Hypergastromyzon sambas is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, described by Heok Hee Tan in 2021 from fast-flowing streams of the Sambas district of West Kalimantan, Borneo. Like its congeners in the genus Hypergastromyzon, it is a flattened, sucker-bodied rheophile that clings to rock faces in cold, surging, highly oxygenated torrent water, rasping aufwuchs and biofilm from the substrate. It was described only recently and remains almost unknown in the aquarium hobby, but its biology follows the hillstream template faithfully: a cool-water, high-flow specialist that starves in a still or newly-set-up tank and suffocates without strong aeration — demanding conditions that must be met before the fish is considered.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypergastromyzon sambas was formally described by Heok Hee Tan in 2021. The species epithet sambas refers to the Sambas region of West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, from which the type material was collected — a straightforward toponym honouring the locality of first collection.

The genus Hypergastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream loaches, within the superfamily Cobitoidea. Balitoridae has undergone considerable revision over the past two decades as molecular phylogenies have resolved the tangled relationships of the torrent-adapted loaches of Asia, and generic boundaries within the hillstream group continue to be refined. Hypergastromyzon is an East Asian hillstream genus closely allied with Gastromyzon, both centred on Borneo's swift highland streams. The genus name combines the Greek hyper (above, beyond) with Gastromyzon, the related Bornean hillstream genus, pointing to a position within or beyond that group in the original comparative sense.

Because the species was described in 2021, it has not yet been assessed by the IUCN and is currently Not Evaluated. No synonyms are recorded.

Morphology

As a member of Hypergastromyzon, H. sambas shares the hallmark body plan of the hillstream loaches: the body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide and held close to the substrate to form a hydrodynamic sucker-disc that generates lift against the current. This adaptation allows the fish to cling to smooth rock faces in conditions where a round-bodied fish would be swept away immediately. The head is broad and depressed, with a fleshy, downward-facing mouth suited to scraping biofilm from stone.

The body is covered in small, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin with a near-naked texture that is highly sensitive to water-quality fluctuations and to medications. The body coloration in the genus typically consists of a brown or olive-grey dorsum with a patterned network of pale spots, reticulations or saddle-marks that provide camouflage against the stony stream bottom; precise colour description for H. sambas specifically awaits detailed published photography. As a small hillstream loach the species is likely to remain under 2 in in total length, consistent with the size range of its congeners, though published measurements for this species are not yet widely available.

Habitat

Hypergastromyzon sambas is native to fast hill streams of the Sambas district of West Kalimantan, on the Indonesian portion of Borneo. These are rocky torrent habitats: clear, cool, swift-flowing streams draining forested uplands where water tumbles over exposed boulders, cobble and bedrock, constantly churned and oxygenated by rapids. The water is typically cool relative to the surrounding lowland tropics — many hillstream genera in Borneo occupy streams at elevation where temperatures are measurably lower than the surrounding ambient — and is highly oxygenated, with dissolved oxygen levels near saturation.

The substrate is clean rock, stone and gravel with little or no silt, carpeted in a thin growth of algae, diatoms and biofilm. This biofilm layer is the primary food source and is dependent on the combination of clear water, high light penetration and turbulent current that characterises the habitat. Deforestation, agricultural run-off and any upstream disturbance that loads the water with silt or warms it are thus immediate threats to populations.

Feeding

Hypergastromyzon sambas is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its flattened, fleshy mouth, it rasps diatoms, microalgae and organic detritus from rock surfaces — the classic feeding mode of rheophilic hillstream loaches. In nature this diet is delivered continuously by the current, which delivers fresh nutrients and keeps the rock surfaces perpetually colonised.

In the aquarium, failing to provide this diet is the single most common cause of death in hillstream loaches. A bare, newly-set-up or over-cleaned tank has no biofilm for the fish to graze, and it will starve even if other fish are thriving on flake or pellet food. The tank must be mature — meaning several months old with established algae and biofilm growth on rocks and glass — before hillstream loaches are added. Supplementary feeding with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), algae wafers and sinking discs, and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia or bloodworm, helps sustain a group when natural biofilm is insufficient. Strong lighting over a mature, algae-covered rock-scape is the keeper's target.

Mating

No published account of the breeding behaviour of Hypergastromyzon sambas exists. In the wider genus Hypergastromyzon and among hillstream loaches generally, very little is known about specific mating rituals under natural conditions. The typical hillstream spawning pattern inferred across the family involves males pursuing females in shallow, fast-flowing water over clean gravel and stone, with courtship being brief and based on proximity and current-following rather than any elaborate display.

Sexing hillstream loaches is difficult. Mature females are typically broader-bodied when gravid, and in some closely related genera the male develops small tubercles (nuptial papillae or rough skin patches) on the snout and pectoral fin rays during breeding condition. Whether these secondary features appear in H. sambas is not documented. Given the species' recent description and near-absence from the hobby, any attempt to reliably sex the fish in an aquarium setting must be regarded as provisional.

Breeding

Hypergastromyzon sambas has not been bred in home aquaria, as far as is known. The species is a recent description from 2021 and has essentially no presence in the hobby. Even in the wider genus and the hillstream loach family, captive spawnings are uncommon: a few genera, notably Sewellia, have been reported to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks, depositing eggs among stones and gravel with no parental care, and some Gastromyzon and related genera have been spawned in specialist hillstream tanks. Most hillstream loach genera, however, are not bred in home aquaria.

As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, H. sambas would, if it spawned, deposit eggs among rocks and gravel in fast current, leaving them to hatch and the larvae to fend for themselves in the interstitial spaces between stones. A keeper wishing to attempt spawning would need a long-established, strongly-flowing, cool, well-oxygenated river tank with a deep gravel and cobble bed. The honest expectation for this species is that it is rarely or never bred in captivity, and no farm or commercial supply exists; any fish in the trade will be wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Hypergastromyzon sambas is a specialist fish for the committed hillstream keeper, not a beginner's purchase. The conditions it requires are the inverse of a standard tropical community tank: cool water with strong, turbulent flow and high dissolved oxygen, a mature rockscape thick with biofilm and algae, and pristine water quality. A powerhead or wavemaker directed along the length of the tank, supplemented by a strong external filter, is the minimum to approximate the Bornean torrent streams the species inhabits. Water temperature should be kept in the cooler hillstream range — well below the 79–82 °F of a typical tropical community — and the aquarium must never be allowed to run warm or stagnant.

The tank should be mature before any hillstream loach is introduced. Several months of running with strong light, rock and gravel, and no heavy cleaning will allow biofilm and algae to establish on all surfaces; this living layer is the primary food supply. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables and occasional frozen invertebrates. Like other hillstream loaches, H. sambas is sensitive to poor water quality and to low oxygen, and near-scaleless skin makes it vulnerable to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — use half-doses cautiously and only when essential. The fish is small and peaceful toward tank-mates, but its exacting water requirements make it unsuitable for a mixed community tank; a dedicated hillstream biotope with similar-sized, cool-water rheophiles is the appropriate setting.

Conservation

Hypergastromyzon sambas has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2021 from a restricted locality in the Sambas district of West Kalimantan, it may have a limited natural range, and small-range Bornean stream endemics are in general a group of conservation concern. The primary threats to hill-stream fish communities in Kalimantan are deforestation and the associated siltation and warming of previously clear, cool streams, agricultural run-off, small-scale gold mining (which introduces mercury and disrupts stream beds), and water abstraction.

Because the species is a 2021 description and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade, the aquarium industry exerts no documented pressure on it at this time. Any future collection for the hobby should be monitored given its apparently restricted distribution. More field survey work and a formal IUCN assessment are needed before the status of this species can be characterised with confidence.
