Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus pfeifferae was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1853, one of the hundreds of freshwater fish species he named from the Netherlands East Indies. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — with roughly 790 described species the largest family of loaches by far, and one that has been extensively reshuffled over the past few decades as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. Many species once placed in Nemacheilus have since been moved to Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other segregate genera as the family's taxonomy was revised; N. pfeifferae has remained in Nemacheilus, and that combination is retained here.
The species epithet honours Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797–1858), the Austrian traveller and travel writer whose voyages through the Dutch East Indies brought back natural history specimens, including fishes, for description by contemporaries such as Bleeker. The Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; GBIF and FishBase both list Nemacheilus pfeifferae (Bleeker, 1853) as a currently accepted species in Nemacheilidae.
Morphology
Nemacheilus pfeifferae is a small, elongate loach, reported to reach only about 2.5 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family built almost entirely from slim, sub-4 in fishes. As in other Nemacheilidae, the body is cylindrical and streamlined, with the barbels, small subterminal mouth and reduced or embedded scaling typical of a fish that spends its life in contact with the streambed, and it likely carries the small, erectile suborbital spine found through much of Cobitoidea. This is a common outcome for narrow-range Sumatran stream endemics in this family, many of which are known from very few localities and have not been the subject of dedicated population surveys.
As an island endemic restricted to Sumatra, the species would in principle be exposed to the same pressures facing much of Sumatra's freshwater fauna — deforestation, agricultural conversion and stream alteration — but no source reviewed here documents an actual population trend or specific threat to this species.
