small-scale gold mining and road construction all affect catchment hydrology. The species is rarely imported into the aquarium trade and is not believed to face significant collection pressure, but the combined stresses on Bornean freshwater habitats mean that even a genuinely uncommon species with no commercial significance can face attrition through habitat degradation rather than exploitation. More field survey work is needed before any reassessment can move this species out of the data-deficient category.
